A Washwotoit Medal Pcbchased from Thb India**— Major-General John a San born, when In this city a tew days ago, sbowe'd us quite a relic of antiquity, wbtch he procured from an Indian chief, at the ooud eil at the mouth- of the Little Arkansas, and for which he gave a horse worth $125. It was a silver medal about six Inobes long and four inches wide, of an oval shape; on one side were the words in a circle ‘G. Wash ington President, to Young King,” with two , figures, one of an Indian with his tomahawk thrown on the ground, and in his band a pipe, banding it to the other figure, intended to represent a white prince with a crown on bis bead; at the bottom was the date 1789.- On the other side was a representation of a shield and eagle; in one otaw was a bunch of arrows, in tbe other a twig ; over the head oftbe eagle were-twelve stars and the words ‘‘United States of America,” but no motto. Everything about the medal showed its an cient origin; the letters were old fashioned, an l the representation of the eagle was un nffciral and awkward, euchpa-a boy would now draw—none of the life-like expreseioa that the eagle has on the coin now—evident ly work ot other days when engravingwas not in its present degree of perfection ; but seventy-six years make quite an improve ment by the meohanioul arts— Lavrmee Jour nal. 7th iiut. .. .. .. A Birmingham physiologist—one Dr. Ben nct—has started the theory that there are six senses instead of fire. ‘ ‘lf, ” says the doc tor, “two cubes gilded over to look alike, and made of the same temperature—the one lead, the other wood—be laid before a man, none of his five senses will tell him which is wood, which is lead. He must feel their weight; and it seems as if physiologists would have eventually to agree to all this— fog_g££»c_of_weight, the sixth sense.” fort Royal House, HILTON HEAD, S.
