An Address
TO THE PEOPLE OF THE U. STATES,
ON THE IMPORTANCE OF ENCOURAGING

Tending to shew, that by a due encourage
ment ot these essential interests, the nation
will be rendered more respectable abroad, ami
more prosperous at home. Together with ar
account ot the IMPROVEMENT IN SHEEP
AT Ail! IN G TON, the native sheep of Smith’s

the country at large.
BY GEORGE W. P. CUSTIS, Esq.
Os Arlington house, in the district of Coinin’.:..
At a time when the energies of the natim
seem awakened to the state of our for* : <m am
domestic, concerns, we conceive that the m pm -
| tant interests of agriculture and manufactures
i should meet with a Considerable share of the
1 public discussion. Certain it is, that at no pe
| riot/ of our political history, could these nation
al subjects excite more interest, or ue more
properly urged to the notice of the public mind,
; File unsettled and impending appearance oi
. our foreign affairs, and me present disturbed
I state of tlie European world, renders it doubly
i necessary for the citizens of America to cherish
j and promote their domestic policy, whereby
they may derive those resources which are now
| obtained from abroad, and create wealth and
industry within themselves. Too long have
these important and patriotic interests been
neglected. The n.tion now feels their want,
ami we trust will duly provide for their support.
Government, hithereto engaged in other con
i corns, wfii now cherish those domestic institu-
I tions, which will preserve tlie nation’s dignity,
i and pr/mote the people’s welfare.
On the merits of the little Work vve art
• ah';/ to issue to the public, it is net our pro
-1 vin/c to decide; but of the advantages to be
derived from its sale, vve would beg leave t<
say every thing which a disinterested exertion

demands. And as the profits of this work, af
ter the expences of publication arc paid, win
he solely devoted to the purpose of the Arling

expect a liberal patronage from a discerning
