Excitement in Philadelphia—A Negro
Riot There.—About seven o’clock yesterday
morning a disturbance occurred in the neigh
bond ot Seventh and Lombard streets, be
tween whites and tilacks, which for a time,
looked as If it would end in a serious riot.
The commencement of the affair was be
tween a black woman and a white boy. The
woman was drunk, and was on the sidewalk
yelling murder. The boy came along in
company with several others, and said he
would give her something to yell about, and,
with that, struck her a blow. A lot of
drunken negroes who were standing on the
corner of St. Mary street, rushed to the as
sistance of their sister, and in less than live
minutes the crowd had increased to about
800 blacks and less than 100 whites. The
majority of the negioes were clothed in U.
S. uniforms, and belonged to a regiment that
arrived here on Saturday. A geneial riot
ensued. Bricks and stones were freely used,
and a number of pistols fired. The police,
in large squads, arrived ou the ground and
arrested some twenty of the rioters.
Tnis had the effect of quelling the fight
One negro was arrested with a loaded mus
ket in hi* hand. Numerous cut heads and
injuries were received, but none proved of a
serious character. Officer Ferguson, of the
Filth Ward, was rather badly hurt by being
struck with a brick. During the whole of
yesterday, and up to a late hour last evening,
consiuerable excitement prevailed. A strong
police force remained up to midnight, and
prevented any further outbreak. As soon
as the riot was stopped, the police went to
work and closed some twelve or fifteen grog
geries in the neighborhood.— Philadelphia

A Queer Bigamy Case.— ln tbe New Bed
ford Police Court, Monday, Mary E. Haskell,
a girl only iiiteen years old, was complained
of by her sister for bigamy, having been
married to one Ira Haskins in October last,
while her former husband, Charles J. Has
kell, was living. For the defence it was
claimed that respondent having been married
at the age of thirteen years, without the
consent ot her mother, who is her only sur
viving parent, and having been separated
lrom Haskell by his being incarcerated in
the State Prison, and having no intention to
live again with him, that marriage was void,
rise testimony for the prosecution showed,
however, that she had expressed an inten
tion to live with Haskell alter his term of
imprisonment should expire. The court said
that the reports hold that a female of twelve
years is of legal age to consent to her own
marriage, and respondent was ordered to
give. *.ioo bail for her appearance at the
superior Court at Taunton in March. The
compiainant in the above case is married to
the brother ot her sister’s first husband, both
of whom were sent to the State Prison last

Lees Sirreno Eß Premeditated.— The
following passage is f rom the forthcoming
volume of Pollaid's Southern history of “The
Fourth Year of the War-." *
“There can be no doubt in history that
General Lee, in taking his army awav from
Richmond and Petersburg, hj decided, in
his own mind, upon the hopelessness of the
war, ami bad predetermined its surrender
The most striking proof of this " that on
his retreat there was no order published
against straggling—a thing unprecedented
in a:l deliberate and strategic retreats—and
nothing whatever done to maintain disci
pline. The men were not animated by the
style of general orders usual on such occa
sions. They straggled end deserted almost
ut will. An idea ran through the Virginia
troops ibai with the abandonment of Rich
uiond the war was hupeleM, and that they
would be jus'.ilied lu refusing to fight outside
the limits ot their Stale. Nothing was done to
check the notorious circulation of title notion
In the army. The Virginia troops soattern!

roul*. We luve seen that hckeii was left
With only a hsndlul of u ,s U . Home of the

over, and that they had better go home and

let him remain over night.
At the usual hour ol retiring, the strangt-i
proceeded up stairs to bed. Late in the night
be was aroused by the lady of the house,
who told him that there were three or lour
person* trying to break into the house, and
she believed they were robbers, who had
come there for the punrose of trying to roll
her of her money
The strauger arose, seized his pistol, anti
told her to go down stairs and open the door
and gel behind the door as she opened it,
aud he Would defend her. Placing himself
so that he could distinctly see by the light ot
tiie door when any one entered, he gave the
word, the lady opened the door, and In rush
ed a man, who no sooner placed his foot on
the door sill than he fell dead from a bullet
from the stranger's pistol.
A second man rushed in and fell dead by
the second shot. The third appeared, was
severely wounded by the third shot, and
turned and run off, leaving a trace of blood
behind him.
The men who had been killed were black

with horror he- own son-in-law as one of the
men, and the other was a near neighbor and
friend. ■
It was lieheved that the wounded man was
her own son. We did not learn the names
of the parties killed, nor that of the stranger,
who so providentially appeared to save the
old lady, her money, and perhaps her life.—

An Ancient Mine Discovered in Spain.—
The Paris Presse contains the following state
ments ; “Miners who work in the Spanish
silver mine known as the ‘white pebble pH,’
belonging for a long time to the Orfila fami
ly, have just made a discovery which is alike
interesting to art and arcbteology. Whilst
digging their subterranean walks they sud
denly found themselves In passages whose
origin dates from the remotest centuries.— ''
They further discovered a thorough and
scientific system of mining, the implements
being in such a good state of preservation
that it could be determined that it was not a
Roman, but a C’artbagenian or Phieniciau
mine. The hatchets, sieves for ore, but
particularly a smelting-furnace and two
anvils, excite the interest of engineers in the
highest degree. All these articles were care
fully collected, and will enable scientific ex
aminations to be prosecuted with greater
exactitude than was possible after a merely
superficial view." w
Attack by a Doq —A most painful affair
occurred iu a variety More, in Bbffato re
cently. A lady named Torrance, accompa
nied by a little daughter aged about three
years, had entered the store for the purpose
of making some purebaaes, and were stand
ing near the front' door, when a medium
sized cur dog, supposed to belong to some
of the customers in the store, attempted to
pass between the mother and the child. The
little girl being afraid, shrank back, when the
animal jumped upon her, burying his tushes
iu her face, aud inflicting very painful
woimds in the cheek immediately beneath
the eyes, and in the lip. The animal was
immediately killed, and a physician dressed
the wounds of the child
—At a Thanksgiving in York, Me., four
generations were present; the grandfather
being eighty-two years old, weighing only
seventy-two pounds, having no gray hairs,
and carrying on the work of his farm alone.
His wiie weighs two, hundred and twenty
five pounds, and one of the sous is six feet
