Since our last we have been favored by our
friends with New-York papers to the 23d ins'.
Such extract as we had time to copy, and
sootn to admit, will be found in this afternoon’s
paper.

Last evening the polls closed in the diffeient
waidsfor .he election of charter officers ; but
we wee not able to learn the result fot this
morning’s paper.
The recent adjustment of the affair of the
Chesapeake is viewed at Washington as the
precursor to a settlement of all the differences
subsisting between this country and Great-Bri-
tain. It is said, that Mr. Foster has not only
ample powers, but has expressed a willingness,
>o enter on a negotiation which shall have for
/ts object an accommodation of all the differen
ces, which have so long, and so injuriously,
impaired the harmony of the two countries ;
and that in consequence of these amicable
■mat^'ifesiatiors, Mr. John Quiocy Adams has
been nominated by the president as minister
plenipotentiary from the United States to the
court of London, who is to be succeeded at the
court of St. Petersburg by Geotge W. Li ving,

The ship Cordelia, Conner, has arrived at
"Philadelphia, from the Isle of France anil Ba
tavia, having touched at the later port for sup
plies. Left brig Fox, of Philadelphia discharg
ing—the Cordelia was from Teneriffe for Ba
trivia, but was turned off by a British blockad
ing squadron, and was informed that the gov
ernor had burnt the city, and had retired into
the interior with the troops and inhabitants.

rpgrrted bv his acquaintances, Mr. Owen P.
Roberts, in the4Jth year of his age. He sus
tained the evils of a lingering illness with Chris
tian patience, resignation and fortitude. His
residence was but transient in Augusta, haring
arrived here early in the summer, in pursuit
of*health, which was dented him in the lower
country. He was a native of Pennsylvania,
and a mechanic of first rate talents, which ren
ders his loss to society the more considerable.
Mr. Roberts was a member of'he Fraternity of
Ancient York Masons; and, consequently, as a
toki-n of regard to his memory, he was buried
with masonic honors. He died in a firm confi
dence that those virtues which had gained him
respect in this life, would secur • him a seat " In

snatched from this world. Innocence, candor,
sweetness ol temper anti good morals combin
ed, is the panegyric offered to her never to be
forgotten memory, by her friends and all who
