local matter ■he Government Work* in Savannah- Presentation to Mr. Edmond Slater by the Workmen. On Saturday afternoon last Mr. Edmond ifeter, Superintendent of the United States Jachiae Shop, located at the Eastern Vhaives, formerly known as “Miller’s Foun- Irv,” met with a surprise of an agreeable aiiture. A few minutes before five o'clock all the operatives of the machine works as sembled iu the fcarpenter shop. Mr. Slater, [ften about to leave, having been informed ;hat lie could not go at present, quietly sub mitted to his arrest and repaired thither. Mr. Rufus P. Hawkes, on behalf of the tvhite operatives, presented, in the following remarks, a superb hunting case gold watch, from the celebrated American Watch manu factory of P- S. Bartlett, Waltham, Mass. : ■ “Mr. Slater, in behalf of the employees o this Department, I have the pleasure to ireseut a watch as a token of our ligh appreciation for your ever kind atten iou and gentlemanly bearing towards us. Lndin Injure, as you observe life’s fleeting iours indicated upon the tlial of this vateb, please remember U 9 as your true ■fiend sand well*wishers for your future leaitli aqd prosperity.” Mr. Slater responded and thanked the op tatives for their kindness, stating that he lever found more able and willing men than 1$ had working for Government under his mpervision. Charles E. Middleton, for many years con lected with Miller's Foundry as a pattern taker, on behalf of the colored operatives resented Mr. Slater in a highly creditable isnner and with true expressions of friend hip, a fine gold chain.’ The watch bears the following inscrip lon. “Presented to E. Slater, Chief of Ma ine Engineers, by the employees of the Gov rnrnent Works of Savannah, Ga., Aug. Ist. BGS-” After the presentation, Messrs. Chas. Felsh and Wm. Solt furnished the liquids in bundance and all who were present depart ii from the works with good wishes tor Mr later.- Iu connection with this little affair t is proper for us to state that imme liately after the city w T as captured by Gen. Sherman, Mr. Slater came to Savannah and ook charge of the works of. which he is Su >eiintendent. Not a tool nor a lathe was >n the premises, the Confederate authorities raving removed or destroyed them. By Mr. Hater s exertions all that was required to Inake nearly a complete shop was secured. By making known that he desired to se ure the services of mechanics located in Sa vannah, and who had her interests at heart, he ioon was able to show a force of men ready md willing at all hours to comply with all requests made upon them. The first work done by local mechanics was on the Philadelphia, and the mechanics irere Paul Bulger, Wm. Carr aud Wm. C. Saruham, Machinists-, James J. McKenzie, toiler Maker and Blacksmith. Next followed ;he necessary repairs on the steamers Jeff. Davis and Gen. Lee, captured from the Con federates. Mr. Slater has at present under bis supervision at the Government Works, about one hundred and seventy-five men. , Masonic. Georgia Chapter, No. 3, has been called off for the Summer. The next regular meeting will.be on the evening of the first Monday in October. • The Council has closed until winter. Solomon's Lodge hold regular communica tions on the first Thursday of each month. Ancient Landmark Lodge is closed till the first Tuesday in October. Zerubbabel Lodge meets on the second Thursday of each month. Ciinton Lodge is the only one which meets twice per month. It has a regular commu nication on every other Monday evening. The Grand Lodge of the State meets in December. , * Arrest of a Deserter. —On Saturday morning last, Lieut. Wm. S. Hoxie learned that private A. C. Bennett, of Company C. 75th New York Vet. Volunteers, was on board she stgfljner U. S. Grant, and intended to desert from the service. Lieut. Hoxie proceeded immediately to the steamer and arrested Bennett. He was lodged in the Provo9t Guard House. . Schooner from Nassau Detained at Quar antine.—Tbe schooner Mary Agnes, from Nassau, arrived at quarantine, below Savan nah, on the 14th, and is detained there. She is consigned to Isaac D. Laßoche. She has seven passengers, and her cargo consists of railroad iron, merchandize, and a,small quan tity of fruits, principally pine-apples. Departure of the Amazon. —The steamer Amazon left at a late hour on Saturday night iast, under com in and of Capt. Richard John son, formerly captain of the steamer Swan, and well known in this Blty as a steamboat man. The Amazon took an exceedingly large freight. Troops to Leave Savannah.— This morn lDS at 4 o’clock four regiments are to leave savannah,- to march to the * Sub-District of Oemulgee, which is to Ijp commanded by ■ Col. J. W, Blanchard, of the 162d New York, f The regiments are as follows: 160th, 162d, ioth and 90th New York Yols., all under command of Col. Blanchard. The distance * to Hawkinsville, the headquarters of the District, is about 180 miles, but the march ftili be made by easy stages. The Steamer Augusta is expected here tg day from Augusta. Gen. Brannan’s Instructions to the Com mandants of Sub-Districts, embraced M Gen. Order No. 4, published in another off umn, will be found important aDd interest ing. # Lamar's Cotton Press.— Capt F. W. Lap ham has now in successful operation the large and extensive cotton presses, for merly owned by Charles A. L. Lamar, on the Eastern Wharves. The sheds and warehouse attached have a capacity for storage of near 20,000 bales of cotton. Arrival of the Steamer Svlph.— This steamer, from Jacksonville, Fernandina, etc., arrived yesterday. The patronage which was promised this new line warrants its con tinuation by Mr. Charles H, Campbell the Agent, e give the passenger list under head of Shipping Intelligence. • Personal.— Bvt. Brig. Gen. H. D. Wash burn, lately commanding a District in the Department of the South, and now assigned as commandant of the Sub-District of the Altamaha, in Gen. Brannan’s District, ar rived here yesterday, and is staying at the Pulaski House. Sailing of *he Ship Caravan.