Further Internal Improvements. From
a friend we learn that, on the line of the Cen
tral Railroad, between Stations 3 and 4, Mr.
Me A! pin has erected a sawmill, which is now
in operation. In the immediate vicinity of
the McAlpin mill, Mr. J. J. Brewer has also a
sawmill in operation. Messrs. Roberison &
Stone, at 3 12; Mr. Geo. W. Fay, and Ed
wards & Smith, at Station No. 4, have in
process of erection three sawmills. The mill9
mentioned above, five in number;'are all first
class circular mills; the last three ’named
will be compleied in about thirty days. On

diotu eighteen sawmills are iu operation,

We are piea-ed to learn that our fellow citi

as the denominations of the notes are large it

It is only a wonder that more robberies do
sot take place, owing to the dark condition
of our streets, particularly late at night, as the
trees aud other hiding places with which our
city abounds iu conjunction with a want of
proper light furnish excellent opportunities
for these depredations.
Arrest of Thieves.—Two men named
Mark Brannan and John Sullivan went to
the store of Bocky & Co., corner of Bryan
and Barnard streets, and while one of the
party was looking a' a pair of sailor’s pants
the other man helped himself to a coat worth
$1U. The alteutiou of the clerk in showing

coat. He was committed by Justice Hart-

Vbrk, aud was immediately put up to leave

pany now running the Lizzie Baker, with
which steamer she will form a permanent
line between Savannah and Florida. The
Sylvan Shore is a fine side-wheel steamer,
elegantly fitted up for passengers, and is
probably one of the fastest boats in these
wafers. She has recently received new
boilers, aud has otherwise been fitted up ex
pressly for this enterprise. Her master,

The Theatre.—Miss Price's benefit last
night was an ovation of which that young
lady has just right to be proud, the audience
being one of the largest and most fash
ionable of the season ; but what must have
been even more gratifying to her was the
unanimous and enthusiastic manifestations
of favorable appreciation which greeted
her in almost every scene, especially at the
dose of the fourth act of ‘-Leah,” when 3be
was forced to acknowledge the compliment
by appearing before the-curtain. Miss Price’s
first engagement on our boards ha9 been ex
ceedingly successful. She has established her
self as a most decided favorite with our pub
lic. She bears with her in her professional
wanderings the best wishes of numerous
stranger friends and admirers, whoWill anti
cipate her return amongst us with
pleasure. At the close of the first piece
last night, Mr. Hanchett made a very liaud-
some address to the audience in her behalf.
To-night we have “Richard III,” with
Mr. and Mrs. Crisp in the leading characters.
Schooner on Fire—The schooner Mes
senger, Captain Holding, loaded with lime,
arrived at this port ou yesterday. On the
7th inst. the Messenger took fire, and her
batches, &c., were immediately battened.
Capiaiu Holding is of opinion that the fire
has been smothered.’ The captain and crew
have, since the 7th inst.,remained on deck, all
access to the cabiB and their clothing, pro
visions, &c., having been securely sealed,
with a view to save the vessel and her cargo.
Pork.—In consequence of the extreme cold
weather farmers have slaughtered a large
number of hogs and dressed them for the
marke*. At the opening of the week 25
cents per pound was the price demanded for
hogs, by the lot, but yesterday morning their
ideas bad gone down as the mercury rose in
the thermometer, and sales were made at 15
to 18 cents per pound, by the lot.
Fish.—The market the past few days has
been abundantly supplied with every de
scription of fish. We notice that there was
quite a demand from the interior cities.

REMARKS.
OFFICE OF THE HERALD.
SAVANNA# Jan. 12, 1868.
A stringent money market continues. ^Bankers
and Brokers limit their discounts to first class paper,
and all operations are nominal. Toe gold market
has lieavtljr declined in consequence of the New York
market being in an unsettled condition and also
heavily declined. The buying rates for gold to-day
were 39 to 40 per cent, premium, selling at 42a44 per
cent, premium.. Silver, buying rate 35 per cent, pre
mium, selling at 40 per cent.'premlum.
Cotton—The enquiry continues good; concessions
in prices are asked, but in very few instances granted.
Holders are asking same prices, and when not able
to get them will not sell. We do not think the last
Liverpool and New York accounts will .affect this
market materially. We continue quotations:

Superior Coui.t.—The Orand Jury yesterday
brought in the following true bill:
State vs. Louisa Prank—Perjury.
No cases have as yet been brought before the Petit
Jury, preliminaries not having been folly completed.
His Honor, Judge Fleming, announced yesterday
however, that the criminal docket would be taken
up on Monday, and that all cases thereafter called
would be disposed of. Many of the cases upon the
old docket, with the exception of those involving
capital offences, will have to be passed over for the
present at least, the documents relating to them hav
ing been destroyed or lost upon the occupation of the
city by the Federal forces.

Brandy $3 to $10 per gallon, by case, $30 to 36. Egg
Nogg $15 per case.
Freights—A continued dullness exists in all de
scriptions of freights. Timber freights to Europe are
nominal at 37-8d per load of 600 feet, In consequence
of very light receipts. We quote cotton to New York
iu steamers, at \c per lb ; to Baltimore, In steam
ers, at $1 per bale ; to Liverpool, In sailing vessels,
at )4d to l-16d. Timber to Nsrthem ports $12al3
per 1,000 feet. Lumber to Northern ports at $10al2
per 1,000 feet.
