The darkness around you dispelling; •
Though death-fires enshroud you, and waste is begun,

Points to every loved altar and dwelling,
And demands from the sons of the noble in fame
If the bell mark ot slave must still blacken tbeir name!
By tbe glory our tyrants would quench but ia vain—
By the shades of our heroes departed—

The President of the U. S.
Sin—I had the honorto receive by way of Doy*
lestown, your lettcrof the 23d instant, with its en- .
closures, viz: copies of a circular letter from you ;
to the acting Secretary of YVar, Treasurer of tbe U-
ntted States, Register and Second Auditor of the i
Treasury, and of their respective answers—the co
py of your circular being in print; the others 1 hid 1
afso seen in the newspapers some days beforo youf
letterfreacbed me. .
In your letter to the above referred to, you speak
of my having charged several officers of the gov*
eminent with a conspiracy, and state that they
have denied the charges preferred against them by
me. I must bo permitted to say that I have not
charged those officers with auy specific offence in
the form suggested by you. ,
I have stated that the late Secretary of War god
acting Secretary of YVar, were lying in wait for tho
purpose of making an assault upon me, on my way '
to the office, as I believed with an intent to assas
sinate. I also staled that a grocery store between,
my lodgings and the office, and the rooms of tha
Treasurer and Register were alternately occupied
by them as places of rendezvous while so employ
ed. 1 farther staled that the Treasurer, Register
and Second Auditor were in their company. I al
so stated that the principl persons thus engaged,
viz: Eaton and Randolph, with a recruited force,
threatening an assault upon the dwelling I resided '
in, the same night until a late hour, and 1 now
state that this threatening was continued until alatO
hour on the following night. The oflicera who
have denied the charges as framed by you, admit
having been in company with Mr. Eaton during;
the time referred to, but they deny having been jo
bis company the whole time; this was nevet intend
ed to have been allege'! by me.
The admissions, equivocations and palpable te-
sei vations in their letters, are abundant proof of, too -
material facta asstrted by me, So far as they ar»
concerned; but if any doubt remains, it should b*
observed, that nty letter of the 21st was addressed
to you especially as Chief Magistrate of the Dis
trict ot Columbia, in which capacity yoOr power*
must be ample to direct the proper officer of tho
Government (n izstitute a legal investigation of this
transaction before a tribunal, having power to ex
amine.and compel the attendance of witnesses.
YY henever thii shall be donr. I will, without delay,
return to the seat of government, and render all the
aid in tny power to such officer in the disebargeof
his duty. It must, however, be distinctly under
stood. that the investigation shill begin with prin
cipals. and before 1 furnish a list of the Witnesses,
that an assurance of protection shall ho given to
those who hultl offices that lhey shall suffer no ln-
