Th* Theatre—Testa.—The “Wrecker's Daugh
ter,” with Mias Kauuie Price as ‘'Marian,” drew out
a Tull bouse on Saturday evening, notwithstanding
the severely cold weather, which Indeed seems to
have had but little effect towards the diminution of
the audiences throughout the attractive series of per
formances which have been given during Mi»3 Price’s
season. The great success of this gifted young ac
tress, we feel bound to hint, has been favored in no
arnaU degree by the cheerful and painstaking man
ner In which she has been supported by the ef
forts of the excellent stock company of the thea
tre. We venture to say that not everywhere lu
her “starring” travelslias site found inwrpeters of
the subordinate characters of her dramas of equal
ability with Messrs. F. L. Wise, M. M. Loud, D. H.
Brown, Mrs. Boswell, Miss Cameron, Hu., Ac. As for
Mr. Raymond, Miss Price evidently appreciates and
enjoys his unsurpassed comicality as much as any of
the audience, a determination uot to allow the In
terest to flag which has prevailed daring the past
week ia evinced in the production of the new and
thrilling prize drama, “Vesta,” written expresaly for
Mis- Price, and of which we And the following com
mendatory notice from the Nashville Press :
“As the heroine, ’Vesta,' she Is trtily great. In
the first act she appears the young girl, full of hope
and Joy before her light-hearted companions ; yet,
beneath an exterior joy ousness there lurks a feeling
and sense of despondency which the gay surronnd-
lngs cannot dispel. With what art she dlagnUes her
feelings before the happy throng, and how beauti-
fullyand feelingly she portraysto her young friend the
lights and shades of her beloved profession, one made
Immortal by a bhake.-peare, a Schiller and a Mollere.
A change of act aud we see her as a true wife, loving
daughter and devoted mother. How true to nature
abe Ls, when, on discovering her long lost father, and
finding him a supposed criminal, fieelng from Justice,
and wrongfully accused, she turns to uim with the
fond womanly Instincts and holy love of a daughter,
offering her weak arms as a shield for the author of
her being.
With what a fullness of conception she portrayed
a true wife, man’s greatest joy and blessing, more
difficult lu her case, having for a mate a brute in
human form, a monster devoid of feeling and un
principled to the lowest degree. How the mother
slione In her at the thought of danger to her absent
child, aud with what earnestueas she pleaded for her
retain. Willi transcendent beauty she stood In
bold relief against the great wron; done her,
then sinking with vyoman's tenderness aud
love on her bended knees, and crawling In the dust,
with faltering voice and streaming eyes pleads with
the unnatural father “for her darling—her only one.”
It would be almost difficult to conceive a finer piece
of acting than that of this scene ; yet In the last act
she outshone. If ’twere possible, all previous efforts,
where, smarting to avenge the violent end of the
father of her child, (brute as he was,) she makes the
astouudiug discovery that by the baud of her only
parent he met. his death. Then In her breast arises
a desire to save, and with heroic firmness she re
solves to sacrifice herself on the altar of filial duty,
and falling lu this she sinks with broken heart in
the arms of death, made doubly welcome by the
loss of kindred and ties most dear.
In “Vesta” Miss Price has proved herself a most
admirable delineator of the deeper passions. She
is all that the author could wish, aud we advise all
lovers of the drama, In lls purity uot to miss an
opportunityof seeing It.
The Last Chance.— Ou Friday and Saturday
nightsSt.Audrew's Hall was filled .with our bpst citi
zens, to witness the queer quaint and quizzical do
ing i of Prof. J. M. Searl, the noted prestidigitator
anti ventriloquist. Ue amused aud mystified ull with
a success scldnmjattalned. The polite, neat and cap
tivating style of Prof. S. iu the rendering of his ef
fects makes ail feel at home. Those Chinese rings
are really beyond comprehension, aud the way he
produces eggs from au empty sack is a caution to
huxters and poulty dealers. In fact wc cannot par-
tieularize where all was so acceptable. His veurill-
oqual Illustrations brought dow n the house with mer
ited applause. To-night ls his last appearance, and
we say to lovers of really refined amusement to go
and eujoy a hearty laugh. The admission has been
reduced to only one dollar for front seats, and half
price for the little ones. Miss Ada appears to night
in her feature of second sight or spiritualistic vision.
The Professor introduces several new series of pleas
ing experiments. *

Attempt at Arson.—On Friday uiglit last,
between eleven aud twelve o’clock, a daring
attempt at arson was made on the out-build
ing or kitchen of the premises ot Mr. James
Roach, Southwest corner of Whitaker and
York streets. A ball ot puuk or some other
combustible matter was lighted aud thrown
on the shingle roof, where it soon ignited the
wood, but its timely discovery by a seryant
of Mr. Roach, prevented further progress of
the fire, it being promptly extinguished.
The buildings in the neighborhood are most
ly wooden, and n careful walch should be

The Chain Gang —Judges O’Byrne and
Bardwell, cf the Freedmen’s Court, have
adopted a punishment which it is hoped will
have a good effect in deteiring freedmen
from the commission of crime. Under the
new regulation the crime for the commission
of which the offender is sentenced to work
on the streets with a ball and chain is stated
on a placard which is fastened on his back,
where it may be read by ali passers by. It
is to lie hoped that this mode of punishment
will have the desired effect in restraining the
viciously inclined. *
