OUR DU i Y.
In timet or actually existing dang?r. it most
solemnly behoves every man, who, devoid nt
' a| l foreign predilections, feels only a deter mi
nate affection for bis native land, to be vigilant
in detecting, and strenuous in exposing the
base violators of her laws. If the laws are not
respected, what becomes of the republic ?—
what were the national mottos of Greece,
Sparta, and Athens ? Let those, who are c.ipa
ble ol replying, say whit should be our’s now.
Because England has not yet brought the heat
of baltls ioto the very heart ol our country • be.
cause the idea of self prestrv. tion (for so irre-
fragably it was) has deterred her, f..r a limited
period, from her anticipated depredations, let
not our iust indignation or patriotic rage sub-
aide. Preparation for war, even in peace, i:
Wisdom. To he ready tor it, at this season, be-
Comes, in a duplicate ratio, the sacred duty of
every American citizen. Hew must the spirits
of our fathers swell with indignation (tf indeed
they are susceptible of our trail passions) to
hear their descendants (or, at least a limited
portion of them) defending the aggressions of
that very enemy from whom for themselves
and us thry wrested liberty ! Sacred gift1 we
will protect you while we live, and even in
death reincmuer that we enjoyed you.
In every contest r.f a political description, a
decisive distinction should be made between
those which evidently proceed merely from a
difference in ‘pr.timent relative to the rational
interests, ami those which result from private
views, or personal animosities. This position,
it is confidently believed, will be denied by no
rational man. With regard to all matters of a
political nature the judgment alone is to be ex
ercised for politics do not admit, like mi
thematics, of positive demonstration. Political
trulli must he established by argument; but
when an uniform system of denunciation against
men in power is exhibited by an opposition in
any country, are we not to conclude that pri
vate-views or personal animosities ere the go
verning principles of their opposionists ) Oh <
surely. Mr. Madison and the majority are sys
tematically denounced by the retailers of ,>o!iti.
cal scandal throughout the country. Is it pc.s.
sihle th^y can do no good act, if merely by
chance ? Yes, thank Heaven ! they have don.
mdny good acts j and the denunciations of men
devoted to England, will but increase the al
lections of those firmly resolved t j maintain the
rights of America, toward? them.
