ers, and alt others whose names arc not therein •
mentioned, but who are nevertheless in (#- 1
fault, the following extract from the Tax Laws,
of this state, now in force, are published, .and to
which particular attention is required, as ih:
laws will be infbrced :
“ .in ,iCT to raise a Tax for the suf.fiort r,f
Government, for the year 1805.
• Section 8. That if any person or p .rt,ons
shall neglect or refuse to give in a return of
his, her or their taxable property, or shall be .
convicted of fraud, or making a Lise return’
thereof, he, she or they shall be liable to pay to
the clerk of the Inferior Court of the county,
a fine of ten dolltfl's lor every hundred dollais,
valuation so neglected or conceale,,” kc. ,
‘"Section 18. Every person or persons, refits- *
, ing or neglecting as aforesaid, shall forfeit and
pay for every such neglect, the sum cl one dol
lar for every free malt, above the age of twenty <
one years ; anu the sum of one dollar for every ‘■
pegro; tne sum of eighty tents on every hun- 1
tired dollars value o every lot, wha f, la<ids and
buildings, within the limits of any town, village
or boiough.”
“ Section 19. H’bcreas divers persons, now
resident in this state, import large quantities of
goods, wares and meivhanoize, and evade the
payment of taxes, by not being in this sr ate at
the time usually piescribtd for making returns
for taxes: For lemeuy, Be ii emeted, That i
buy non resident who shall expose to sale, any j
goods in this stale, shall.on Ins annul, ur with- i
in seven days at.er entering the same, n.ake
returns, on oaih, to the receiver of tax returns,
and give security to the tax-coiiettoi to pay the
same, on or before the time specified lot pay
ing taxes, imposed by this act. Broviued, 1 hat
such goods shall not be liable to p.,y the tax
when they may be exported, or priced in the ;
hands of .• vendue-muster, to be actually dis- ,
posed of by him or them. And on failing to !
comply as aforesaid, it shall and may be lawful |
lor ihe tax-collector to proceed against him or j
them in like manner as against persons about :
to remove out of the county.
“ Setiion 20. That it shall be the duty of,
the judges of the superior courts, rt the ‘
next term after the returns of the receiv
ers of taxable property shall have been n.uoc,
agreeably to this act, to give it in charge 10,
the grand juries of the several corn ties,!
that they do present all such persons as may
be defaulters under this act. Provided , ne
vertheless, That where any person or persons
who may he a defaulter shall, beiorc any
information or prestntu cut be rnat.e against
him or them, go to the clerk of the supe
rior court oi his county, and give in a list
of his property, upon oath, in the same man
ner as ought to have been given to the receiver,
such person or persons shall be exonerated
from the pains and penalties of this act. Aid
each person shall pay to such clcik, ior taking
such list, fifty cents.”
An ACT to amend and continue in force the afore
said act.
“ Section 2. That the clerks of the superior
courts shall not be at liberty to receive any te
turn of taxable property, as directed in the be
fore recited act, but it shall be the duty ol the
clerks of the inferior courts, in the different
counties, at any time before a digest of the
taxes should be completed (and not after) on
application, on oath, kc.
