A host of friends will rejoice it his well-deserved promotion. From New Yore.—The steamship Idaho, Captain Holmes, arrived from New York yesterday morning, consigned to Messrs. Brigham, Baldwin A Cos. The Idaho had a fair cargo and a number of passengers. We wore pleased to notice In the Purser’s office, Mr. Henry N. Meyer, formerly employed m the Quarter muster’.? and Trcrsury Departments hew, and who, we are sure, will make a popular and efficient Purser. Mr Meyer has our thank3 for full flies of papers. Capt. Holmes, an experienced navigator, Is com nattier or the Idelio. Death of ax old Citizen.—On Saturday last Mr. 0. \V. Davis received a telegram from O. H Lufbur otj announcing the demise in AugU3ta,on Saturday turning, at 4 o’clock, of Mr. Matthew Lufburrow, it the advanced age of 82 years. l!i. Lufburrow was a native of New Jersey. In scily life, after completing his apprenticeship as a Usscd and Muster Builder, he came to Savannah and made it his home. For many years he wasthe se nior partner of the firm of Lufburrow A Clark, Mas ter Builders. By strict industry and economy Mr. Lufburrow amassed a large property in this city. Mr. Lufburrow leaves a wife and two children and several grand children to mourn his demise. Beef and Menus.—Saturday afternoon last the market was supplied with beef and mutton of supe rior qualities. Mr, Samuel L. Piltman and Messrs. J. W. Glbbon3 A Son purchased In Appling county a large drove of fine beeves, and they will daily have on their it l.s tbia beautiful meat for sale. Mr. A. A. Davl3 and Mr. Clem C. Cooper also displayed mutton of superior qualities. We are pleased in noticing the enterprise of these gentlemen that they are de termined to have the market supplied with meats that will sell and give satisfaction, Mr. Pittman, in connection with Mr. Wm. H. Davis, when no beef could be purchased for Confederate money, advanced largely the solid “Benton drops,” and the poor of G&vannah, as well as the rich, were able, with Confederate currency, to purchase fresh meat, these two gentlemen sacrificing thousands of dollars In supplying the morket. This latter company wlli in a few weeks have a - steamer,” the benefits of which are almost unknown to our citizens. A steam fire engine for the city is much wanted. Should a vessel get ashore and bilge, the engine can be placed on board, pump the vessel out, and the company thereby receive salvage. Saturday evening last a number of the Young America Fire Company, No. 5, assembled at the Fire a ms’ Hall for reorganization. Mr. Chas. J. White was requested to act as Chairman, and Mr. W. D. Duon as Secretary. Mr. While br.edy explained the object of the meet ing. On motion, It was resolved, seconded and passed, that Messrs. Charles J. White, W. D. Dixon and C. F- Btoncho be appointed a Committee to se lect offloera and anew name for the Young America Fire Company, No. 5. Hem. rnlUp M. Russell, honorary member, was ad ded to the above Committee. The meeting then adjourned to meet on Wednes day evening next. Gbn. Butler not Rksionbd —A Washing ton despatch says: In regard to the numer ous statements put forth of late to the effect that Gen. Butler had repeatedly tendered his resignation, but that the government refused mo accept it, it may oe said that the office!* fwbo would naturally receive such a docu ment have no knowledge whatever that Gen. I Butler baa ever tendered his resignation, and ! furthermore, do not believe he ever did ten der it in any manner which would leave it open for acceptance. It may also be stated for the assurance of all general officers who really de-ire to resign, that there will be no heeitancy whatever in accepting their reslg nations. Tat a? or Cast. Wirz.— Capt Henry Wirz was arraigned before the Military Commis sion «u Monday last charged with malicious ly, wilfully ana traitorously combining, con federating and conspiring, together with Robert E. Lee, James A. Seddon, Northrop and others, to injure the health and destroy the lives ot Union soldiers in rebel and South ern prisons, and also with ninrder, in viola tion of the lawa and customs of war. The (specifications allege the most cruel practices, su h as starvation purposely, the vaccination of soldiers with impure matter, the furnishing of rotten food, the employment of blood hounds, &c After preliminary proceedings the court adjourned until Thursday.
