Armies and banners are buried in thee!
\V hat are the riches ot Mexico's zoins9,
1 o the wealth that far down in thy deep watev
shines?
The proud navies that cover the conquering west—
lhou fiing'st them to death with oic heave on tb*
breast. *
From tho high hills that view thy wreck-making
• shore, *
When the bride oT the mariner shrieks at thy rear.
When like Iambs in the tempest or mew* in the blast.
On thy ridge-broken billows tbe canvas is cast—
How humbling to one with a heart and a soul,
To look on thy gisatiess and list to Its roll!
To think how that heart in cold ashes ahull be.
While tbe voice of eternity rises from thee!
Yes! where ara the cities of Thebes and of Tyre?
Swept from the nations like sparks frem the fire!
The glory of Athens, the splendor of Rome,
Dissolved—and forever—like dew in thy foam.
But thou art ulmighty, eternal—sublime—
Unwearied—unwanted—twin-brother of 1'imo!
Fleets, tempests nor nations thy glory can bow;
As tho stars first beheld thee, still cbainless art thou*
But bold, when thy surges nor longer shall roll.
And that firmament’s length is drawn back like *
scroll;
Then—then shall the spirit that sighs by thee now.
Be more mighty, more lasting, more chainless than
thou.

The Wstius Equi or Bolt-Fly.—Its } af .
va inhabit the stomach nnd intestines of horses,
and are well known in thoir effects by the nnrao
of bolts. The manner of their introduction ex
hibits one of the singular and well adapted pro
visions of nature. Tho lemalo deposits hor
eggs on the hairs of the horse during autumn,
choosing for tho most part whore ho can lick
them off with his tongue, and thus introduce
them into the stomach, where tho warmth
quickly hatches them. They then commonco
depredations by gnawing the internal coating of
tho atnmnch and the neighboring parts, to
which they attach themselves by little hooka.
They continue to increase in size until spring
when their gnawing if nunierods, occasions
great agony to the noble animal, and unless
effectual remedies be administered soon causes
his death.

dia, I found the native lawyers very cunning
fellows, and that I had no chance with them;
they puzzled mo two or three times a day.—
This was no trifle to a bilious temperament in •
hut climate. At length I hit upon n plan for
preventing it.—Whenever I found one of these
lawyers attempting to puzzle the court, I im
mediately ordered him down and had him bas

a week they wero nil thoroughly cured, and I
decided my cases veiy comfortably during my
whole judicial residence in India, besides avoid

effect, till the apposite lawyer asked what made
him cry! “He pinched me,” answered the lit

with laughter.
American Gratitude During the admiuis
(ration of sir Robert Walpole, the transporta
tion of convicts to this country proved a very
great grievance. Dr. Franklin wrote to tho
Minister the thanks of the colonies for the ma

this instance! end as a satisfactory proof of A-
merican gratitude, sent him a collection of rat
tlesnakes, which he advised hint to have intro

suring him that they would be as baneficial to
his majeity'i Emriish dominions, as the British
convicts were to America.
Swift's last lines.—In one of those laeid in
tervals which varied the course of Swift's oo-
happy lunacy, his guardians took hint out to give
him an airing. When they came to thePha*-
nix park, Swift remarked a new building which
he had never seen and asked wbat it was de
signed fori Dr. Kingsbury answered, 'that,
Mr. Dean, is tho magazine for arms and pow

the dean, pulling out his pocket book, 'let mu
take on item of that. This is worth remarking
my tables as Hamlet *»y», my tables—•metaory,

ing line* being the last he ever wrote:—.
Behold a proof of Irish sense!
Here Irish wit is seen!
When nothing's left for our defence
We build a magazine.
The Doan then put up his pocket book,
laughing heartily at the conceit, and etenebin;’
it with, ‘after tho steed is stolen, shut the stable
door.'
