Pkmodicals.—We are indebted to Mr. Estill for the following weeklies: Tuk Nation —The number for the current week abounds in instructive reading. The critical department is particularly good. Among the books reviewed there is a valuable contribution to English history in the notice of “Fronde's History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Death of El zabeth.” The other most noticeable papers lu tin-department for sound cildcUm.iie that upon ML-a Bradilou. the popular Novelist, “Wilson's outlines of History,” aud “Palgraves Narratives of a year’s Journey through Central and Eastern Arabia.” Tiif. Bound Table.—The Issue or the 11th inst. con tains a very readable history of chess in the succes sive steps as indicate and in certain rythmical Hues, which are skillfully constructed. “Culinary Re form” would please the epicures. The Reviews, "The Gulistan, or Rose Garden,” conveys as faith ful a rciideriug of tile poetry of Saadi, the celebrated Pelsian Poet, as it is possible to accomplish by a not 100 literal trnuslatloii. The highest praise is awarded to the translator, Francis Glad win. Thepolitical portion of the Rouud table condenses hi an Intelligible abstract Uia chief points in the re cent diplomatic correspondence between Mr. Adams awl Earl Russell. The article entitled “The Rose Water Banquet” is a rather caustic notice of Hie feastings by which Sir Morton Peto ivas entertained ill his tour through those parts of the North and West which he and his party had visited. “Fouling our own Nest,” a poignant satire on the New York papers, for the representation through Police reports of American social liro aud manners. Frank Leslies’ illustrated Newspaper for the week ending Nov. 18, isoueof the best that lias yet been issued, whether regard is ha 1 to the readbig eon tents or illustrations which are particularly licit. All the above call be obtained at Estill’s Book Depot, Bull street, opposite the Pulaski House. Gentlemen’s Furnishing Goons.—We Invite the attention of country dealers aud of our city readers generally to the card of Mr. S. M. Coldtng, whole sale ami retail dealer In Boots and Shoes and Gen tlemen’.- Furnishing Goods lu another column. Mr.C keeps constaully on hand a well selected stock ol'all ai l ides 111 Ills line, of the latest styles and best quull i.v, which he will ’sell, wholesale or retail, at fair I rices. Give him a eali. New Yoiik Piano Fortes.—We call the attention of our readers to the advertisement of Mr. Ernest Cubler, in another column. His establishment la one oi the largest of the kind In this country, and with his m w factory now completed and in full opera tion, he Is enabled to furnish dealers and others promptly, as ordered, with any number of very ele gant ancl justly popular instruments. Arrival of the Zooiac.—The steamship Zodiac, Capt. Dearborn, from New York on the 11th., Satur day, arrived in yesterday. We are indebted to Capt. Dearborn and Parser Scranton far favors. For Baltimore.—Passengsrs and shippers will take notice that the steamship Fannie leaves lor Baltimore at four o’clock this afternoon. Latest from Mnlto. The correspondent of the New York Her ald writing from El Paso under date of 13th October, announces toe continuance of Presi dent Juarez and bis Cabinet in tbat city at that time. The Imperialists bad not yet ad vanced on Ei Paso from Chihuahua ; but it was thought that the President would soon leave there, going down the Rio Grande and joining the army of Gen. Escobedo in the States of Coabulla aud New Leon. By a re cently issued order of Generul McDowell, United States commander of the Department of California, our forces in that State and Arizona are ordered to prevent the transpor tation of arms or the movement of armed bodies of men across the frontier into Mexi co. This, the Mexican republicans com plain, is making a discrimination to their prejudice, since the shipment of arms from San Francisco by sea is permitted, thus al lowing the Imperialists, who hold the Mexi can Pacific coast, to receive supplies thence. Secretary Stantons Guard. —A Wash ington correspondent of the Cincinnati Com mercial writes: It is a singular fact that Secretary Stauton ctiunut so far recover from the belligerent at titude which so well b eanie him while we " ere at war, its to dismiss the military guard lrom Itis own private residence. Passing by No. 3”<i K street, yesterday, about noon day, I encountered a chap in blue regimentals and <hrl}' white gloves, strutting np and down in h'ouloftiie “palatial mansion” of the Secre ijiry of War, and in the alley iu the rear of Ine house was plainly audible the tramp, irainp, of another full armed patrol, who soiiti came into view with bayonet ou should er, keeping guard over his side of the lorti licaiiou. lsu't it remarkable, that while the torts around Washington uro being dismant le!, and Lieutenant General Grant comes and where unattended, the Secretary , war should require to be so Cousiautly hedged iu by bayonets? Our War Minister setuts to be the only mau in the country wlio can afford to keep a private battery ou Ihs premises.
