It wili be remembered that about a fortnight ago, a oolii highway robbery was committed on our streets ova party of New York roughs, just lauded Irom the 3teamor, upon the person of au Indiscreet young man irom tue interior, who had been a f.llow-p*.- -snger with them from New York. The thieres abused the confidence reposed in them by getting their victim drunk, and relieving him of his green i.acks by tuc process of gafrotlng,—one or two of ihem holding-him l>y the throat and arms, while the others rifled his pockets. They were promptly ar rested by a Lieutenant of the Police and on the llth ,11st. were arraigned for trial before Lieut. Col. M. i. Hoibrook, Provost Marshal, and the proof being positive, they were each fined in the sum of five hun dred dollars, or in delimit to be Imprisoned for the term of six months in the Penitentiary at Mllledge vlile. ... From this sentence an-appeal was taken to On. SteeJmau by defendants' couusel. After a careful examination of the case at Headquarters, the defend ants were ordered to be turned over to the civil auth ority. A warrant was issued by Justice Philip M. Hassell on Thursday last, and a special Justice’s Court was convened at the Court House. A thorough investigation of the testimony, occupying two days, was made, and it was ordered that the defendants be heldover to the next January Term of the Superior Court of Chatham county, to answer for the offence of larceny from the person ; and It was further ordered that the defendants be each required to enter good recognizance in the sum of three thousand dol lars. They failed to give the required recognizance for their appearance, and were remanded' to jail, col. A. W. stone'and M. Benedict E3qs., were the counsel for the defendants. arrival from Acgcsta—The River Falling.— river Memoranda.— The, steamer Hellea, Capt. Reilly, from Augusta, to Kein A Cos., with a heavy freight and a number of passengers, arrived yester - day morning. Cspt. Reilly reports that the river was falling fast when he left Augusta, at one o'clock F. M.., 20:li Inst. On Sand Bar .Ferry and Bar, there was scarcely three feet of water. The water at Hertchmun's Lake was very low, awl boats beiow the Lake conld not ascend the rlvef. Friday there was a heavy rain, but it had no effect on the liver. Passed steamerCafwell aground at Hungry Swamp; steamer Petit, tied up at Cooney Cut, awaiting a rise ; L. Enos at Twiggs’ Bar; on the 2lst passed steamer Mary nt Hirsts' Landing, Potter at obstructions, Gen. Berry, at Saxon's Lmding with wheel disabled ; steamer Oak, near Miller’s Lake ; Germany's cotton fiat sunk near Poor Robin ; on the 22J inst. steamer Volunteer, near Bold Maker,bound' up. Besides Germany's flat, six others were passed sunk and deserted. ’ A Disabled biEAHER Laid cf at Fig Island.— The steamer Annie, an ex-blockadc-ruuner, lies down she river at Tig island, where she was run ashore to prevent her slaking in deep water. The Annie started from Darien on Friday with a heavy load of cotton but when Just outside the Altamaha river, ran aloui cf something, (It 1- supposed to have been a sunken anchor,) which stove a hole in her iron bottom. The machinery of the steamer is not Injured. The Auuie is owned by her captain,Ciark, and was pur, chased of the Government at the recent sale of gov ernment vessels at Key West. She was built for the blockade running business and previous to capture by the U. S. cruisers off St. Thomas, had made seven teen successful trips between Nassau and WUmlng ton. arrival of Two Sew Errs* steamtim.— The light diaft steumeis Clarion and' Orient, In tended lor the river trade, nrrlved'from New York on Saturday, to Messrs. C. L. eolby & Cos. The Clarion Is a stcru wbeeler, draws three leet of water, and has excel lent accommodations ror passengers and freight— The Orient Is perhaps the most elegailt steamer on the river, being bran new, and built with special ref erence to the passenger trade. The Orient tjas visi ted on Saturday by great numbers of business men an Q others, who expressed the most favorable oplr. ions concerning her qualities. The Clarion is des tined lor the Augusta route, and tire Orlent.for the Altamaha route. The latter sailed for Doctortewn on Saturday afternoon. Btill Another New Steamer for Savannah.— The steamer Ella, Robbins-, from Charleston, arrived here yesterday afternoon, to'John R. Wilder, and will he used by him in the river and coast trade.