Tls a subject, I know, that will make many
smile,
That a poet should find inspiration in “ile."
We know that the wisest men once in a while
Run mad as March hares ” through less things
. than “ile."
While the world’s running mad I’ll put in my
‘'spile,"
And “butt r my bread," if I can, with some
“ile."
Could I find a little to make my “pot bile,"
Would any one blame me for boring for “ile.”
Men quit all vocations to prospect" for sile,
(soil)
And bore all their friends with their prorprets of
“ile."
Ah. many a sharper has made a b'g pile,
Who bcriui into greenhorns in “boring for ile- - ’
After money I’ve lost I have trudged mile on
mile,
And been promised it, certainly, when they
“struck ile."
But for fear that’my friends may get sick with
the bile,
I’ll stop—merely wishing they all will “strike
lie."
And let us all hope that all swindlers vile,
Will be sent where they’ll quickly be turned into
“ile.”
Washington, D. C , Feb. 11, 1835.
An Incident of Clifton Bridge.
For eight years after the Marquis of
Northampton had laid the foundation
stone of tlae Leigh Woods abutment,
workmen and the public in general were
enabled to pass over the immense chasm
by means of an iron bar seven hundred
teet in length, which was hung across
the river. On the bar there was a ‘-cra
dle' basket, or car, and persons who
wished to make the dangerous passage,
paid a fee which varied from one to five
shillings. By this conti ivace thousands
of persons crossed the Avon. The bas
ket ran by its own gravity down tha in
cline to the centre < f the bar, and was
drawn up to the other side by means of
a rope. On one occasion, a Somerset
shire wedding party went to see the
fairy bridge, and the bridegroom having
had enough cider to make him adventw
rous, persuaded the not willing bride to
make the Hying passage. The two got
into the basket; but win n they had
reached the centre of the bar it was
found that the communicating rope had
broken ; and as no provision had been
made for such a contra-temps , the enthu
siastic husband and his newly wedded
wife dangled in mid-air tor several hours,
their friends on the abutment shouting
to them that they would have to remain
in the basket all night. This novel way
of spending the honeymoon was avoid
ed, however; but thewparty were not
rescued until they had passed several
hours in their strange carriage.— Cham
