The United States.’ schooner Alligator, sail
ing master Asnanisda, arrived here on 3a
'urday evening, in 3 days from Cumherlatpi-
Island, where ?he had been with a despatch
from m*jnr general riNCKNET, announcing to
admiral Cnckburn the Ce.'.-aiion of hostilities.
Admirable Cockburn had received no des
patches direct from his government on the sub
ject r-f peace, and intimac.-d that he should ra
tlin his position upon Cumberland umitl he
received cfficia! advices of the ratification of
the treaty.
By this arrival we have a confirmation of
the news from Savannah, of the British having
been defeated in a predatory expedition u)joh
the river St. Mary’*. They acknowledged a
loss of about 30 in killed and wounded. One
midshipman died of his wounds. And was buried
on Wednesday last on Cumberland. The cap*
tain of a bomb ship, and the captain of the
Primrose brig, were both badly wounded.
It was said that official information bad been
received from Bermuda, of the capture of the
United S ates frigate President. They repre-
sen’ed the loss on board our frigate in killed
and wounded, at one hundred and ninety men t
that she was taken by the Endymion, and that
they lo-t but twenty men. Two of the Presi
dent’s masts went over the side the day after
her capture ; but she had arrived safe at Ber.
muds.
There had been no reinforcement of troops
at Cumberland—their whole force was said to
be from 16 to 1800 men. No late news from
New Orleans.^ Charleston Courier.
