Friday Night, 17th June 1831.
. Sir—I have studied to disregard the abu
sive slanders which have arisen through so-de
based a source as the U. S. Telegraph, I
have been conient to wait for tho full develope-
ment of what lie had to say, and until persons
ofrcponsible character should be brought icsrtta
to endorse bis vito abuse of me, and of my fam
ily. In that paper of this evening is contained
the following remark of my wife*. “It is proven
that the families of the Secretaries of life Trea
sury and of the Navy, aud of the Attcrney Ge
neral, refused to associate with Iter." This pub
lication appears in a paper which profesos to
be friendly to you, and is brought for.tli uqdcr
your immediate oyo. 1 desiro to know of yoil,
whether or not you sanction this statement, or
disavow it. The relation wo have sustained
towards each other, authorizes me to demand an
immediate answer. Very respectfully,
J. H. EATON.

Washington 18/A June, 1881. .
Sir—I received today your note of lgSt
i night, in which you call my attention to an ar
ticle in the U. S. Telegraph of tho 17th to-
slant, relating to your wife—and desiring, to
know whether I will sanction or disavow that
statement: you add, "tho relation we Itavo sus
tained towards each other, authorizes me Q>
demand an immediate answer.”
To this inquiry preferred as n matter of
right, and presented in the form ot a demand,
nty answer must be brief. It consists in the ■
simple denial of tho claim which you assert.
I cannot recognize your right to interrogate
me concerning the statements of tlio Tele
graph, or of any other public journal, which are
made without my agency. You might with
equal propriety select an article from any
newspaper in the -Union, for the purpose of
putting me to the question-—and if the claim
which you assert bo well founded, I might be
required at tho instanco of any person aggriev
ed, to give my confession of faith, in rcluYuin
to the various statements to I10 found in any of
tho journals, in which my namo may chance to
bo mentioned. Such h- demand, therefolo,
cannot be admitted for 0 moment. But al
though I cannot recognize your right, either as
derived front tho relation which wo have sus
tained towards each other, or from any other
source, to make llie demand presented by your
mite, I am not quite sure, looking to tho posi
tion in v hicli we stani before tho public, that I
can acquit myself to tbe community qr tp my
self for declining lo answer your inquiry.' . .
In tho progress of those events which lju\;u
at length rciulted in the dissolution of the Cabi
net, my determination has not been to do any
act which was calculated to provoke controver
sy, nor to deviate under wlmtovcr urgency from
that line of conduct, which my own sense of
propriety prescribed. Acting upon this deter
mination, 1 have necessarily pursued a course^,
which ,n refusal to answer yeur inquiry, might
seem to indicate nn unwillingness to avow
Such an inference would bo unjust as it re
gards myself, and delusive in relation to the
public. Although thorefuro 1 .havo tho must,
unaffected reluctance to enter upon such a sub
ject, and certainly do not acquiesce in your "
right to demand it, it seems to nte that you have
by making the inquiry, imposed upon metl,p.
obligation to do 30, from a just consideration of
what I owo to myself and to tho public. I
have then to state to you, that up to tho timo of
your mnrriago, 1 had not Itcatd tho rumors,
which have'since in various forms, beenpresent-

cd to the public, mid was ignorant of Mrs.. Eat
on's relation to tlio society of this ptaco. 1 uc-
ceptedyour invitation to bo present ai your wed
ding, therefore, with no distrust of the proprie
ty of my doing so, other than that which result
ed from my own situation at that period. .You
are yourself no doubt awa to hotv much that p-
vent, and your subsequent introduction into the
Cabinet, made these rumors tho subject of con
versation. I could not longer comimic in ig
norance ef that which was publicly and gener
ally spoken of, and it consequently became ne
cessary for me, embarassed as the question wa»,
by tlio official relation in which we stood to
each other, to determine'upon my.future con
duct. In doing this, it did not seem to roo to
be necessary, to decide upon the-truth or false
hood of the statements which wore made. It
was sufficient to ascertain the general sense of
tho community of which. I had recently bo*
como n member; and having done so, to con
form to it. In the winter of 1830, as I pro-
sumo is known to you, I was called upon by a
gentleman, who represented himself ns acting,
and who I doubt nut did act, under tho author
ity of the President, to express with precise
reference to this'subject, tbe regret which ho
felt at the want of harmonyv or of social inter
course among the members; of his Cabinet, aud
to; announce his determination atony rate to
have it. Messrs. Ingliarq and Branch were
present at this interview. The fact was dis
tinctly stated that they and myself had suc
cessively given very large parties, to which
Mrs. Eoaton had not been invited. We were
thon told that on such occasions at least, the
President would expect in future a social inter-
tcrcourso between our respective families.
There were vat ious other suggestions made du
ring this conversation, but the recapitulation of
them is not rendered necessary by your inqui
ry. I answered to this communication for .
myself, that I would not permit the President.
