GOVERNOR’S ELECTION.
After; travelling through twenty-three
counties, and conversing with and receiving
lettors from, intelligent citizens of many others,
wo thiok wo can form a tolerably accurate
opinion of tho approaching result of the pen
ding election. Our means of judging, at least,
are probably as ample as those of uny other
person. And wo urc much gratified to have it
in our power to sny, with these means, that
wo ontertain no doubt whatever of the success
of Air. Lumpkin, rind believe that nothing
within tho scope of ordinary events, can pos
sibly prevent it. Such, too, we know to bo
llio opinion of many of our political friends,
who havo taken much pains to inform them
selves; and, having met with none of them but
what is sanguino of success, we believe it to bo
tho opinion of oik This confidence will dts
much for tj|, but yet, if carried too far, it may
do injury; and, therefore, let no man permit it
to lull him into fihe neglect of any honorablo
means of cusuring it in tho eolightoning of the
people, on ihoso great points of difference
between the candidates, in which their best in
terests aro deeply involved.
Among the subjects of interest involved
in tbe present election, are, Mr. Gilmer’s for
mer election by tho Clark party, on the ground
that he would do them justice, us a portion of
the peoplo, in his distribution oi the Govern
ment offices and patronage—his public pledge,
in conformity with tlicir expectations, and
which was hailed by them in proof oftho cor
rectness of their estimate of ins character, that
ho would bo tlio Governor of thoj State and
not ofn party—his violation of that sacred
pledge, and proscription of, and wanton ingrat
itude to, his best friends—tho exceedingly
contradictory, inconsistent, and imbecile char
acter of Iris mJministration—the weakness and
folly of his recommendations, and their aristo
cratic tendency, and the injurious nature of his
acts—his demand for the President of tho
U. States, to remove from tho Clrerokeo
territory the U. S. troops, which wore protec
ting the gold mines and tho peaco and good
order of the territory, free of expense to us,
and more reputably and effectually than it has
ever been dune since; and recommending, in
their steiid, and in violation of the Consti
tution of tho U. S. (which prohibits the estab
lishment ofr standing army, by any of tho
States) an armed Guard, to the increase of his
own power and patronage, which (die opinioa
of His Excellency and his friends to the con
trary notwithstanding,) it is ridiculous ta con
sider in any other light than as a military force,
acting ns they aro under all' tho formula of
soldiers;' and this, at an enormous annual ex
pense to tho Stato, which, but for tho unneces
sary removal of tho U. S. troops, at tho de
mand of Iiis Eocellency, would have keen
saved to tho State—his assertion,, in his mes
sage, of the right of the Sluto to prpcecd K>
tho most thoroughgoing measures against.the:
Indians, and subsequent alarm, opposition to,
and defeat of, the bill to; that eflbcr, when he
found that if it-had passed (the responsibility
being properly thrown upon himself,) it would
inovitably have effected his political destruc
tion, whatever course he migti have taken;
and his threat to veto'tho bill in tho very face
of his assertion of tho right, if it slfculd pass
in its original,form-—his assertion ot tho excel
lent principle, that surplus money should be
kept in the hands oftho people, rather, than
placed imho treasury, and that it wili be used
more virtuously, beneficially, aud advantag
eously ta themsolvcs and the State, and less
corruptly, by the people, than by those who
may have (he control of n foil treasury, and,
it: contradiction of this, irt tho same message,
and almost in the very same breath, his recom
mendation of Reserves of the whole gold mines,
and insulliog nnrf'liVfclfdus charge upon Ihe
character of tho people of .tho State (particul
arly the poorer portion of them,) tlwt the
acquisition of wealth, mid thu prospect of if,
in drawing, or expecting to draw, a gold mine,
in the land lottery, would oncourago, an inju-
rious spirit of speculation, corrupt their morale,
and urge them to fraud and idleness, and pro
digality, as “the irsuul result of riches easily
acquired", as tho’ a poor rnAn, who bud learned
the 1 (rue value of money by. tho beat of all
possible modes, hard lubor, would not know
quite as well how to tako caroofit, as a rich man,
even His Excollcncy, Inmself, who we believo
is a rich rnnn—or ax lho*o rich nten gocerally,
who after its being placed in the Central Bank,
as a necessary consequence of the adoption of
the recommendation, can alone get it from
lltore, under the supervisory control of His
Excellency and the officers of the Bank, who.
aro all appointed by him, and we presume all
agroo with him; and who will therefore, undor
hu influence, kindly take care that no poor
man-gels any money from there, lest it should)
corrupt his morals, and muko him idle, fraud
ulent, and prodigal!
His determined pqraoyerahcc in pressing hi*
aristocratic project of Reserving the Gold-minis
even after the 'decided unpopularity of it wn»
plainly manifest, by specially rocommcudiag to
the Legislature to provide, by . law, for the
renting out of tlio mines, by w hich mean*, if
adopted, the product of the mines, tore' the
rent of them, would still have been drawn iuty>
tbe Central Bank, os effectually ns if the Gov
ernment hnd reserved them, and worked them,
itself, according to the provision; of his first
recommendation.—This second < ffort at get
ting tho wealth of (ho mines into the Cent
ral Bank, instead of permitting it to pass into
the hands of the people, to w bom it of right
belongs, evinces a,more than ordinary devo
tion to tbe object, and a determination to spars
oo effort to effect it. And, why should 1(1*
Excellency thus presevere in a project to take
from the people so immense * portion of their
wealth as that of the gold minus, und place it
in the Central, llank, after the peoplo them
selves, and their representatives in the Legisla
ture, bad manifested so decided au.opposition to
it—not only by excluding the projodt from
the Land Bill, but by repealing lb» former law
w hich reserved (u the State tho mines aud
minerals of the former purchase,-even after
tho land had been allotted to the people, and
those mines and minerals had Ih.ri mertod to
