tu end declines —He is invited to name a friend
Mr. Raymond declines
The following correspondence, received by
us yeslerdity, is tull of interest, and we
ti ink exi-laiu* itself. The article in the New
Yo;k Times which caused the correspon
dence reads as follows :
FENIAN IMPOSTURE.
Hundreds and probably thousands of poor,
hone-t,
eopbisticated sectious of this country, have
been cajoled into making remittances to the
munageis of the Order heie and elsewhere—
n it one lithe of which, they may depend on
it, are used for any other purpose tl.an main
taining a art of seimps in idleness. Storks
com - to us of remittances of Pi-nian funds to
In land Most of these st ries are doubt
I'ss intended to allow that the contribution
received are actually expended lor some
revolutionary end. Even it an honest share
ot the tunds were sent to Ireland, the result
would apparently be merely to send a few
more ill-advised young people to jail. But
we do not believe that tbe money is used lor
any other purpose than getting notoriety
at and patent leather boo s for a set of idlers in
this country. It is really time that those who
are iu a position to advise this unsophisti
cated peoide in the rural disuicts as to the
real nature ot the Fenian swindle, should do
so. It is a crime to bolster up the concern
even as a joke. The clergy, on wimse min
istrations the Irish-Armricans chiefly de
pend, are probably' doing their beet to slop
the swindle. Buteverv one who wishes well
to Ireland and h< r people should lend a hand
in exposing what is reailv an unmitigated
imposture. —Tines Editor.a 1 , Nov. Mth.
MR. KILLIAN TO MK. RAYMOND.
Mr. Killian presents his compliments to
Mr. Riymond aud asks on behalf ot Colonel
John 0-Mahony, President ot the Fenian
organization, a retiaction from Mr. Ray
mond 1 all statements of a personal cuarac
ter embodied in an article entitled “The Fe
nian Imposture,” published in to-day’s
Times.
Mr. Killian will call on Mr. Raymond at
one P. >l., with a view of turthering his ob
ject.
New York, Nov. 14, 1885.
mr. Raymonds rli*lt.
The editor of the Times .acknow ledges the
receipt of Mr. Killian’s note. He begs to
say iu repiy that, as the article referred to
embodies merely an expression of opinion
concerning an organization of persons, lie
secs no ground for either demanding or
making a “retraction,” except upon submis
sion ot such facts as shall lead to a change
of such opinion.
The editor of the Times will be very hap
py to receive, consider and (if desired ) to
publish any such facts winch Mr. K. or any
one else may wish to submit to him.
Times Office, Nov. 14.
MU. KILLIAN TO MR. RAYMOND.
New York, Nov. 15, IBGS.
Mr. Killian has received aud read Mr. Ray -
mond’s reply to Mr. O’Maliony's application
lor a retraction of “statements of a personal
character, embodied iu the Feniau Impos
ture aitiele of yesterday's Times.” Mr. Kil
lian cannot agree with Mr. Raymond that
these statements aie “merely au expression
of opiuion concerning an orgauizatiou of
persons,” nor, if they were, Could lie regard
them otherwise than libelous, grossly offen
sive, and richly deseiviug of rebuke from
such “organized persons.” He sees iu them,
on the other nand, a plain aud pa'pable at
tempt to “individualize” the responsibility
of the “Feniau Imposture,” as Mr. Raymond
is pleased to term it—to charge “the mana
gers of the Order here and elsewhere" with
complicity in, and the management of, a
“swindle,” —in brief, to stigmatize them as
dangerous citizens and disreputable men,
prey ing on the credulity of their fellow
countrymen. The official “managers" of the
Order being, just at present, three executive
officers, now resident in New York, there is
no difficulty in making the application per
sonal to them—the difficulty iudeed seems to
consist in presumiug the expres-ion of opin
ion’’ could have had any other meaning. To
sare Mr. Raymond from further embarrass
ment on this head, he is re-pectfully in
formed that the three “managers,” whose
names I handed to him yesterday, may be
regarded in either an “individual” or “col
lective’’ ligut, but that each aud every one of
them consider Mr. O'Mahony’s demand lor
a “retraction” individually and co lecliveyl
pr 'per. just and fit to be insisted on.
Mr. Kiiiian caunot restrain bis expression
of astonishment at Mr. Raymond's allusion
to “such a submission of tacts as shall lead
to a change of opiuion in” Mr. Raymond.—
He considers bucU a proposition, made under
such circumstances, an aggravation of the
original insult, aud the very acme of imper
tinence in itself. Libels starting from igno
rance can have no warrant or opoiogy; the
very right of criticism depeuds ou a superior
knowledge of the subject matter criticized.
So lar from “submitting facts" to Mr. Ray
mond for the purpose of overcoming bis de
tective information, Mr. Killian has the
honor to renew the demand for a “rettac
lion,” not merely from a sense of justice to
the managers of tbe “Fenian Imposture,”
but with a well assured belief that the wise
liberty of public criticism, the dignity aud
u-etulness of the press, the sacred riches ot
private reputation, the more alluring rewards
of public ambition, are all deeply concerned
'in any effort U» guard our press from reck
lessness and our politics Irom incivism.—
Should Mr. Raymond tail to see the urgency
oi the retraction asked for, be is requested
to name some gentlemen with whom Mr.
O’Mabony and Mr. Kiiiian might enjoy a
m..re satisfactory acquaintance.
B. Doran Killian.
MR. RAYMOND S REFLY.’
_ Mr. Rkymond received Mr B. Doran Kil
lian’s note dated the 15th, late last evening.
Unless he misunderstands its closing para
graph, Mr. Killian presents to Mr. Raymond
the alternative of either making the “retrac
tion which Mr. Killian has demanded op
behalf of Mr. O Mahony, and himself, or of
considering himself invited to a hostile
meetuigvvith one or both of those gentle
men' Mr. Raymond is unwiliing to take
any action on the subject until more fully
assured ot the meaning of Mr. Killian's note
and the unusual phraseology which Mr Kil
lian has seen fit to adopt must be his excuse
for requesting him to inform him whether
has or has not correctly understood him.

Frequent complaints are made at this
office, alleging many and gross indignities
to be daily perpetrated by white children of
tliis city, upon the children of Freedmen,
while going to and from their schools, and
at other times and places. Such practices
must be stopped at once, otherwise measures
will be adopted for tneir vigorous suppres
sion.
While the children of Freedmen conduct
themselves iu a proper manner, they must
not be beaten, stoned, insulted, nor iu any
wise molested by reason of their color. The
