TIIE NEII-YORK MEDICAL ACADEMY.
/14IIE happy effects ol the lUilnnital System of
!L Practice, mote especially ol Idle employed in
the cure of disease, are such as entitle it to a (ugh rank
among modern improvements. The opinion long en
tertained in its favour, by many ot tue judicious, a
thoroughexperieuce has now demonstrated to be well
founded: and with the number aud variety of its salu
tary achievements, its reputation is daily increasing.
U must be evideut to every discerning mind, that
the present prevailing practice, which rejects this bo-
tanicuiaid, is at variance with our nature and with
our happiness. Mercury, the Lancet, and the Knife,
are chiefly relied upon, by physicians and surgeons of
tlarpresent day, for the removal of almost all the dis
eases incident to the human body, notwithstanding the
ellccts ot these deleterious agents are evidently fatal
In multitudes. Deeply impressed with these tacts and
with a view of reforming the science and practice of
medicine, an individual ot this city in the year 1827,
procured a lot of ground and erected a hundsome and
convenient edilice, fur an Institution denominated the
United States Infirmary, expressly for employing a re-
tnrmed system of practice in the treatment ot disease;
the remedial resources being chiefly derived from the
productions of our own country. The course of treat
ment adopted by thislnstitution was principally the re
sult of near forty years experience of a distinguished
medical reformer, which course we are happy to state
has been crowned with signal success, and proved to
a demonstration, that without mercury, that boasted
champion ol'lhe MATERIA MEDICA, or other poi
sonous drugs, diseases generally may be cured by
those more safe and.snlutnry means, which the God of
natuir has so liberally scattered around us.
Animated by the past success, mid with the hope of
benefiting future generations, an irrepressible desire
has been felt, that measures commensurate with the
Importance of the object should be taken, to promul
gate this valuable system of practice, aud thereby im
prove and reform the noble and important science of
medicine. -
After reflecting for yearsupon the most prudent and
successful method of effecting so desirable an object,
it has been deemed expedientto establish a MEDICAL
SCHOOL, with competent teachers, where students
may receive board and instruction until they are ful
ly qualified to practise in the various branches of the
healing art upon the reformed System. We are now
happy to announce, thata building for such an institu
tion has been erected, and (bv Divine permission) will
be opened in Nov. next, for the deception of Stu
dents.
The building it large and commodious, situated in
Eldridge-Street, between Grand and Broom, and ad
joining the present U. S. Infirmary. It is in a healthy
and pleasant part of the city, and has been comple
ted at a great expense.
The following branches will be (aught —
1. Anatomy.
2. Surgery.
S. Theory and Practice of Physic.
4. Midwifery, and Diseases of Women and
Children.
5. Materia Medica and Practical Botany.
6. Chemistry and Pharmacy.
The benefit! to be derived by an attendance at this
Institution, 'will, we trust, be duly appreciated by
