LOCAL MATTERS. THE RIVER BATTERIES. Lt. W. H. Walrath, Acting Ordnance Offi cer, made a visit of inspection to the river batteries yesterday afternoon. sort Jackson and Battery Lee were thoroughly inspected. Both these forts are without garrisons, and the silence, solitude and rank growth of weeds, choking up the pathways, and flour ishing iu the crevices of the brick walls and stone work, made a picture of otter desola tion. The quarters of the- officers and men within Fort Jackson were found roofless, fal len and blackened with fire. The immense ly strong bomb-proof, an incline root of railroad-iron, was still perfectly intact; but the magazine was empty and the debris of the embrasures leading to it blocked up the pas sages. The hot-shot furnace wdl battered and broken up, and stood half buried in fallen bricks. All was desolate and. ruinous; the tall weeds almost hid from sight the disused guns, aud sprouted through the wreck of the fallen gates. Most of the guns still remain in Fort Jackson, but, they'are spiked, and the carriages of many of them are broken and lifeless- In Battery Lee, Lt. Walrath found that the carriage of a lfirge colutnbiad had been set fire to aud was still burning, giving out volumes of smoke. The carriage was al mußt entirely consumed, and the gun had fallen into the ashes, damaged probably past remedy. This aestructive work had been done, it was thought, by martivding irop-thieves, as a great portion of the iron machinery of the gun,—wheels, trucks, bed plates, etc., bad disappeared throughout the works. Battery Lee is a most tormidable fortification, and was found in tolerably good order, though many of the gun-carriages were injured aud the mortars were dismount ed. The quarters of the garrison and the railroad have totally disappeared ; the space by the earth works is a pool of stagnant water overgrown with reeds, and thickly strewn with bags of gunpowder. The, forts and the materiel in them have suffered greatly frgm thieves and marauders since they were evacuated, when they were left in. ,a comparatively uninjured state.— Nothing could be easier than to commit these depredations upon the valuable government property lying there, as there is no guard to prevent payties landing from the river, and making free with It. . Lieut. Walrath is taking measures for the immediate removal of the ordnance to the Depot at Hittou Head. Married bv Proxy. —One of members of the 103d U. S C. TANARUS., wah to have*been married recently, to a blooming colored dam sel of Savannah, but just as the arrangt - meats for the nuptials were nearly com pleted his regiment was ordered to Fort Pul aski, and the expectaut had to leave with it. He wtQte to., his espoused, informing her that he was too good a soldier to stay behind, and that therefore a post pouement was unavoidable. Shortly after he sent another letter .from the fort, stating that it would probably be a long time before »he could attend personally to the matrimonial affair, and that, on the whole, as the prepara tions might not keep and should not be wasted, he would delegate his groomsman to represent him in the ceremony, reserving te himself the right to claim her as his wife when he returned to Savannah. The wed ding came off as he suggested. Quarantine Established. —ln view of the necessity of quarantine regulations, the au • thorities have deemed it proper to anchor the steamer Standisb off Tybee Island, with Sur i geon J Leslie Snow, 153d New’ York Volun teers, for the purpose of inspecting all ves sels coming from foreign ports. The Standish carries one gun, and is manned by a detach ment of the 153d New York Volunteers, under command of Lieut. C. T. Burns. We feel assured that our entire community will bear us out in our expressions of grati tude for these restrictive measures, as every one must acknowledge" and appreciate their importance. The Sale of thb Amazon To’Dit.— The attention of capitalists is directed to the sale of the steamer Amazon, to take place to-day, at 12 o'clock, in front of the Exchange. As a river boat, she is unsurpassed us to capa city. carrying 1,800 bales of cotton, being tight draft; she can ascend the river when aot navigable for other boats. At the pres ent rates of freights, it is only necessary to call attention to the sale. See advertisement; the sale will be positive. She is in good order, and ready to receive cargo at once The Mj-kshall House.— We understate! there is a good prospect that the Marshall House will soon be re-opened to the public. For along time it was used as a hospital, and furniture und fixtures considerably damaged. Mr. Win. Coolidge, long the popular propri etor, now occupies the house, and has a large number of boarders, but cannot open to transient patrons until the furniture 1 fixtures are more thoroughly replen ■ Ished. the Zodiac.— This steam *fiip, of Messrs. Hunter & Gammell’s line, which arrived at this* port oa Wednesday morning last, departed yesterday afternoon. The Zodiac brought from New York a full cargo. It was discharged by working Wed nesday night, and the ship thereby enabled to take on board a full cargo and saii at the appointed hour yesterday. Mr. H. J. Dick erson, the well known stevedore, discharged and loaded the Zodiac. Capt. Olive* Matthews. —By orders from the War Department, Capt. Oliver Matthews late Assistant Adjutant General of the Dis trict of Savannah, has been assigned to duty with Major Gen. O. O. Howard, who has charge of the Freedman's Bureau. Arrival of Another Cargo for Ander son ville Cemeteht.— The steamship Fair banks, Capt. Hunter from Washington, D. C.,. arrived at this port yesterday af ternoon.
