January 6th, 1866.
The attention of citizens and others is called to the
following extract of an Ordinance passed August 2,
1839:
EXTRACT.
Sec. Sd—If any person shall ride, lead, or drive
any horse, mule, or other animal usually ridden, or
used for draft In any sort of carriage whatsoever,
within or between the doable row of trees, in the
centre of South Broad street, or the double or triple
row of trees on the Bay (except through or across
the said trees when they are Intersected by the
streets) or who shall ride, lead or drive the same
over any of the sidewalks or footways within the
said city, he or she shall be punished as is herein
after mentioned. ,
Sec. 5. Upon the conviction of any violation oi
any of the provisions of this Ordinance the offender
mav ho flued In. a sum not exceeding one hundred
dollars, at the eiiscretion or the Major, Chairman or
Alderman presiding at the Bonce Conn, or of the

And tin* said flues and forfeitures may be ie\ien, re
covered. collected and enforced in tbe manner pre
scribed by law, and one-half thereof shall be paid,
when collected, to the informer and the remainder
shall be paid to the City Treasurer lor the use of the
City.
The Police will report all violations of the above.

The attention of captains of vessels is called to
the following extract from an ordinance passed in
Council Nov. 2>st, I860.
EXTBACT.
Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Alder-
men of the city of Savannah and the hamlets there-
ot in council asse mbled, and it is hereby ordained by
authority of the same , that it shall not he lawful
hereafter for any master, captain, or commander of
any steam or sailing vessel arriving in the harbor
of Savannah, to land, or permit to be landed, any
steerage passenger, or other person likely as a pauper
to become a charg. on said city, without permission
from tue Mayor or Acting Mayor of said city ; and
that for a violation of the foregoing (provision such
master, captain or commander shall be liable, on con
viction before the police court, to a fine of twenty-five
dollars lor every sncli steerage or pauper passenger
so landed as aforesaid; but such line may be remitted
on such muster, captain or commander cither con
veying such passenger or pauper back to the port
"Whence he came, or entering Into bond, to be ap
proved by the Mayor, that snch passenger or other
pauper shall not become a charge to or on said city
for the space of at least twelve months from such
landing; uud ou such master, captain or commander
paying all costs of prosecution, and all expenses at
tending the enforcement of the order of the Mayor in
carrying out this ordinance in every given case.
The police will report all violations of the above.

the 15th of last November, which requires all
persons liable to Taxation In the mouth of December,
1865, to make their returns, and payment of their
dnes previous to the loth of the present mouth,
January, otherwise execution will be issued aguuist

AN ORDINANCE
To amend an Ordinance entitled an Ordinance to
levy and assess taxes, and raise revenue for the
City or Savannah, and to amend the various f.x
aud revenue Ordinances of said City, passed In
Council 27 th December, 1865.
Sec. 1. Beit ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen
of the City of Savannah, in Council assembled, and
it is hereby ordained by the authority aforesaid,
That so much or said recited Ordinance of 27th De
cember, 1866, as requires returns to be made
quarterly be as to ret urns of all receipts for freight
and passage money, so amended us to require that
said returns for freight and passage money he made
monthly ; the first return to be made on tile first day
of February next, or within ten days thereafter, and
that so much of said recited Ordinance as militates
with this Ordinance, be and the same Is hereby re
pealed.

In relation to the employment of Privates In the City
Police.
Sec 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen
of the City of Savannah, in Conneil assembled, and it
is hereby ordained by the authority or the same. That
ir shall and may tie lawful lor his Honor, the Minor,
to make contracts and conditions with tlie privates
cf tlie City Police, to the effect that no such private,
already or hereafter to be appointed, shall resign dr
vacate his position as such private, without first
giving thirty days’ notice to tnc Mayor of said pri
vate's intention so to do. on pain of loss of all pm or
compensation due at the time of such resignation or
vacation ; and that, hereafter the Mayor he author
ized to make no new appointments of privates in
said Police, without requiring said stipulation, con
dition or contract to be made.
