GENIUS—a Fragment.
Mourn not that Geniugt does not shed
Her dazzling halo round thy.head,
Or Fancy, genius’ darling child,
Bcr richly (ruled flow rets uitd
Flings o'er thy level mind.
'Tis true the high and brilliant blaze
That round his ardent forehead plays
Attracts, awhile, the homage gaze
Of souls to humbler bounds eeufmed.
And fancy lends him wings to tljy
Where morning lights the Rushing sky,
Or chase the rainbow's fleeting hue,
Or n utli the trembling gems of dew,
That evenmg’s airy eyelid weeps;
Yet many a pang of power severe.
To force the bitter, bursting tear,
Or chill the pulse's young career.
Its stint:, for wayward genius keeps.
MISCELLANEOUS.
BACHELORS.
Tho inquisitive fair one asks what is it that dc-
torsilu bachelor front matrimony? Fair ct a re,
have you ever bad suute half dozen beaux fi„ ling
around ymi, and i knuw lull well you have, and
are you nut perfectly aware of the many little
ntiinccuvres which vanity suggested to your
niinu to captivate them all, and how quickly your
actions follow your inclination? and do you
really supposethatmanisasblihd asrthe Ittri*
urchin who wings random abatis, and cannot
understand tho windings and shifrings of your
coquetry? If you were but willing to select
one from the band and make him happy*, tho
rest would besatisfied. But they cannot endura
alone time to be the first, and ut another u
sco a companion preferred. Tho truth is that
coquettes grasp at tuo much and thus lose the
whole. The same .glance of the half averted
eye, the same smile at every wtrd,'at.d the s -mo
graceful attendance is paid to each while togeth
er, and the same look of love and soft sigh, and
the same attack on the weaknass of his heart by
the concentrated power of her charms, is direct
ed against each as time or circumstance place
them individually within her reach. And when
she has caught someone in tbesnaie so wily pre-'
pared, she loves, dearly loves, to show he'r'pow- •
or over him, until tired of tho amusement, site
casts him off with e inugh or a scorn, leaving him
to break the chain wherewith, he was enthralled,
as he can, and whispers in her friend’s anxious
ear that she has had another ‘offer.’ Thank
heaven, however, all females are not coquettes,
and we must therefore look for othrr causes that
influence men in matters of the heart. It has
become fitshionble for a Jady, loves she never so
truly, or beats her bosom never so fondly at tho
name of lover, to conceal closply the state of bur
affections, nor by word or action let him kne w
that he is valued higher titan others, although she
knows that she is the light of his life, and tVit
tho smallest token of her affection would be
to him inestimable. The ladies say female del
icacy forbids it Dors female delicacy forbid
bcr from harboring the passion iu her own heart,
and will female delicacy console he r for the loss
of her huppiuess and the destruction of a lover’s
hopes?
I would not think b lady should tender her
love to any man; but when one comes io tho
guise of truth, and by his conduct or his word;
endeavors to engage her affection, oh let not the
cold formalities of ilio world wither the young
and tender bud. but the genial influence of re
quited love cull forth in-all the beauty of vcroul
loveliness the full blown flower. Man cares not
to cast away his lovo, for, however humble or
despised by the fair one it tuny be, it is still his
love, it is all of his luvt*. He will not piaco
such n gem at tho disposal of cold and reserv
ed beauty for her to accept or reject, as ha
would selpct or throw by a dress for a ball.
When a mnn does love, it is deeply, devoted
ly, there is bm one thought in his miud, ono
word on his lip, one image in his Itenrt. And
when it is rejected, then is left for. him either a
miserable existence or death by dissipation. Ho
asks tor and will receive only the pure ..ffrctioa
of gettilo woman, and nothing less, will suffice.
He wants
‘•—Not the cold romance’s ecstacy,
The flame new-lit to every passing eye:
But the high impulse that the stately sonl
Feels slow engross, it but engross it whole.”
If then, fair reader, you ever again in the in
nocence of your heart, feel disposed to derido
the bachelor’s lonely fate, reflect for a.moment
on the causes which have produced it, and as
your beauteous eye ghtuces over the crowd of
admirers who throflg-sround you, look kindly
ouund select from among them, one who is mod

SUBSTITUTE FOE A LOST LIMB.
The artificial con'rivances for replacing the
lower extremity of the human body, alter, t.
successful amputation of (he thigh, was produc
ed by the inventor and manufacturer, Mr. J.
F. Thomas hi New York. After bavin;:
found it necessary to undergo an operation
above the knee, and been fortunate in a com
plete recovery, in other respects, Mr. Thoma.-
turned his attention, townid the forming of
some factitious aid preferable to the crutch oV
the stick. Under the pressure of bis particu
lar circumstances, and the exertion of a bappv
genius, lie has succeeded to admiration, in pro
viding a succedaneum for pertpns who bavo
sustained a severe loss.
When he made tho experiment of wnlkinp
with his artificial limb, it wus observed, that
he did not limp or hobble so much tfs many in
dividuals who are disordered with rheumatism
ltd gout. Tho examiners, on receiving a les-
sou of instruction on this fulicilious piece of
work, were convinced, that a man who hat
lost his thigh hy high as the middle, might be
xceedmgly relieved by the present exquisite
mechanism; inasmuch, as it possesses, tCBoog
Iters, tho following properties: viz.
1. A shape, exactly liko the remaining limb.
