Fi-bl JOHN REDDING, deputy sheriff. 1’OSTP*‘NED BALE, f Alia, will be snl'l as above, 202 1-2 acres of L'lnd, (number tint known) per*’ tho captain and mate, nud eight seamen. Tho officers had however lost nil authority—the captain having bocome odious by. his pctulauce, tyranny and waut of discretion—and tho mate haring co other pretensions to respect than Ins ability to throw tho log, take an observation, and work the reckoning. They were both at tho onr, and owed their livea to the prompt exertions of a passenger to whom tho seamen yielded the obc- dicnco of children, nud who was externally dis tinguished only by the jaundiced hue of his skin left jiy recent yellow fever, his buli-ucck, bushy head, iron visage aud oye of fire. Carpentcro exert ed his iulluence also in rendering comfortable the situation of two Philadelphians, far gone iu nil hepatic aOection, who had left La Vera Cruz with the fond hope of brcnthiitg their last iu their na tive city—in which respect he was ably seconded by bis travelling companion, Hilson, a young Englishman of a wild and daring character, but blest with a kind heart aud high sense of honor. The attention of tho party was suddeuly at tracted by the distant report of a gun. By tho help of n glass, was discernible, near the head of tbc bay, a long low schooner, with lofty poles, hcrsails furled, nnd her iron-teclhpeering through her black-looking sides. The sailors, nil of whom had long been acquainted with tho Carribean Sea and tlio Gulf of .Mexico, pronounced hor, without hesitation, the piratical schooner Hornet, chiefly owned in Savannah, and commanded by the ferocious Beattie; and their contracted coun tenances boro anipio witness to the sincerity of their dcclaralicu. Recollecting however that tho wind and current from tho sea rendered her beat ing out impracticable and ihnt no other sound between them aud Tampico "had water enough for her entrance, they quickly recovered their spirits, but their equanimity was of short duration. Auother flash was soon seen to dart from die side of tlio pirate, succeeded hy a grumbling report; nud alter a few minutes, a boat full of men put ofT, and immediately gave chase. Tho situation of the party in the longboat wns iiifficicntly alarming. They had saved arms aud ammunition from their wreck. The captain, though a professed duelist, Cnrpenlero had ob served, was without courage, tlio mate was a timorous drone, aud the seamen, wire had mostly at one time or another been in the power of the cutthroats, scented parallyxcd nt the thought of falling into their bauds again. Should resistance become necessary, lie could with certainty rely only on Ililson, and the two Philadelphians, who, though' feeble in body, were firm in mhid, and excellent marksmen. Success, iu the case, seem ed impossible, yet was be determined to resist, considering death with arms in hi* hands prefer able to tamely suffering his throat to be cut or tossed into tire sea blind-folded, the prey of the barracoota, the shark nud cayman. He was however disposed to try first what could bo achieved by flight. “Take tho tiller,” said he to ona of tbo Philadelphians—to the other, •* ex amine tlio locks nnd flints of tlio muskets”—to the crew, “our whole force to the oars, my hearties,'" setting the example himself. Never did men oxeft tlienisclvea more willingly. The water foamed nbotrt the how and boiled on their oar-blades. But it was the gull fleeing from tbc eagle. Tire sharp clinker-built boat of the pi rates was gainiug on them so rapidly, that though, at first, more than four miles off, site was within n mile a half in less than an hour. Flight was evidently hopeless, nnd the men were exhausted. “Let us lie on our oars where wc are,” they cried, “and fight them when they come up."—" Yes,” said Ililson—“fight while we can, and, when they board, sot fire to tire keg of powder.”— “Fight to be *ure," answered Carpentcro; "but with the best advantage our circumstances admit. —Run into that clump of mangrove on the star board,”— poiutiug to n tUicket of those bushes, ou a salt key about three hundred yards to tire oast, running down into the water. "Tire malted leaves and thick shade may be of service. Pull briskly. Lay her fore nnd aft with the shore," he continued, as she buried herself about thrice her length among tho arched branches; nnd with alacrity the order was obeyed.