The Vanina also had a jaii list of passengers. # ‘ ELECTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF SAVANNAH.— At a regular meeting, Sid on the 6th Inst., for Clerk and" Sheriff of the City Court of Savannah, Hon. Philip M. Hassell was unanimously re-elected clerk of the City Court, and Captain Charles J. White was unanimously re-elected Sheriff. Mr. Russell, who has been Clerk of this Court since 1849, has been highly complimented by various pre i-irunents of Grand Jurors, and Is, we understand, c jusidered by the members of the Bar a very correct min In the management of his official duties. Capt. White has been Sheriff since September, 1888, and is considered a very competent, faithful, and vigilant o ff.cer. Removal of the Obstp.pctio.ns in the Savannah River.—' We had a call yesterday, from Mr. William Webster, of the firm of Pierce, Sanborn 4 C0.,0f Bos ton, who visitsonr city for the purpose of with the proper authorities for the removal dibiale obstructions and clearing out the ship channel of the Savannah river. The company Is the same who raised and removed the sunken ships In the harbor of SeiiaStapol, Russia, w hich so long defied the el icits of European contractors. They are supplied with ali the appliances necessary for the work, such a steam-tugs, docks, dredges, hydraulic Jacks, div ing bells and lanterns, uud Mr- Webster Is of the opinion that ail the obstructions in oui harbor can be successfully and speedily removed, and onr ship channel greatly improved. He 13 ready to make the necessary arrangements and proceed at once with the work, in which he will require the assistance of a considerable nuinlier of laborers. The vast lm portance o f the prompt and effectual removal of the obstructions in our harbor to the commercial inter ests of the city need not be urged, and we sincere ly hope that Mr. Webster’s company will be author ized to commence ihelr operations Immediately. With our georgraphicai position and our railroad connections with the Interior, ail that Is needed Is the clearing out of our ship channel to give Savan nah decided advantage over other Southern seaports. H. nousman—recov ery of premises. Upon Investigation of the matter In ontroversy. It ls apparent that the defendant occu pies the premises of Mrs. S.Hlrsch located in Guyton, Effingham County, with the approval of the owners, as shown by letters nr,d other evidence until the crop planted by defendant consisting of 'torn, peas and potatoes can be harvested. It was therefore ordered that the defendant hnvo authority to remain in possession of the said promises until the Ist day of December next, and give quiet uud peaceable pos session ou or before that date.