— The first class Clipper Ship Caravan, Lawler, sailed yesterday with the largest shipment of goods which has yet left port, consisting of 1009 half sos cotton, 150 bales of domestics and a large lot of merchandise. Charles L. Colby & Cos., were the shippers. Arrival from Hawkinsville, Pulaski County.— The steamer Comet, Capt. Horn, arrived last evening from Hawkinsville, la den with cotton. She brought only two pas sengers, and no Important news. Capt Horn reports the river very low. Mustered out of Service.— Yesterday the laborious work of mustering out of service tbe 131st New York Volunteers, Col. Day’s Regiment was completed. The first availa ble transport arriving in Savannah will con vey this Regiment home. Launch.— This morning Mr. Rufus P. Hawkes will, at nine o’clock, launch from his ship yard, east of the Savannah & Oge chee Canal, the new Schooner recently built by him Enterprise. —Mr. W. H. Watson, clerk in tbe Savannah Post Office, has purchased from Messrs. Sherwood & Young their en tire stock of groceries in Farrel’s old stand, north-ea9t corner of Broughton aud Whita ker streets. Mr. Watson will, in a few days, have from the northern markets a large stock of new goods. Exhibition of the Sabbath School Chil dren of the First African Baptist Church. Yesterday afternoon the children in atten dance at the above Sabbath School, held their Annual Exhibition in the body of tbe Church. A large concourse of citizens and of members of tbe Church were in atten dance. The examination was conducted by the Rev. James Sims, Superintendant, and C. A. L. De La Motta, Assistant Superin dent. The proficiency of the scholars reflec ted much credit on the Teachers and the Su perintendents of the school. This morning at seven o’clock tire children will assemble at the Church, forra'a procession, and march to Vale Royal, west of the canal, where they will spend the day in a picnic. T HE COURTS. It was ordered that the speci fied amount due and costs be paid within fourteen days. Upon the application of John Low for per mission to occupy and control certaih prop erty, permission was granted, provided the same is not in the use of the military author ities. Upon the petition of Geo. A. Mercer, Esq., for authority to control certain property in the city of Savannah, held in trust for the use and benefit ol Mrs George Geordon and seven minor children, permission was grant ed if not used by the military. Permission was granted t)r. J. A. Winkler to occupy and control certain property in the City of Savannah ; also to J. A. Wink ler, for Mrs. J. J. Mitchell and children ; also J. A. Winkler, Trustee for Mrs. E. L. Davis; also J. A. Winkler Trustee for E. W. Robers ; also for J. A. Winkler Trustee for Mrs. E. J. Bealer. Upon petition of Andrew M.Ross and John McConoghey, executors of the will of John Finlayson, deceased, to occupy and control certain property ; permiseion was granted, provided the property is not used by the government. Upon the petition of Hon. Walter S. Chis olm, Attorney for Charles W. Brunner to occupy and control certain property, per mission granted while the same is not used for military purposes. Upon the petition of Hon. Walter S. Chis olm, attorney for E. W. Barstow, agent for his mother to occupy and control certain property, permission granted, provided the property is not used for military purposes. Capt. John W. Anderson appeared in open court, and in accordance with bis petition submitted, was appointed guardian of Miss Eliza A. Gilliam, orphan ot' Dr. James Gil liam, late Surgeon in the United Sates Navy. Also that certain cattle the property of the plaintiff, now in the county of Effingham, belonged to him, and that the plaintiff had authority to search for and take charge of said cattle, and that he be protected in the search ; and it further appearing to the Court that the plaintiff was in the rightful posses sion oi a quantity ot torn taken from him, and consumed by the defendant. It was or dered that the plaintiff recover against the. defendant the sum of $55 in the settlemeut of the corn so consumed. Counsel for plaintiff, A. W. Stone; lor defence, Levi S. Russell, Esq. United States vs. Mary Hall, Laura Wil liams, Caroline Wilson, Kittie Lee, (all co lored) —charged with Larceny from the bouse of Mr. Geo. S. Owens of •certain articles. Judgment—guilty. It was ordered that Mary Hall and Laura Williams be confined in the county jail for six months, Caroline Wilson for three month!} and Kittie Lee for four months. United States vs. Anthony Bennett (color ed) —charged with wearing United States uniform, contrary to orders, on the 22nd day of July, 1865. Plea—not guilty. Judg ment—not guilty. Prisoner discharged. United States vs. Chnrleslßobertson—Lar ceny committed on the 21st day of July, 1865. Ordered that the prisoner be discharged, there being no evidence lor the prpsecution. U. S. vs Andrew Johnson, (colored).— Larceny committed on the 21st day of July 1865. Judgment, guilty. It was ordered that the prisoner be turned over to the Provost Marshall with instructions to po’ice the streets for three months. [J In the case of the United States vs Stephen Hanlon, charged with selling liquor to enlis ted men of the U. S. Army. It appearing to the court that the said Stephen Hanlon is ill, it was ordered that the case be postponed until ten o’clock A. M., on Mon day, July 25th 1665, for decision. Counsel for defence Hon. P. M. Russell and Hon. W. S. Chisholm. U. S. vs A. Y. Smith, (colored). Charged with Larceny from the house of A. A. Solo mons, between the morning of the 18th apd nigh* of the 19th July 1865. Cotton. —There was a limited inquiry for the staple to-day, and the sales were confined to four bales, received by wagons from Burke county. The following are the particulars of sales viz: 3 bale 9, strict Middling, 45 cents; 1 bale, strict Middling, 44 cents. The only receipts were 23 bales by wagons from Burkrf f and Washington counties. Sunday Evening, July 23.
