Sir—A strong feeling exists among the
friends of the Confederate Slates of America
that it would be desirable to organize in Lou
don a Southern Independence Association,
with the object of diffusing information as
to the merits of the War in America, aud of
keeping before the minds of the British public
the policy and justice ot recognizing the iu
deocndeucc of the Confederate Stales at tbe
earliest possible moment.
As such an association must, in order to
lie successful, he composed of men of good
political, commercial and social standing, its
promoters desire, before taking further steps,
to invite the gentlemen whose names are en
closed, and among whom (sicin the original)
you will find your own, to form a provisional
committee.
All that is now requested of you is to agree
to join that provisional committee, condi
tional on not fewer than twelve of the ac
cotnpanying names ( sit iu the original' doiu.

mittee for organizing the association, holden
this day, the accompanying draft, constitu
tion and circular were considered, and it was
resolved to print anil circulate them among
the members of the Provisional Committee
for revision and consideration. You are
earnestly requested to attend an adjourned
meeting of the Committee, at this address,
on Saturday, the 12th instant, at one o’clock,
and to bring the papers with you, with such
corrections as may occur to you. If you are
unable to attend, you are requested to have
the kindness to communicate your sugges
tions to me previous to that date. Tbe com

SOUTHERN INDEPENDENCE ASSOCIATION.
1. An institution shall be founded in Lon- ;
don called the Southern Independence Asso- |
ciation, having for its object to diffuse infor- i
ination as to the merits of the war in Ameri- j
ca, and to keep before the mind of the British
public the policy and justice of recognizing, I
at the earliest possible moment, the indepen- j
dence ol the Confederate States.
2. It shall be governed by a committee, j
composed of the gentlemen whose names
are subjoined, with power to add to their •
number The committee shall have the en '
tire control of the tinauces and publications ;
of the Association, and shall elect a Chair
man. Vice Chairman, and one or more hon
orary Treasurers and Sectclaries, out of their
own number, and shall also have the power
of appointing paid officers.
3. AH persons desirous of becoming mem
bers of the association maybe elected by

sympathy with the objects of the association, j

4. General meetings of the association

The Defense of Wire.— The trial of Wirz !
is expected to last several weeks longer* |
i he examination of witnesses for the defense 1
proceeds slowly, the counsel taking care to i
thoroughly silt them all for the purpose it !
appears of establishing the following fae’t«
viz: that the conduct of the accused was
generally- humane; that be was sick an t
absent from Audersonville when many of the
alleged atrocities were committed; that he
was not responsible for vaccination which
resulted so badly; that he never maltreated
anybody nor acted wilfully and maliciously,
and that although the rules ol‘ the prison
-were stringent aud there was a lack of phy
sical comfort, the old .Dutch Captain, j,i 3
counsel calls him, was not responsible to the
extent contained in the charges. In » word,
that the evidence lor the government will
uot justify his conviction.
A subpoena for Gen It. E. Lee was sent off
thig morniug and it is expected that he wilt
arrive by the middle of next week. Gen
Howell Cobb, eX-Gov. Brown, three Geor
gia Senators, C. Johnston and Col. Roald,
are also summoned to appear as witnesses
