The canoulcus broke down just after leaving Charleston, and was compelled to return and Ue In side tUe bar ; and after the repairs had been made, a severe gale coiulug up, it was not deemed advisable to venture outside. This caused the delay lu the ai rlval of the Geueral. Tho Canoulcus left Charleston yesterday morning at about eight o’clock, and left Hiltou Head last evening at six. The stay of the General at Hilton Head was very short. At one o’clock this afternoon Gen. Howard will ad dress the Freedmeu at the Second African’ Baptist Ciiurch. . Thievish Extraordinary. What one Family Contributed to Destitute Freedjun.— Tuesday night last, the residence of Mis. M. A. Cohen, on Hull street, one doer east of the northeast corner of Hull and Barnard streets, was entered by house breakers and one of the cleanest pieces of work In the thieving Hue done, we have ever recorded. Un der the front stoop of the house Is the store-room where were kept all the provisions of the family and most of the silver-ware. To admit light from the street there Is a circular wludow let Into the brick walls of the stoop. This window was defended by several iron bars, by chiselling out two of which hum Hie brick work, the thieves were euabled to en ter the area-way under the stoop. They then re. moved the lower sash or the store-room window.— These difficult Jobs must have consumed some time. When fairly In the store-room, the burglars nndlug uu the shelves a quantity of randies, lighted three of them, placed them on different shelves and then cully commenced their pillage. They dellberatly emptied a keg of lard, cleaning the sides and bottom of the same ; emptied one whole barrel of salt pork tone quarter bairdf of flour ; took several pounds of adamantine candles; several full jars of preserves ; a large lot of tmffee; a quarter ofa barrel of rice ; several pounds oTblack pepper In jars; together with several small sacks of cakes, etc., etc. a > On one of the shelves was found the silver ware of the lady or the house, or more than Intrinsic value as heirlooms of the family. On another shelf was a boiled ham and some fresh bread, which the thelves took, together with several plates, and deliberately made a late supper off them on the pavement In front ofthe house: afterwards making offtvlth their spoil collected Into several sacks whichwere lying at hand m a corner of the store-loom. During the uight a policeman cams across four negroes carrying heavy loads, going lu the direction of the Central Railroad Depot. He hailed the negroes und they telling him they were going to the Depot i ordered them to halt. Wtiereu on two of the ue groes dropped their loads, consisting or the sweet cakes and a portion of the pork, nud ran. The re' raalulng two did not drop their loads but made off with them. The policeman gave chase but was un able to come up with the fugitives. Mrs. Cohen was robbed of the entire stock of family supplies, the thelves even taking away five doxeu of eggs. The total value of the articles stolen cannot be less than S7OO. AxOTBER DaltlNU UOBBEKY, ATTEMPT TO ILOWA SAFE cji'RN with Gunfowimir.—ou Tuesday night fast the store of Messrs. Shuster A liclolsus ou the north Bide or Bay afreet a few doors west of the Exchange, was entered by burglars. The door of tits storeroom on the river fronting on River Street, was Urat forced open. The burglars then passed up through tits other store-room under the arches, to get to the counting room which Is level with and itoutiug ou Bay street. They had by maiu force to throw off from the trap door a bale of cottotf which had been placed upou It so secure It. Entering the counting room, they carefully spread upon the floor a mill cient quantity of cotton, to koep. the safe from llu> door, aud then turned it over, the track of the safe resting ou the cottou thus bringing-the safe door upward. They next attempted with guupow. powder to blow open the safe door, which, however, they failed to do. They greatly injured the lock, -however. Had the burglars been successful In get ting sufficient powder Into the lock to explode the idoor, the report and Jar would hardly have been ■heard, as the cotton under It provlde&n complete non-conductor of sound. After finding that It was impossible to blow open the safe the burglars began to pillage. In the store-room, under the counting ro’diu, were stored several boxes of clothing, which they' opened, scattering the contents over the room. Nearl/ overy drawer tft'the various desk* was bro ken opetf, but nothing of value to them waa found- They, huH 'evtu', secured a fair bottles of Rhine wine, but desirlug' something more palatable, an attempt was made by the burglars to rako from the store room a barrel cl whiskey, genuine ‘Old flee tar.” It proved impossible for them to manage it, so they very considerakMy opened the front door on Bay at. and decamped. ADDRESS OF DR. AIASSIE TO THE FREEDMEN.-I.ast evening the Second African Baptist Church was tilled with with a largo audience gathered to listen to the address of James Wm. Massie, D. D. IX. D., or London* to the Freedtnen of this city. 4 large number of white people were also present whose attention was closely held by the remarks of Dr. Massie to the colored people.
