From the jXuiional Intelligencer.
Mr. Smith—An unfounded story, disho
norable, i tuink. to iet, has been copied from
nothcr paper into yoia’s, that colonel Burr had
so mistaken my character, as to communicate
tome schemes to subvert the government; and
that after allowing inyseii to he the depositary
cl bis secrets, 1 had had the treachery to bc
trav him. ‘i he story ts not told exactly in
* these words, nut such is the only impression,
so iar as regards myself, it is calculated to
make.
Cos one! Burr never communicated any
scheme of any kind to me. I never made a com
munication to the executive, in relation to colo
nel Butr. In common with others who some
times associated with col Burr, I have heard,
from him speculative opinions respecting our
govern men, ; and 1 have sometimes spoken of
these opinions in private circles, not with appn -
i ballon. Hence 1 suppose it was conjectured,
J that 1 might know enough to he a witness in
J the case ol Boil man and Swartwout. I was
summoned, but was not sworn, the attorney of
the district being satisfied from a statement I
gave him in court, written in court, I believe at
his request, that my evidence could not be ma
teria!.
You will. I doubt not, do me the justice to
insert this in your paper to-morrow.
