Fir*'—Between 10 and 11 o'eloek last night n
fire suddenly burst from the large wooden Cotton
Warehouse of Mr. Joseph Ganalil. on the Bay.
corner of Abercorn street, which in a short time
enveloped every part of it. together with 110
bales of cotton stored within it. By the exertions
of thn Eire Company and citizens, however, the
ii'igllhoriug ware homes of Mr. Joseph t'mn-
tning were saved. The loss, as we learned last
night, is aho; t of which 827,000 is in
sured, principally in Augusta.
The building, it is said, was fired by nn incen

was still hurning when our paper went to press,
without any immediate danger however to pro

paper.
GEORGIA AND THE CHF.ROKI F.S.
The supreme court of the United States has de
cided that the law of Georgia, under which tlie
Missionaries were imprisoned, is unconstitutional;
and further, that the State of Georgia had no
right to extend her laws over the Cherokee ter
ritory.
Wo look upon this ns the most important
deeision ever rendered hy the Supreme Court
and i nvolving consequences which cannot now lie
calculated, whatever may lie the 'character of this
decision—whether in accordance with the spirit
of our Govermcnt or not—it is averse to the
cherished doctrine of State Rights, and leaves the
States iu a condition hut little better than that ot
colonialdepcndauce. Instead of aiding the ad
justment of conflicting claims, at which the police
of the Geucral Government has for years been
nimiug, it will serve to perpetuate that conflict, and
all the evils incident thereto. The time toe, nt
which tbisdei i-ioa is tendered, is peculiarly linfnr
tmiate. The people of the South, generally, are
in a st >te of excitement, growing out of evils
inflicted upon them by other sections of the U-
uiou.
Itis even imastei, since the deeision of the
Court, that the removal of Indians beyond
the limits of the States—an object which has
engaged the attention, not only of the present
bu? of preceding Administrations—Iris been de
fatted by the American Mission ry Society—that
it has successfully opposed, tli o ighiw Agents, a
measure oflheGeiier.il Government designed no
less to benefit the Indians, than to do justice to tin
long neglected claims of Geo 'gin.—Former’* J/u-
;eum.
Jledurtim The people seem now determined
to do Ibis work themselves. The rosnlntinns of
public meetings, the Grand Jury pres, turnouts,
the eleeti. ii of delegates, and other ili'hentis ex
pressions of public sintinunt fmm largo proj or"
lions of tlio surrounding counties, leave no rea-on
fora doubt, that in the strong Imigungefroquenily
used on these occasions, ••the people have taken
the business into their own hands."
But perfect unauimity can uoyer he expected,
aud there are of course some dissentients, who,
throwing their influence into thoopposite scale,
have t.ikeu a course that wt.tild tend to oppose and
thwart the present movement. It lias accordingly
been denounced as a party measure. Suppose tt
was. Are we so besotted with the spirit of con
tention,.that we will do no public service lest those
of another parly may join in doing it? Shall the
public never be served till it can he douc by one
party exelulively? it is however no party meas
ure, unless it shall ho industriously made so. All
parties, all sections nud interests havu been and
still are cordially invited to co-operate. ’
Thou it is proposed to put this matter off till the
questiouof our jurisdiction is determined. Now
we all khow that nothing more will be done against
us in ihat affair till uoxtyear; ami then, the i’ro-
sidental election, for which tlie contest was got
up being ever, will the northern zenlnts then urge
this enforcement of the decree of the Supreme
t; oll rt f Wo think uot. But if they do, the ques
tion c f jurisdiction is ulroaily settled, ns far hi the
concurring voice of several sovereign States cau
s -tile it. As to the people of this State, they are
perfectly united on that subject; und is not union
on one groat point auspicious to harmony on ano
ther? W hen persons who have been long, luto

fading: theu, it really seems to us, will he the
very time, of all others, to hope that they will
euter upon a matter of common intercet iu uu ttm

But it is further proposed to watt tu. the Cher
okee country is fully settled nud uudi-f our plough

FIRE IN WILLIAMSBURG.
OESrnceTio.v or rut: old cm t rot,!
A friend who tame .down in the steamboat last
night, politely hau led us the billowing letters, giv
ing :m account of Ilia destruction by fire on
Tuesday, of the Old Capitol in the city of Will
iamsburg,
Willitmshvrg, Fa> April 11,1832,
Messrs. Shields & Asimmi^,
D nr Sin—The old capitol, that ancient fo
rum of Virginia eloquence, is in ruins! Yesterday,
whilst the Superior court ivas sitting iu it and
die bar engaged in the discussion of a law ques
tion. ahont 11 o’cloik, the alarm of fire was giv-
n: a spot of several inches ouly was seen blazing
on the roof; it spread rapidly, nnd in a few min
utes defied resistance, with the limited means of
tbo c’ttv to furnish water. The Judge and bar,
ihe olfiCers of the court and citizens generally,
were now active in removing the records, all of
which, I am happy to say, were saved, though
not without some intermixture by bursting some
of ihe bundles. The fire Was, no doubt acciden
tal, emulating from a spark from tlie chimney.
When theory of lire was given, a hung jury w.is

sheriff, thoy burst the door and fled. Whether
tirs be a contempt of Court, or not, mj legal

“Yesterday about noon, was presented to the

i tidy very dry, it soon caught and kindled into a
gentle flame, which, by the influence of «light
iirecze from the Smith, wa# quickly fanned int'
a blaze. The material over which it spread be
ing of the mint inflammable kind, and uo ladders
being attach vi to the edifice or near the snot, the
fire rapidly "diffused over the surface of the roof,
and every human eil'ort to arest its progress was
soon rendered unavailing. The Superior court
being at tlie lime iu session, nnd the < Merit's nffi, e
located in tho building, a scene of tlie most ani
mated exertion, to save the records, as well as t.
extinguish thn fire immediately, ensued. Judgi
