ashington News. GTOM, Jan. 29, P. M-—Hon. George M. Dallas has accepted the Mission to England, in the place of Hon. James Bdchasan, resigned. Hon. Albert Rest, of Arkansas, as saulted Horace Greelt, this afternoon, in consequence of some offensive remarks published in a letter from Washington, in the Tribune. “ Old Horace ” was not seriously hurt. A caucus of Democratic Senator has nominated the publishers of the Wash ington Union, for Public Priuters for the 6enate. In the House, to day, the Hon. M. J. Crawford, of Georgia, gave notice that he would, on to-morrow, make a motion to proceed to the electiou of a Speaker, in one of iho ways prescribed by the Constitution of the Uuiied Slates for the election of President—that is, each State to have one vote. Mr. James A. Stewart, of Maryland, offered a resolution, which requires the concurrence of the Senate, that if the House did not organize by the sth of February, that both houses of Congress should adjourn until the 15th of May next. The resolution was laid on the table. The House had another unsuccessful ballot, and then adjourned. Commodore Morris died in this city yesterday. Shawlism. 15v request, we extract from the Jack sonville Hatchet, the following rebuke of the propensity of man to steal the livery of woman : “ I want to tell you what a woman thinks of the shawl-wearing rage just now possessing so many of our men. ‘• Talk of women weaving the breech es. The truth is, we will have nothing else to wear, from p.es nt appearance o .' The next innovation will be to don our petticoats and shifts Now young gentlemen — miutors of the Beecito - and oilier gieat fops—J >iT you feel ashamed iu your h us; blankets, or in the decanter old sit twls </' y >ur m ither..' A Billion. How ea»y it is to say a billion—how easy it is to write a billion—but can you count, a billion ? Why not? Stop a bit. Suppose you count 200 in ono minute. That is 12,000 in one hour. That is in one day, and 105,120,000 iu one year. Hut this would not, allow a single moment for sleep or for any other business whatever. To count a billion it would require 9,512 years, 34 dajs, 5 hours and 20 minutes, according to the above reckoning; but suppose wo were to allow the counter twelve hours daily for rest, eating and sleeping, it would then take 19,024 years, 68 days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes to count a billion. Something fob Barnum.—We were shown yesterday, living in domestic felicity, in a wire cage together, a me dium grown rattlesnake and a young cat. A gentleman from the North gave $lO to a negro for them, and intended taking them to the New York Museum. The negro lived in Chesterfield, and said that last winter, having for some time had the rattlesnake, he put a little kitten into the cage, to see the effect. . A fondness all of a sudden sprang up tit the feeling of the rattlesnake for the kitten, and thus they had since lived ■eciably and affectionately together. The eat seemed to take the part of a blanket, and spread itself over the snake to keep eff the cold, and thus tbey lived and loved together. —Petersburg Democrat. The Lancet, or some other equally edifying paper, on the subject of human food, says that large quantities of sau- Mges are made of horse flesh. A friend of ours says he believes it, as he invaria bly baa the nightmare when be has Mtea them for supper. National Pecuuarities. —When the American array moved through Mex ico one of its first institutions was the establishment of a newspaper office, which followed the camp and gave the intelligence of the day. Recent advices from the Crimea announce that the foundation had been laid for an army jockey club, with a permanent fund for races wherever the troops may be en camped. COTTON MARKET. They had a man in their press room who was afflicted with violent mercurial rheumatism, who was continually complaining of misery in the back, limbs and joints:—his eyes had become fe verish and mattery, neck swollen, throat sore, and all the symptoms of rheumatism, combined with .Scrofula. Two bottles of Carter's Spanish Mixture cured him, and, in an editorial notice as above, they bear testimony to its wonderful ef fects, and say tbeir only regret is, that all suffer ing with disease of the blood are not aware of the existence of such a medicine. They cheerfully recommend it. Fur sale at tbe Madison Book Store. J3T PRACTICE OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY.—Dr. F. H. Those who believe that money can do everything, are frequently prepared to do everything for money. The only good that a raiser does, is to prove the little happiness there is to be found in wealth. To be angry with a weak man is a proof that you are not very strong yourself. Solitude is the despair of fools, the torment of the wick- the joy of the good. It is like panJemonium, purgatory and paradise — according to the soul that enters it. Scandal is the reputation of the wicked. There are men who may be called “ mar tyre of good health;” not content with being well, they are always wishing to be better, until they doctor themselves into confirmed invalids, and die ultimate ly, you may say, of too much health. Mexdixg Brokex China. —The fol lowing old receipt for mending chins is said to answer admirably: “ Take a very thick solution of gum arabic in water, and stir into it plaster of Paris until the mixture becomes a viscuous paste. Ap ply it with a brush to the fractured edges, and stick them tog a her. In three days the article cannot again be broken in the same place. Tto whiteness of the cement renders it doubly valuable.” IF THIS IS LEAP YEAR PLEASE LEAP toward* the DRUG§TOIiE ami PAY UP. Those who have not the pturteO will be so kina as to leave their names. W. February l, ■ - VM «L- BEAUTIFUL ASSORTMENT OF ! 9ALB3STIMS! rtTFEBRUARY 14th, 185G.JSES r HAVE JUST RECEIVED from New York, L Baltimore, and Philadelphia, the most exten sire assortment of VALENTINES ever offered in this place, and everything connected with them, such as Writers, Verses, Envelopes, Lace Paper, &c., and am prepared to fill orders, Wholesale or Retail, at prices from five cents to twenty dollars. 1 have invoked Venus, the goddess of beauty and love, and her darling Cupid, and they have graciously chosen f-»r their retreats the M idison Rook Store, and have commissioned their friend, Benjamin* G. Liddon, as High Priest of Love, Courtship, and Matrimony. “ The world is full of poetry—the air Is living with its spirit; and the waves I)ance to the music of its melodies And sparkle in its brightness.” This spirit of poetry arouses our loftier train of affections, which are borne upon the gilded wings of Cupid’s messenger, in the form of a Valentine, to some fair friend breathing the pure sentiments of friendship, esteem, and all the Kindlier regards for those to whom we donate. It may, perchance, be received with silcut approval, told only by the fair face, " Where eloquent blushes burn and fade, Rich with the wealth of warm emotion ; Or starry dimples mock the shade, Like jewels in a restless ocean.” Valentines are the ambassadors of thought, where language fails. Tbey substitute, in glow* ing eloquence, the reading of the heart, by their symbolic meaning. Faithful to my trust, as a servant of tbe public, I am doing all in my power to further the inter eats of those youths and maidens who are raffer ing from an affection of the heart. To all, of ev ery age, and of every rank in life, I offer a spo ciuc tkat has never failed. Such is the wonder ful power of the Valentines sold by me, as a phi lanthropist and conservator of the tender pas sions, that none make love without sending one as a pioneer. BENJ. G. LIDDON.
