Mr. Smith had Just returned from the interior, where he had made large purchases of the great staple, which he designed shipping to his house In New York. Mr Smlth purchased a large stock of goods for his house in Florida, and engaged a clerk for that concern, whom be also boaidedjat the hotel until he should complete his business arrangements here. Mr. Smith was short of ready change to pay a t&lance of freight—only fifteen dollars on seventy £ye bales of cotton. Mr. Smith borrowed that umount for a few minutes from anew made acquain tance, since which time Mr. Smith ha9uot been seen. It U suptffcsed Mr. Smith left for Charleston, but In the hurry of business, Mr. Smith forget to payhu hotel bill or to pay hU little accommodation. No cotton lias arrived here for Mr. Smith.
