LEGISLATURE OF GEORGIA
House of Representatives, JVuv. 17//;, 18C7.
[l'he following resolutions were introduced,
at the commencement of the present session
of the legislature, by Mr. Bryan, of Chatham ;
the preamble was proposed by Mr. E. H.
Cummins, of Wilkes ; and the word 4i una
nimously” was inserted on motion of Mr. Da
ties, of Chatham.]
Whereas, in the year 1795, as will be recol
lected with emotions of indignation by every
virtuous citizen of ttiis state, a combination of
inlluential and monied men, succeeded, by bri
bery and corruption , in obtaining the passage
of an act, conveying the right of this state in a
well known portion of the Western country,
Called Yazoo, to several companies of pur
chasers—and whereas the succeeding legisla
ture, duly convinced of the flagitious agency
which had procured the act aforesaid, virtu
ously determined fey a rescinding law, to pro
hibit all contracts, conveyances and grants, ori
ginating in that fraud, from being carried into
cflect; it solemnly becomes this legislature to
support and preserve consistent the reputation
ot this state, by denying the statements of a
band ot speculators, combined, from Ncw-
Hampshire to the Mississippi* to embezzle
the funds either ot this state, or the United
Elates, and to riot on the profits of an exten
. she tract of country, in alledging, falsely , that
the state of Georgia contemplated in, the arti
cles of cession to the United States of her
western country in 1803, any compromise of
l/ic Yazoo claims , in any ieay whatever. And
inasmuch as it is impoitant to the decision of
congress on this subject, and greatly so to the
dignity and justice ol the state of Georgia, that
the truth, as ids, in this matter, should be fully
and unequivocally defined, it is therefore,
llesolved unanimously, by the Senate and
House of Representatives of the state of Geor
gia, in general assembly met, That they have
viewed, and still view with abhorrence, the at
tempt made by a set of unprincipled men,
commonly known by the appellation of Yazoo
men, to corrupt a majority of the legislature of
this state, in the year 1795, which attempt was
rendered abortive by the virtue of the succeed
ing legislature.
Resolved unanimously, That it never was the
intention of the legislature of this state, when
they ratified certain articles of agreement and
cession, entered into by commissioners ap
pointed by the stale of Georgia and the Uni
ted States, to evince any desire to compromise
claims that originated in fraud, and which were
rendered invalid by the state sovereignty.
Resolved uuanimously, That the thanks of
the senate and house of representatives of the
state of Georgia, be given to John Randolph,
member of Congress from the state of Virgi
nia, ant/the late majority of the ninth congress
for their virtuous and manly opposition to a
compromise, which would, in their opinion,
equally compromit the dignity of the govern
ment of the United States, and the sovereignty
of this state.
Resolved unanimously, That the governor
be requested to transmit copies of the forego
ing resolutions to Mr. Randolph, to the secre
tary of state, secretary of the treasury, and the
attorney-general of the United States.

Leghorn, September 2.
The French general, Miollis, entered this ci
ty on the 29th ult. at the head o 4000 men, in
cluding 800 cavalry, and has actually taken
possession of the port and the forts. On the fol
lowing day he issued a proclamation, in which
every person is charged to make a return of the
English goods in their magazines, store-houses,
tkc. within 24 hours, underpin of confiscation.
The sunn; proclamation prohibits any vessel
from leaving the harbor, or the city, till further
orders.

Liver pool, September 23.
The news of the surrender of Copenhagen
reached Liverpool on Friday, but excited none
of those joyous sensations we have witnessed on
tiie arrival of intelligence of the defeat of the
enemies of Old England. The church-bells,
indeed, tolled, we presume, to the memory of
the departed honor of Britain ; but the dismal
sound was of short continuance, and the gene
rous feelings and good sense of the people of this
town, prevented them from participating in the
horrid joy of the minions of ministers. Had
halt such a force been taken in open and honor
able war, such as that we have formerly waged,
the patriotism of our townsmen would have
blazed through the streets, and been heard in
mutual and lively congratulations ; but all was
gloom and the car was saluted only with pathe
tic sympathy ar.d condolence with the unhappy
Danes ! The degradation of a brave and virtu
ous people, tbe deaths of thousands of innocent
victims, the destruction of a great part of a
peaceful city, were not matters of rejoicing for
& generous public, however they may affurd a
theme of delight for a degenerate administra
tion 1 ‘l'he government may justly consider the
disapprobation of the people (and we understand
it has been general) as a protest against the
measure.
TIIE LETTER CARRIER.
A wag at the gallows, w ho relish’d a jest,
With a ris.ible phiz, thus the hangman address’d :
•‘Well Jack, I am going to visit the place,
V'here-your father is gone, and the rest of your
race:
Til, a chance but I sec him ; and you, my good
friend,
Id ay by me your respects to the family send.”
Ketch gravely replied, as he fastened the twine,
*• I'll beg leave to trouble you, sir, with a line.”

Captain Foster arrived at Beverly yesterday,
63 days from Marseilles, furnished us with a
note lie received the moment before he sailed.
We also received from captain Foster a file of
the Journal de Paris, to August 31, l'cr which wc
acknow ledge our obligations. The fellow mg is
a translation of the note:
“ Letters received at Marseilles the 9th Sep
tember from Leghorn, announce the entry into
that place of a corps or French troops, who took
possession of the port, and the fortress of the
port —and they assures us, that an EMBARGO
had been put upon all vessels.”
COMMUNICATION.
The representations, which have lately tak
en place in this city, under the management of
Messrs. Kannie and Berry, are indeed calculat
ed to excite astonishment, and are amply enti
tled to public approbation.
The singular and wonderful faculty possesrd
by Mr. Uanuie, of communicating to different
sources hisypice, (commonly denominated Ven
triloquism) is a gift of nature. Its effects are
truly miraculous; his imitations of uifferrent
animals, birds, &c. arc wonderful, and theirex
ecution is deserving of that applause, which
they obtain.
His deceptive performances, which are cal
led slight of hand are equal to any thing of the
kind, ever presented in America.
Mr. Berry's execution of his inanimate figures
deserves the encomiums, which they have re
ceived. l heir situations are often highly ludi
crous.
The tumbling of both ot these gentlemen is
eminently entitled to applause, in tine, the)
deserve more encouragement, than Tam sorry
to say they have found—and if the public will
attend their exhibitions, no doubt they will co
incide in opinion with the writer of this article.
