L. Chartier, deceased, late of said county. T. P. PEASE, dll Executor. The Savainah Daily Herald Legal Notices. Amcrian Sacred Waste. Europe has noihurch-mosic, as weunder- stand the term ;«least she has no sacred music which has ievelopad itself into a sys tem, and called h its aid men like Mason and Hastings whobave devoted their lives to itB organization ad improvement. Sacred music in Europe uay be divided into two classes ; the Rom.n Catholic, which is so elaborate and diffitu.lt of execution as to re quire the aid of tr.ined choirs for its per formance, and a caJvated ear lor its appre hension ; and the sinpler Protestant church- music, much of whith is a bald, unmeaning chant, with very litle either of melody or ot rhythm in its composition. Between the two we may indeed fiat the music of the Lutheran service in many c' the German churches and that of the church of England ; but their music partakes so hr ot the nature of that of their common mother, the Catholic church, as to be too corn pax and difficult, for the understanding of these who are .deficient in a musical education. The school of saertd music in this country has avoided both o. - these extremes, and brought forth a style of music at the same time so simple as to le within the compre hension of a com lucratively uncultivated taste, and so melodic iu character as to in terest all who arc capable of correct musical feeling. The American church music con- tuns m«:v specimens of detached melodies w • ch w .. hear comparison with any Eu ropean music wnntcvcT. While it is cosmop olite in character, an,: has drawn largely on the works ot the D-nt European masters for its material, it has also educated a class of men whose productions, considered in view of their obvious intent, are little, if any, in ferior to those which they have borrowed from their transatlantic brethren. It would be unjust to claim for this tchon of music a lame amount of originality, Mauy of the best pieces of sacred music are adap tations from the European masters—often fragments of an opera, a symphony, or an oratorio—anything which, in the mind of the compiler, is calculated to produce elevated and devotional feeling. Others are obvious imitations of these imported productions; while still others, though following tbeestab- lished form, have yet a distinctive character ot their own. In the latter class we may in clude many ot the compositions of Lowell Mason, Thomas Hastings, and others; and to these gentlemen, together with such musi cians as I B. Woodbury, Wm. B. Bradbury and George F. Root, American sacred music ■ is largely indebted for its present orderly de velopments.— Oneida Community Circular. ; Here is an item for'those who have been following Wilkie Collin’s novel, “Armadale,” in the pages of “Cornbill” or “Harper.” There is a vessel lying at present at the Huskisson Dock (Liverpool) called the “Ar madale.” On Saturday a shipkeeper em ployed thereon was found lying dead. On Sunday another keeper, appointed .in his place, was removed to the hospital in a dy ing condition, and yesterday another man was found dead on board.—Round Table. —Judge Busteed, U. S.
