For eight years'he has been laboring and suffering in that country and so soon as his health is restored expects to return. He was deprived of sup ples from this country by the war, (being a Mission at of the Southern Baptist Convention) and cut off from other Missionaries by wars In Africa. He says • i was 27 months at one time without seeing a white face at ail.” iioNSiEPB Toxson Come AOAIK.-»If we had lacked ,ther evidence of the corporeal presence of our old nelghbot and namesake, C. W. Thompson—or, •cider Wlnegar Thompson,” as Ills familiar friends sometimes call him, in signification or hfs business and to distinguishing him from the balance of the Thompson family—we say if we had had no other evidence of his return to us with the blessings of peace, the present of a fine fresh kit of salt Xo. l myktrei, from him yesterday, would have afforded us the most satisfactory and convincing proof of the fact. In acknowledgment ol this kindness we take pleasure In stating that the veritable “C. W. T.” Is at his old stand, next door to the Heealo office, where he is receiving his usuai miscellaneous stock oi family supplies, wines, liquors, bottled cider, ales, fie!;, ohioas, potatoes, etc., allot which ire will make known in due time through the columns of the Herald, Dastardly Outback.—As Mr. Jas. J. McGowan was returning to ills residence on Barnard street, night before last, he was accosted by two men clad a? soldiers, in St. James Square, who asked him for a chew of tobacco, which he told them he did not have, and proceeded on his way, After walking a lev. paces he was felled to the earth by a blow with a heavy weapon, supposed to be a stick ; the blow was repeated" a second and third time, when Mr. McGowan told them they ought to be ashamed to beat a one armed man without weapons wftli which to delend himself, and that If their object was money, he did not have any. They searched his pockets, and finding no money, "one oi them remarked that “he has no money, and we byd better clear out.” They find, leaving their victim almost senseless. AXOIEER ATTEMPT AT HIGHWAY ROBBERY.—Last evening about half-past eight o’clock as Mr. L. J. Stuart, of the firm of Stuart & Cos., grocers, was passing the comer of Harris and Drayton streets, he was suddenly struck from behind on the head with a heavy bludgeon of some kind which felled him to the ground. Though badly stunned by the blow he called for help, and as he rose from the ground saw a maa running up Drayton street some hundred yards off. Mr. Stuart Is of., the opinion that the ineawho struck him was concealed behind a tree as he paeeed, and that it was his Intention to commit a robbery, but was alarmed by the call for help. Had Air. S. been so completely stunned, as not to be able to cry out, no doubt the villain would have consum mated his purpose. . • The frequent occurrence of such attacks upon quiet citizens In our streets at night, is evidence that the city Is Infested with desperate characters, and should induce the utmost vigilance on the part of the police for theh- detection and punishment. If necessary, an extra patrol cl citizens should be organized to aid jld guarding the city. Citizens, too, should be on I "heir guard when in the streets after dark. THE COURTS. BEFORE LIEUT. COL. X. Doubt having been expressed as to (he ac curacy of the Toronto Globe’srrepcfrt of what General Grant said at Quebec about driving Maximilian from Mexico, that paper declares Its report was substantially correct. The Lieutenant General was reported to have said that he had sent a hundred thousand men to the Rio Grande, and that Mai. would have to leave Mexico, peaceably if he would, but forcibly if he refused. There is certainly a mistake somewhere, as not over thirty thou sand troops are in Texas, and an order has been issued .for the mustering out of a por tion of this force.— Natlmlk Pr**f- Hotel Arrival*. John has lost much of his old-time glory. But he ,said a good thing when he demand Lis nomination on the ground that “ there should be one true Democratic on the ticket somewhere.” Gen. Patrick is not now, and never was a Democrat. During his career of Provost Marshal General in the Department of Vir ginia, he was the originator of se feral mcas uras in favor of the freed people, and for the punishment of secessionists, which secured him the honor of unmeasured denunciation by the Copperhead press. Stealing Coiton —We are informed that in some of the adjoining counties of Alabama cotton is being stolen to an alarming extent. Besides much direct stealing, they whip the devil round the stump as follows: Some ras cally villain associates with himself a few of hisowa sort, and goes by night to w here cotton is stored and marks it C. S. He then goes to the military authorities, and making statement that he has found a lot of concealed Confederate States cotton, gets a large re ward for the information. Asa precaution, we would suggest to all Parties having cotton, to take responsible men, who have taken the oath, and get them to notice the marks on their cotton, so as to be able to swear to them in case of improper seizurp. —Rome Courier.
