CITY OF SAVANNAH,
In Council, March 8,1813.
On motion of alderman Charlton, Mranrf|ji||
by alderman Harris.
The mayor and aldermen of tho city of Sa
vannah, feel it their duty to express,' occasion
ally on subjects of national impbriance, the sen*
timents and opinions of the citizens, whom
they havo the honor to represent; and there*
fore avail themselves of this opportunity, to
tender, in behaU of this city, their admiration
of. and gratitude for the signal services of col.
Williams, and his brave soldiers of Tennessee,
who with a few of the citizens of this state, vo
lunteered in aa expedition against the Semino*
le Indians, for the defence of cor southern
frontier, and have used their utmost effotls to
chastise and disperse that tribe of plunderers,
and assassins.
Amidst all the privations of a long and pain*
ful match, these volunteers, abandoning the
ease and comforts of domestic life, and a peace*
lul residence in their own state, at their own
expense, have bravely penetrated the wilds of
our southern frontier, in quest of an insidious, in*;
placable and barbarous foe, thereby anticipating
and repelling at the hazard of their lives, and
with the utmost fortitude and patience, the
predatory and merciless recursions of the sa*
vage enemy.
This noble and. disinterested conduct, me*
rits the applause and gratitude of every section
of our great federal family, but more particu*
iarly of the citizens and people of Georgia.
The mayor and alderman of Savannah, will
not withhold their tribute of respect.
Therejore retained, That the said mayor and
aldermen, are deeply Impressed with a sense
of obligation conferred upon the people of
Georgia, by the gallant col. Williams, of Ten*
nessee, and his brave patriotic band of volvi*
teebs, and hereby tender to him. and 'them,
in behalf of the city of Savannah, their thanks,
gratitude and applause.
Resolved, That this resolution be published,
and that alderman Charhon, Harris ami Read,
be a committee to present the same to col.
Williams.
Extract from the Minutes.
