The storm can not but have been felt severely on the coast, but it is to t,e hoped not with flu -li serious results as the great stoat oi the latter part of last mom It. Chatham County Jail.—A recent visit to tho Jail by our reporter found that institution under good discipline, the cells and the intetior of the prison kept in thorongh police, the walls of the interior of the building whitewashed, and great care is taken with the health of the prisoners. Lieut. W. H. Lar r.tbee, of the 12th Maine Volunteers, detailed as Chief Jailor, is unceasing in the discharge of ltig du nes. Kvery prisouer is visited by him each day, and upon the earliest appearance of any contagious or epidemic disease within the walls of the jail, the case Is immediately removed The jail now contains 4S cells, besiuas debtor’s rooms, kitchens, etc. There were iu confinement here yesterday fifty-four pris oners, none for capital offences. The rations issued to the prisoners are always carefully examined, and must be free from any impurity whatever, such as would induce scoibutic diseases. A worthy assistant of Lt. Larrabee is Sergt \V. S. Berry, of the 12th Maine Volunteers, whose uniform faithfulness and kindness to the prisoners is highly appreciated by them. The Circus.—Owing to the rain storid last even lag. and which made the pavilion of the circus un‘ tenable, no performance was given, although suin’ dent numbers of peo|>le were turned away to have made quite a respectable house. The benefit to the Orphan Asylums takes place this afteruooon, and the circus should be crowded iu aid of this charitable enterprise. A correspondence between a large num ber of members ol the Convention, other prominent citizens of tlie Stale, among them Ex. Governor Grown, and tlie liou. Ciias. J. Jenliins, is published. The several letters to Judge Jenkins urge him accept the candidacy for Governor,on the ground that he commands the entire confidence ot the peo ple, and that his election would be attended with no partizan agitation. Mr. Jcukins in his reply says : “Georgia lias placed me iu a branch of public service more congenial to my tastes titan that which you ask me to seek. My present position more than fills the measure of my ambition ; but tbe kindness which bes towed its demands its abandonment for less congenial service Jf required. You are, therefore, at libertylo present my name as proposed. My antecedent connection with political affairs is well kuown to my feliow-citizens. Ido not think I- need now make to them a confession of faith. Indeed the fortunes of war, from which we are just emerging, have expunged some of the issues and greatly modified others, upon which the American people have heretofore been divided. An honest and intelligent review ot our past half cmttiry convicts us of two egregious errors : too great prone ness to agitation, and too nmcit division among ourselves. Further allusion to the past would be ouly paiuful. Let us heed all its rebukes and warnings, and honestly applying them to our present endeavor, with tlie aid of Divine Providence, to make lor ourselves a oetter future. Let us take anew departure from tlie great epoch of eighteen hundred and sixty five ; forgetting that we have been, ot have Known, Democrats or Whigs—have boasted ourselves Unionists or secessionists, as these terms indicate party di-visions and animosi ties ; and striking bands in renewed fellow ship, let us all faithfully perform our latest. Pledges of (ealty lo the American Union, and exert all our euerges iu rebuilding tbe w aste places and repairing tbe fallen iortuues ot our common Mother—good old Georgia. Should my fellow-citizens, more in kittd fiesstome than in justice to themselves, place me in her Executive chair, they shall see me, feebly it maybe, but faithfully la bonug to that end. If they delect in me aught of vindictiveness for past divisions, or !, Inscription lor honest opinion’s sake, let them all prescribe me. .Prostrate as we now arc, and gloomy as ur prospects may seem, let us not despair th , .‘Shier days.
