China.
Socialism has been thoroughly cau
vassed and even practised whilst Europe
was eating acorns. At Pekin is a Pha
■ lanstery called the “ Ilouse of Hens’
Feathers,” where the poor are lodged
for one-fifth of a farthing per night.
It is simply a vast hall thickly strewn
w ith feathers. Men, women, and chil
dren all lie down together in the beauty
-of communism; an immense coverlet is
then let down over the party, with holes
which the sleepers put their
.heads, so as not to be suffocated. At
day light the phalansterian canopy is
hoisted up, after a signal on the tain tain
| to invite hole holders to draw back their
! heads or swing. These bipeds in feath
i ersthen crawl around in the sea of dirty
' down till they find their wretched rags,
1 and then depart to make a fresh start in
life. Poligamy, though not really legal
■ in China, is yet only forbidden in books.
‘ A man may have as many wives as lie
| can support, but only one is recognised
as the legitimate mistress of the house
hold. The children born of the seconda
ry wives acknow ledge only the legitimate
one as their mother, wear mourning for
her instead of their real mother, and
■obey, respect, and cherish only her.
The lawful wife is protected by law, “ the
little wives” must fight their own bat
tles. As in all pagan countries, the
woman is the slave or victim of the mar.
The law, when it mentions her, does so
but to remind her that she is to be, to
do, and to suffer. All legislation is
wholly in favor of the husband.
Ail excavating apparatus, for taking
Oft' hanks and hills, has |ieen invented
by Charles Phillips, "of Detroit, Mich.
It consists of a huge table, with leaves,
which form a firm door, on to which the
dirt is brought by scrapers, Ac.., from
the sides and parts of the embarkment.
When a sufficient quantity has been ac
cumulated, the table tops or leaves are
tilt ed inwardly and the dirt falls upon
the carts below.—The leaves are then
pushed lip, and fastened level again, and
are ready for new loads.
Lynch Law- in Mississirm.—On the
Slid ult., at Bay of St. Louis, in Hancock
county, Mississippi, a negro man, owned
by Mr. Lumpkin, uunlcrud and horribly
mutilated his overseer, Mr. Samuel L.
AV atsuii, with an axe in the presence of
all the negroes in ti e field, lie then
4ed to tile woods. In twenty four hours
after the deed he was captured, carried
to the spot where the murder was com
mitted, and there hanged by tiie popu
lace.
The President has issued a proclama
tion, stating that associations in Kansas,
as well as in remote Slates, are organiz
ing with the design of interfering with
the domestic institutions of the Territory,
and declares that the whole power of the
General Government shall he exerted in
tlio support of the Territorial laws, and
suppression of revolutionary movements.
The London corresjioiidentoftho Man
chesterGuHrdiaii states that Mr. Macaulay
had received a check for SIO,OOO for the
copy l ight of the third and fourth volumes
of the History of England.
The New York Commercial Ad
vertiser notes an unintentional joke in
that very grave document, the United
States Treasurer’s Report, viz:
“ We find in the enumeration among
the articles w hich we do not import, but
manufacture for ourselves, 4 vices of all
mneript ions' ”
A man was once arrested by a farmer
for stealing ducks. The farmer said he
should know them anywhere, and went
on to describe the peculiarity. “ Why,”
said the counsel for the prisoner, “ they
can’t be such a rare breed—l have some
like them in my yard.”
r That’s very likely, sir,” said the far
mer ; “ they aro not the only ducks I
have had stolen lately.”
Rendering Tketii Insensible to
Pain. —The Dublin Hospital Gazette
states that diseased teeth have been ren
dered insensible to pain by a cement
composed of Canada Balsam and slacked
lime, which is to he injected in the hol
low of the tooth like a pill. It is stated
that such pills afford immediate relief in
all toothaches but chronic cases of inflam
mation. This remedy for toothaches is
simple, safe, and can easily be tried by
any^erson.

Ramsey, for many years proprietor of the Far

City Hotel, Kiehmond, Ya.
Dr. John Minge, of the city of Richmond,
though a regular physician, and of course opposed
to what he called quack medicines, was obliged
to say that its good effects in the case of Mr.
Ramsey were wonderful indeed.
He had been given up by several physicians;
had tried most of the quack medicines, and was
on the verge of despair, as well as the grave,
when lie tried Carter’s Spanish Mixture.
\\ r e refer the public to his full and lengthy cer
tificate around the bottle, stating his cure.
H3T Holloway’s Ointment and
Fills arc a certain cure for Scurvy.—Edward
Hope, of Charleston, S. Carolina, suffered more
than most people from the scurvy, and the whole
of his body was covered with this unsightly
eruption, he tried a great number cf reputed
remedies, but he was not benefitted by the same,
indeed it became doubtful to his friends whether
be would ever overcome this disfigurement. At
length he tried Holloway’s Ointment and Bills,
and these medicines quickly produced a benefi
cial change. By continuing with these excellent
medicines for eight weeks he was radically cured.
