- The Baby Soldier.
Another little private
Mustered in
The army of tempation
And of sin.
Another soldier arming
For the strife.
To light the toilsome battles
Os a life.
Another little sentry
Who will stand
On guard, while evils prowl
On every hand.
Lord, onr little darling
Guide and save,
' ’Mid the perils of the inarch
To the grave !
The Fenians, having deposed their first
President, Col. John O'Mabony for per
fidy and malfeasance of office, called to
office and inaugurated on the 10th, the Vice
President W. R. Roberts, as President of the
Fenian Brotherhood. The new President
has issued an address which is attracting
considerable attention. He takes the sensi
ble view that Erin is not to be freed “from
the {vampire which remains on Irish soil con
suming the substance and crushing the lib
erties of the Irish people,” by newspaper
discussions and high-sounding mysterious
proclamations. President. Roberts an
nounces that the time has come for action.
“Our means, our energies, our whole
thoughts must be directed towards the mil
itary arm of the Fenian Brotherhood,
through which at once, we can accomplish
the freedom of Ireland.
Our common and implacable foe imagines
that w 4 may be destroyed by internal dis
sension.”
But the Fenian Brotherhood will show
the world that it can reform the abuse in its
midst without destroying power or retarding
the movement. The late difficulties will
strengthen the organization and be the
means of purifying it from much that was
erroneous in its tendency, and highly detri
mental to the cause.” TtSe determination
with which the new President is bent on do
ing bloody work, is evinced in the following
paragraph from bis inaugural .-
“Action, action, must, therefore, be the
order of the day. The funds contributed by
the patriotic, toiling masses of the Irishmen
of America must not be squandered or turned
into other channels than those for which
they were intended. The Irish <people in
America are ready to give millions for war,
but not one dollar as a tribute to drones or
adventurers. We must have some other tro
phies to show for our high sounding profes
sions than a few old rusty muskets, lodged in
a garret, as the voluntary offerings of patrio
tic men. Time, circumstances and the Al
mighty seem to favor the present movement
for~the overthrow of that despotic and brutal
power who has left desolation on the track of
her friendships and misery as the legacy of
her slaves.”
A mysterious hint is thrown out that Ste
phens, (who lately escaped firom a British
dungeon is expected to arrive in this coun
try shortly. Altogether, matters apper to be
drawing to a crisis with Feuianism.
Queen Victobia and Louis Napoleon. —
When Napoleon was living in the Elysee, it
was not so very long back that Queen Vic
toria hud said one evening at the opera to a
Prince of her acquaintance, “YW tu voir te<
deux plus grand coquins du inanck f regards done
eette loge .” In the box to which the Queen
called her cousin’s attention was the expelled
Duke of Brunswick and Louis Napoleon,
who, in those days, were intimate friends.—
Napoleon IH. certainly had no idea of the
flattering title which Victoriaonce gave him.
Did she remember “te plus grand coquin du
7wmdt," when she stood facing the Emperor
at Cherbourg ? He does not know, eitlier
that the Queen fell into a hysterical fit after
he had dared to kiss her cheek upon her re
ception at Cherbourg ? The Queen could not
get over this kiss from so detested a man for
a long time. No one, except, perhaps, the
Duke ot Modena, hates Napoleon so deeply
as our Queen. — Napoleon 111. and his Court by

The Lumber Business. —We hsre been
pleased to learn through a gentle man, who
is in a position to be well informed on such
matters, that this important source of pros
perity to our city and State, is, to use a com
mon phrase, looking up. The demand is
good, while the supply remains rather limit
ed ; but the encouragement given to the lat
ter is so strong as to stimulate the enterprise
necessary to produce it in sufficient quanti
ties. Between the Suwannee and this city
there are seven steam saw mills erected and
being erected, beside the mills already in
operation in Jacksonville and those being
built, for the manufacture of lumber. The
increased facilities tor transportation which
we learn are soon to be afforded on the F. A.
AG. C. Railroad, will be the means ot in
troducing an increased supply into the city,
Ml thus cheapen the article to a point that
Will stimulate importance to its exportation.