—"Remember, (he added,) fo desert the boat is death. Without food or fresh water, Wo must perish of famine ami - vci a* well radcs fired, not; as concerted, iu succession, but simultaneously. Tho oars dropped, and half the pirntes disappeared. Confounded by the sudden ness as well as the fatality of the attack, the fc- mijnder, scarcely knowing what they did, seized their arms; poured into the jungle a random vol ley, nnd, panic struck, threw tliemSclvos flat on tho bottom of the boat. The party uudor cover were untouched, aud had {into tb load. Aa aure as a pirate raised his eyes above tho gunwale, so certain was a hall sent iuto his head by tlio Phi ladelphians, for whom, by Carpcutcro’s orders, the seamen now loaded. Five fell iu this manner; and, as no more show ed themselves, it was concluded that all were kill ed, or that tho survivors were only waiting a chance to sell their lives as dearly as they could. Tire day too was advancing, tho boat scarcely drifting towards tho shore, nud it w as ilot deemed advisable to bivouac so near the Hornet. Four seamen, with their muskets, having ntouulcd the arch of mangrove overhead so as to command the boat, lire residue of the party issued frdrfi tire covort, in two files, with n space lietnc-eu for the rauge of tho seamen's builds. In thohoatlavl4 dead or dying, and 4 uuscathcd, who begged hard forlife. Carpcutcro’s opiuion was dentauded, uu- der a firm couviction that ho would order imme diate execution. Ho represented the impolicy of taking them to Tampico. It was notorious that a good understanding existed between the pirates on that coast and Iturbide’s officers of the rard. All these grfiat bonefat tor* were remark a 4 hie for the tolerance of their religious creeds.—a £ Boston Post! customs. This would eusuro them a favorable hearing before the Mexican authorities—might o- ven enable them to become accusers, and swenr away his aud his comrade’s lives, for which the few boxes of silver saved from the wreck, would bo an inducement and apology. He was there; fore in favor not of putting them to death, or leaving them on the islnnd, which would be worse, but of giving them the longboat with a couple of oars, and letting them, in the best way they could, fiud their way to tho Hornet, ns mercy to thorn could not exasperate their guilty companions, nor tbeir death reform them. Too much excitcmeut existed however for the administration of lenity ut that moment. To give quarter to those who granted nouo, was de clared unreasonable. Vengeance must take her course, and the mode was the only point of differ ence, hanging, drowniug uud shooting having their respective advocates, “I’ll cud the palaver*” said ouo of tho sailors, nn Englishman. "You I’ortugues 1> r,” addressing a small swarthy cutthroat, "don't you mind tlio time when l'ier- pont, you and me agreed, at Key West, to givo the Hornet lire slip, by stealing the gig end push ing for Nassaul' You bolrayttd us to Beattie.— Pierpout was made to walk tire plank; and I was reprieved from the yard-arm to he spliced to the holystone and pumping thunder, with iron-brnco- lets round my ankles fur six months. Tuko that, and tell Pierpout, I'vo revenges) him"—splitting his skull with tlio butt of his musket. The three others shared tho sauio fate, haviug their brains literally beaten out. Eightecu human beings, bleeding, mangled aud licnpcd on one auother is a horrid sight to sec. It is true they were of the worst character perhaps ou onrth, nnd tha't strict necessity inflicted on them on more titan what they intended in their wantonness to force on the unoffending—still death, the death of the most vicious, is a fearful thiug, revolting to our nature. The tenr--drop fell from the fierce eye of Carpen- tero, ns he surveyed the carnage, nud ordered the boat to he emptied nnd scrubbed—and as body af- tor body sank, reddening the wave and the last breath risiug in bubble* to the surface, he averted his stern face aud pressed his granite temples in agony. Bitt lie iiad no time to moralize. On his judgment depet/ded die safety uf his party, and that party must Ire distaut Irefore tho evening wiud of Aunhuac filled the sails of the Hornet. Tbc luggngo in half nu hour was transferred from the longboat to that of the pirates, the bottom of the longboat store in, and the party under weigh; who. favored hy fino weather nml the uni of u shoulder of mutton-sail, reached tho harbor of Tampico ou tire evening of the third day.
