Tht* Savannah Ualljr Herald. KKUNKHUt* MtYKMBKH i'.‘. I NOV 1 II K VAKHIUNN. Tile Modes—4 look.. L»r> ami BoimrU- Hl)lt of Wearing Ihr Hair CLOAJU. Basqoines and lire hall fitting paletot are the prevailing modes. With the long and close sleeve, they are warm, and suitable lor serviceable garuii ute. But we protest against them in velvet- That material, so regal in its richness, and declaring its costliness in every dusty inch, should have flowing outlines ami unbroken surfaces; otherwise, its shape con tradicts its suggestions, which are those ol amplitude, largeness, and luxurious ease.— The graceful circular, the French sacque, al ways ladylike and never unfashionable, or the Spanish mantilla, which our climate, however, makes undesirable in coldest weather, are the suitable shapes. The trim ming, sparingly used, should be lace, which, like the garment, is superb, dateless, and im perishable. The ephemeral gimps and crotchet ornaments, beautiful as they are, have no place upon velvet. These trim the pretty cloth cloaks charmingly, however, and are strong and serviceable. Plain, dark colors, and especially black, will be preferred foi Winter cloaks. Very large plaids are occa sionally seen, which are as ugly ns costly.—r White cloths in short sacques have been worn somewhat, but the color is utterly un suited to the street, or to church, and the shape to visiting or the opera. Very light, flue cloths, with spots or figures of black, or cdlors, are common, but not tasteful. V> hen made into sacqut s they are trimmed with worsted chenille fringe, with Yak fringe, and not seldom with gilt bands and tinsel cords and tassels. It is unnecessary to say that they are hideous. On dark cloth and velvet cloaks borders of fur will be worn. They give an appearance of warmth, which is quite attractive, but as it is an appearance only, and furs are this Winter very expen sive, the fashion will not be popular. The black Astrakhan, which, a9 a whim, was last Wintef successful, will be thU Winter worn to some extent both tn cloaks, mulls, and as a trimming. It costs sll a yard, and is too woolly to be really beautifnl. There is no change in the styles of opera cloaks since' we last noticed them. The circular and burnous are the popular shapes. BONNKTB, in crossing the Atlantic, have “suffered a sea change into something rich and strange moSt of those which glow like Autumn flow ers, as gorgeous, and alas! as tiny—in the show-cases, bearing the faintest resemblance to their Imperial aote-lypeand model. Either they are prettier than in the beginning, or, being established, have a claim to respect Certainly they seem less absurd than at first, tholigb on aesthetic grounds they are still indefensible. In Paris the pretty Fanchon bonnet is yet made for evening wear, with a dainty feather fringe hanging over the Greek curls or Empire coil. Here they have almost disappeared. The long vail is a success, as we foretold. We have seen them a yard and a half in length, “looking before and after.’ To be <le rigour. they must be entirely plain, almost unhemmed. The spangles, straw or naments and showy fastenings are a capital offense against good taste. Tinsel, crystal and heads are not yet ostracised from good society, as they should be, and bonnets, otherwise pretty, blush crimson in their strings to own them. Velvet is the favorite material for bonnets, and small, rich ostrich plumes are the most elegant decoration. —■■ Green is still the fashionable color par excel lence, but a rich shade of brown is much worn, and black is always iD vogue. All evening hats are not flights, hut paroxysms of fancy, and utterly indescribable. Tulh, crepe and velvet are the condil inns, bowevei, on which follow the accidents of lace, feath ers, flowers, fringe, ornaments, ribbons, shells, and straw. DRItSS GOODS present no novelties since our last notice. It is observable that rich materials sell more easily than poor ones. Heavy silks are much more sought for than the cheaper qualities, and, the expense of making and trimming considered, it is the wiser economy. modes. . •, The Circle of the hoop seems typical of its immortality, and its position is unshaken. Dress skirts are full, generally gored, and very long—the richest being a little orna mented. Os 18 very elegant robes sent from Paris to a bride, only four were trimmed on the skift, and they very simply, though richly, with flounces of the same, or black lace. The round, high waist is the favorite. The square, or Pompadour corsage, is stylish, and on a fine figuro very effective. Jackets and basques in silk, cloth and velvet are both fashionable and comfortable. Bright colored cashmere, or merino breakfaßt jack