f<ON»K VITY OF BRITISH STATESMEN. It is a remarkable fact iu vital statistics, that British statesmen live long beyond the average duration of human life, and even beyond that period allotted by Scripture as the extreme limit to man's existence. Two members of the Cabinet have passed that iimit, the former of whom. Lord Palmerston, is 81, and the latter. Lord John Russell, is 73 years. Several are past the middle period of life, the lx>rd Chancellor being Milner i Gibson 58, and Mr. Gladstone 56. Lord j Derby, the Tory leader, is CO, and Disraeli j on. Bnt this is not all: Lord Brougham, i still living, is nearly, it not quite, 9u; Lord I Lyndhurst, who died only recently, was a 1 Jitfle beyond 00, and made a vigorous speech j u few days before his dpath, in the House of j Peers. But it is not only among her statesmen that we find these remarkable-examples of longevity. Her judges, with few exceptions, have lived almost to an extreme old age. In no part of the European continent or the United States can we find in public men the same instances of longevity. Now. if we iock to the influences of moral causes for the soiution of this phenomenon, we should fail, for the wear and tear of the faculties is cer tainly not less, if not greater, among the men who have to fight the battles of the government and the opposition in the House of Commons, and who have to undergo ad ministrative labors in England, than in any other part of the world. The duties of those who administer the laws, and especially those who travel the circuits, are not less arduous. Are we, then, to look to physical' causes for a solution ?—to the invigorating English cli mate for the cause of this extraordinary lon gevity ? Be the cause what it may, the fact is indisputable, that a large majority ot Eng lish statesmen and judges reach beyond the average duration of human life. *** News From the Coast and from the In terior. —We have received a paper from Jacksonville, Florida, (the Florida Union; dated the 17th inst., and have also been fa vored witji Augusta papers of the 19th inst., from all of which we propose to give extracts in our Evening Edition. TttlßniC OF UESPECT. South Western Railroad Company, > Macon Ga., June Bth, 180".. j At a regular meeting of the Board of Di rectors held at their office this day, William A. Black, Esq., introduced the ’ following Preamble and Resolutions, which were unani mously adopted: '. ■ ✓ Since the last meeting of this Board our honored and beloved President, Richard R. Cuvier, Esq., ha3 been called to pay the debt of nature. This dispensation of Provi dence has filled our hearts with the deepest sorrow. His long connection with the Com pany, and his able administration as Presi dent of its a flairs has contributed vastly to its success and much to its character. Asa Railroad man no one had a better re putation , as a Financier none exercised mere influence amongst Commercial classes; as a business man no one possessed more energy, fidelity and honor , as a citizen none excelled him in all the qualities that adorn the gentleman; &3 a friend no one had a more noble heart, or a more liberal hand. The death of such a man is truly a loss to the world ; full of years and honors he has pre ceded us to the grave , as his survivors we lament his loss, we will cherish his memory and strive to emulate his noble virtues. Be it therefore Resolved, That we deeply deplore the death of Richard R. Cuyler, £sq., our Presi dent and friend, and deeply sympathise With his faniiiy and friends in this their great be reavement. Resolved, That a Committee of three be appointed of this Board to open a corres- S cadence with the Directors of the Central lailroad & Banking Company upon the sub ject of uniting with this Company in erecting a suitable monument over the remains of our deceased officer. • Resolved, That these proceedings be pub lished and a cop}- thereof be transmitted to his family.