— The Elia 13 a fine aide-wheel steamer of 300 tons. Tills makes the third steamer added to the Savannah trade yeoteday. The following is a list of the new acquisitions to our river and coast trade: Steamer Ella, Rollins, Chaleston, John R. Wilder, 300 tons, side-wheel ; steamer Clarion, Morse, Charleston, 9’ tons, stern-wheel, Charles L. Colby 4 Cos.; steamer Orient, stern-wheel, Goldsmith, Boston, Charles L. Colby & Cos. . Departure of Steamships.—Oil .Saturday morning last, the river and harbor presented an interesting scene, the sailing of live steamers. Messrs. Hunter and Gammell cleared for New York the steamer '.Zodiac, Capt. Bulkley ; for Philadelphia the steamer Cumbria, Capt. French. Messrs. Brigham, Baldwin & Cos., cleared the steamer Nevada, and John R. Wilder A Cos., cleared the steamer Oen. Sedgwick, for New York. Yesterday morning the steamer Perit, Capt. Delanoy, of Messrs, Hunter A-Gammell’s line called for New York. Capt. Lawrence La week.— ln the recent notice of the death of Capt. Lawler, master of the steamer Augusta, his name was not correetly given. At the request of numerous friends, we make the correction. We learn that Mr. Clark, engineer of the Augusta, lias repeatedly telegraphed Mrs. Law ler residing In New York city, but has failed to re ceive any reply. Re-arrest or a Jaii. breaker.— About the leth of June Inst, a notorious character named Ferguson, brake jail In this city, and has been at large ever since until abont ten days ago, when he was ar rested In Charleston. Detective Sawyer proceeded *o Charleston last week and secured and returned with Ferguson. Groceries, Wines, Liquors, Ac., at Auction.— Mr. Edwin E. Herts announces, under the auction head, a large sale of the above articles, which are enumerated In Ills advertisement, on Tuesday fore, noon, In front of Ills store. Valuable cargo.— Messrs. Hunter A Gammell on Saturday last cleared the schr. Mary, Capt. Kelly, for Boston, having a cargo of 616 bales upland cotton, 28 bales sea Island cotton; total, 641. This la a vefy large cargo for the size and tonnage of the vessel. Departure of the i73x> new York volunteers.— This flue regiment which has been on duty In our city for some time past, departed for home on the steam, ship Nevada, on Saturday morning last. The regi ment was In command of Col. Peck, and numbered 3} commissioned officers, and 254 enlisted men. South Carolina Sweet Oranges.—For several days past a large quantity of oranges, grown on St, Helana Island, South Carolina, have been offered for sale on the street. The fruit Is very sweet and lesriou= Labor Cargo or Cotton —The Enterprise Bat No. 11, arrived on Saturday from Augusta with 62a bales upland cotton. This Is the largest cargo yet received by flat-boats (Tom the Interior. Steamer Express.— The trial trip of this steamer which was to hare taken place on Saturday after noon, will come off to-day at half past ten o’clock. The Managers of the Episcopal Orphan Borne gratefully acknowledge their Indebtedness to the Gas Company for donations at coke and gas, and also for past favors. - f : School books —Messrs J. C. The United States by Policeman H. Otten vs. Plato Johnson, (colored)—peddling jewelry in the market without license. It having not been proven that the defendant sold any of the jewelry found in his pos session, but having been established that it was the property of his employer,it wa- ordered that the Jew elry be returned to its propel owner, and that the defendant be discharged from custody upon payment of costs Clilei of Police vs. Policeman H. Ths Theatre.—Another new piece Is produced at the Theatre this evening, such is the untiring energy of the management in their endeavor to present a constant succession of fresh attractions. The hew sensation Is ''Eustache Bauden, the Condemned,” a play of French origin, which is said to possess all the characteristics of the best dramas of that school, and to give ample scope to the powers of the principal artists of the company. Heayt Receh-ts of Cotton, Ac.—On Saturday aud yesterday the receipts of cotton by flats from Angfista were lifts bales Uplands, by steamer 246 do.; from Darien, by steamer, 1055 do. Total 3109 ; Sea Islaud9, 25 bales from Augusta, Darien, 30 do. Total 55 ; Domestics, from Augusta, 279 bales. Heavy Easterly Gale.—During the whole of yesterday a heavy easterly gale was blowing out side. The steamer Stsndlsh, Capt. Moore, bound for Hilton Head, after proceeding down the river to nearly opposite Fo.t Pulaski, was compelled to re turn, as It was impracticable to 'cross Calagbooga Sound.
