Yesterday we received Lisbon papers to'the
23 h ^ept. by tbs brig Coromandel, capt. Mes-
servey.
\Ve do not find in them any letters from the
grand armies, oor any information ofany move
ments thereios.
The verbal accounts state, that nothing had
occurred in tho armies.
General Ballesteros was at Algeziras, where
the French were expected to make an attack ;
and he h id made preparations to repel it.
Marshal Beie-ford had his head quarters
near Litbon, fiotn whence he was sending re-
inforcciflems to.the Portuguese army.
The grand army is stationed in Portugal in
two large columns, the first under lord Wel
lington, has 23 t 0f)9-infantry, and 4,000 cavalry,
in front of Almeida the second column under
general Hill, has 13.000 infantry, and 2,SCO ca
valry—forming a line from Elvas to Gastello
Branco; «ach column is strong in artillery.—.
The Portuguese troops under general Bevcs-
ford are nuw well disciplined, and commanded
by British officers; they have no amount in
cavalry, but their infantry,' effective in the
field, is 52,000 ; and ten regiments ofnficrr en
are now raising, which ate by far the most use-
lul 'l oops, on account of the rocky mountainous
state ol he country.
The .’rench arc weak in Spain, and are now
concentrating- themselves as fast as possible, tb
prevent the desultory warlaie of the Spaniuids.
