From a friend we learn that, on the line of the Cen tral Railroad, between Stations 3 and 4, Mr. Me A! pin has erected a sawmill, which is now in operation. In the immediate vicinity of the McAlpin mill, Mr. J. J. Brewer has also a sawmill in operation. Messrs. Roberison & Stone, at 3 12; Mr. Geo. W. Fay, and Ed wards & Smith, at Station No. 4, have in process of erection three sawmills. The mill9 mentioned above, five in number;'are all first class circular mills; the last three ’named will be compleied in about thirty days. On u,e line of the Atlantic upd Gulf Railroad diotu eighteen sawmills are iu operation, t hese raids all have attached to them grist mi'ls, tor the grinding of corn meal, etc., for ,;, e neighboring settlements. We observe ihat nearly every steamer and sail vessel ar rivin''' fiotn Northern ports have, as a por tion ol tiieir freight, mill machinery, either lestined lor Georgia, Florida, or the States adjacent to the ’ Empire State of the South.” We are piea-ed to learn that our fellow citi zen. Col. George A. Gordon, has embarked largely in the limber and lumber business on Urn coast, where he ha9 two sawmills in ..pent!ion. Success attend all who are di- reetintr i heir efforts to the development of the resources ol our noble old State Damns Robbery.—Last eveui man was set upon in the neigl^l the depot, but a few squares fri residence, and garroted after the filbst ap proved New York iashion. The ruffian or ruffians seized him flora behind, at the same time administering chlorolorm which soon rendered him insensible, afier which they Mole Irom him the sum of six thousand dol lars. The money was contained in a belt «m his person, and the thieves evidently must have known something of the gentleman's Habits, as there was other money and valu ables on his person which was not moleBted. The money taken consisted ol nine $500 in terest bearing notes and fifteen SlOOTreasuty .notes. The gentleman desires us to offer a reward of three thousand dollars for the money, and as the denominations of the notes are large it is hoped the thieves may be speedily de serted and brought to justice. It is only a wonder that more robberies do sot take place, owing to the dark condition of our streets, particularly late at night, as the trees aud other hiding places with which our city abounds iu conjunction with a want of proper light furnish excellent opportunities for these depredations. Arrest of Thieves.—Two men named Mark Brannan and John Sullivan went to the store of Bocky & Co., corner of Bryan and Barnard streets, and while one of the party was looking a' a pair of sailor’s pants the other man helped himself to a coat worth $1U. The alteutiou of the clerk in showing uiiuis was to allow the other thief to steal the coat. He was committed by Justice Hart- A young man named William Hutchinson, with half dozen aliases, boarded at Mrs. Louisa Haynes’, at the corner of West Broad and St. Julian street. During the day or night he entered the rooms of O'Neil R. Twitched, B- S. Howes, S. F- Beckford, T. M. Taylor, aud stole their wearing apparel; then entered the room of Mrs. Haynes and stole her jewelry and dresses. A portion of the goods were recovered, und Justice Hart committed him. From Augusta.-—The steamer Swan, Capt. M. I. Cohen, arrived last evening, having a full freight of cotton. Upon the evacuation of Savaunah the Swan, which is an iron hull boat, built by Harlin & Hollingsworth, WHmingtbn, Delaware, tor the planters on the Savannah river, was destroyed by the Contedeiates The owners raised the hpll aud have made the Swan a new steamer, and she Jiow rates A No. 1 as a passenger and freight steamer. The Swan has new beams, decks, engines and upper works ; her cabins jic iimmlied. to Volunteer; the Amazon arrived there at 5 A. M. May, bound down, was tied up at Bull Pen, with her wheel broken. A New Steamer for the Florida Rocte. —Thesteamer Sylvan Shore, Captain James fucker, arrived here last evening, from New Vbrk, aud was immediately put up to leave lor Florida- She was purchased by the com pany now running the Lizzie Baker, with which steamer she will form a permanent line between Savannah and Florida. The Sylvan Shore is a fine side-wheel steamer, elegantly fitted up for passengers, and is probably one of the fastest boats in these wafers. She has recently received new boilers, aud has otherwise been fitted up ex pressly for this enterprise. Her master, Oapt. Jas. Tucker, is well known as an ex- jierienced navigator of the inland passage to Florida, and uudei hh command tde Sylvan Shore cannot fail to become equally popular with her consort, the Lizzie Baker. Paymaster for Florida —-Major T. J. Saunders, Paymaster, U. S. A-, has just re turned to Savannah irom Augusta, where he has been engaged in payiug ofi the 136th U. S. C. T., recently mustered out. Major S. has in charge payments iu Florida, and the probability is, he will remain here some time in the prosecution of his business, as Savanuali is his recognized Head '. ^rs. Mxjru- ’ :rs bus met man'- ) i ’ >.v. are pleased ‘.o see The Theatre.—Miss Price's benefit last night was an ovation of which that young lady has just right to be proud, the audience being one of the largest and most fash ionable of the season ; but what must have been even more gratifying to her was the unanimous and enthusiastic manifestations of favorable appreciation which greeted her in almost every scene, especially at the dose of the fourth act of ‘-Leah,” when 3be was forced to acknowledge the compliment by appearing before the-curtain. Miss Price’s first engagement on our boards ha9 been ex ceedingly successful. She has established her self as a most decided favorite with our pub lic. She bears with her in her professional wanderings the best wishes of numerous stranger friends and admirers, whoWill anti cipate her return amongst us with pleasure. At the close of the first piece last night, Mr. Hanchett made a very liaud- some address to the audience in her behalf. To-night we have “Richard III,” with Mr. and Mrs. Crisp in the leading characters. Schooner on Fire—The schooner Mes senger, Captain Holding, loaded with lime, arrived at this port ou yesterday. Pork.—In consequence of the extreme cold weather farmers have slaughtered a large number of hogs and dressed them for the marke*.