ets, are pretty and jaunty. The coat sleeve, very small at the wrist, plaiu, and almost without trimming, is the most fashionable. It is rumored, however, that the vast, liaug iug sleeve waits just outside the portal of Fashion, and is sure of recognition next month. We hope not. It belonged to a past order of .things, when pages on bended knee waited on luxurious and indolent mis tresses—not to-day, when the wearer must serve at table the dinner which perchance she was forced to superintend in cooking, and expose the voluminous sleeve to mortifi cation among the vegetables and gravy. PETTICOATS of quilted silk, warm and pretty, will be worn on the promenade in place ot the fanci ful colored skirts. Fk)r dirty weatiier, of course, the thick woolen Balmoral is indis pensable. Rich as is the wardrobe of the luxurious Eugene, nothing therein ia more noticeable than her abundance of cbeup colored petticoats. We have seen in shop windows not less than twenty-one of these, ot varying ugliness, but each and all irre deemably tasteless and tawdry, and each and all certified lo be ‘ as worn by the Em press Eugenie.” This perverted acquisitive ness among faculties otherwise normal, most give her friends serious uneasiness. HAIB. Watertalls, dear to the heart of American women, are not banished, but their tenure is insecure. The thick coil of the Empire pdfiod is pi cier red, and, to most heads, is much more becoming. High rolls are exiled by higher Fashion, albeit they impertinently appear here and there. Braids across the forehead, short Aspasia curls and frizzes, are popular. lacks, lingerie, head-dresses, buttons, ornaments pertmnes, and other appurtenances of the toilet, demand to say so much of themselves that they most wait entirely for a more coo venient season.— y*m York Ti-ibune Uswn mso to Makb Contracts —We hear on all sides of the unwillingness of „»»„,ea to make contracts tor hiring after the tir’ of January. "Those prudent gentlemen who hold stock in the Academy ot Music, and who always stay at borne wheu an opera is repeated, when it rains, or wheu an election is going on, have had au easy time ot it lately. The danger of getting wet on one or two evenings ot last week—to say nothing ot the first cause—com bined with the prospect of being knocked ou the head by a wild and unregistered Irishman on the off-nights, liavo combined effectually to keep them to their quarters. A good many vacant chairs have in consequence excited the cupidity of that class who pay to stand, hut accept with cheerful composure any cotu fortablo seat that may he vacant, and who demand of the rightful owner, should he make his appearance, if he have a check. When any ouc takes my seat, itlfhe be reasonably good-looking, I prefer that he retain it to resortiug to the terrible alternative of put ting him out. The look of iujured innocence with which an interloper regards you, is too overwhelming and crushing to be borne with complacency. There was no great need to quarrel on this subject last .Saturday when the Philharmonic Society gave its first grand concert of the present season, inaugurating the twenty fourth year of its existence. The sky wept piteously ; the wind behaved shamefully ; the fiddlers rosined their bows gloomilv ; the President and Secretary of the Society exchanged scowls wrathfully ; the gas mau neglected to light up the extra* lamps inde pendently, and the oqly person who exhibit ed a tboughtlessDeas amounting to levity was the boy with the umbrellas. There were plenty ot seats to be had. People of a lively and itinerant disposition wandered about the nouse trying the cushions for mere pastime— as it they intend to buy some. The gltiom was “grand, epic, homicidal." ” Tom Savers.—The noted English pugilist, Tom Sayers, whose death in England has been announced, was a bricklayer by trade, aoo entered the prize ring in 1849, and since that date has appeared in a number of fights, generally coming out flic victor. Ou .the 17th of April, 18(10, occurred his ftrtnous fight with Heenan, which resulted in award ing a champion belt to each of the combat ants, as it could not be decided which was the better man. Since that event Sayers lias been profiting by the notoriety it invested him with, by appearing in circusses in spar ring matches He also was interested in a public bouse—the haven of all superanuafed “sports" in England. Sayers was certainly very popular iu England, and among his pro fessed admirers were not only the rougher classes who, in this country are interested in prize fighting, but such men as the late Lord Prlmerston. who thought him “a brave fel low." —The lorce of workmen in the navy yards is being greatly reduced.
