Petroleum in Georgia and Alabama.—
'That portion of Georgia wbidr lie* west of
the Western and Atlantic Railroad in its
Northwestern section,and extends across the
boundary of Alabama, far into the interior
of the State, is not, in all probability, sur
passed in the extent and variety of its min
eral resources by any portion of the United
States, embracing the same extent of terri
tory. The Legislature of Georgia, both at
its late and tormer sessions, have been alive
to this fact, and have brought into existence
various chartered companies for the devel
opment of one or another of these mineral
products. We are glad to observe this evi
dence of the enterprising spirit of our peo
ple, and regard it as auguring well for the
revival of the pristine glory of the old com
monwealth.
During the war the petroleum interest has
sprung up in portions of the States of West
ern Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and other
States, which for its magnitude has astound
ed the country and the world. The meaning
of the word petroleum is rock oil. The
quantity of this useful article of commerce
exceeds all belief. Some wells yield as much
as a thousand barrels a day, others still high
er,and one has for some time afforded daily,
3,000 barrels of oil! The multifarious uses
to which this oil is applied forbid the suppo
sition that the markets of the world will ever
be glutted by its abundance.
Evidences of petroleum in the Northwest
section of this State, and in the portions of
Alabama referred to are so abundant lhat
they are attracting capital from all parts of
the country. The surface indications of this
wonderful oleaginous Quid are very striking
to the eye of the experienced “oil hunter”
throughout the entire area of this coal re-,
gion. The cliff of the geological strata
of Northern Alabama and Northwest Geor
gia—the formations of slate, sandstone
and shade—the discovery of oil in
many localities, floating od the surface of
stagnant pools and streams of water—all tend
to confirm the belief that these sections are
rich in this newly discovered source of im
mense wealth; and the fact that petroleum
has been recently found in Kentucky and
Tennessee in quantities that promise to sur
pass even the famous wells of Venango
county, Penn., is another strong indication
that this valuable material exists througljmt
the entire chain of the Cumberland moun
tains, from Pennsylvania to the Mississippi
river. In all sections of these States prepara
tions are making for testing the existence of
oil. Some of the most sagacious of our capi
talists are interested in these enterprises, and
should success attend in their operations, the
whole of our people will be benefited, and
prosperity scatter her blessings over the
land.—Macon Telegraph.

Important Rumor — We learn from a gen
tleman who has arrived in this city per Mo
bile and Ohio Railroad, says the Mobile Tri
bune, that there was a rumor on the train to
the effect that a telegram had passed through
the office at Okalona. Miss., stating that the
French bad taken Brownsville, Texas. The
Tribune's informant was unable to learn any
of the particulars, and just give the rumor as
he heard it. There is nothing improbable in
this, as the force which was stationed at
Brownsville was not sufficient to prevent its
capture if the French were determined upon
it. We shall probably have authentic news
from that section in a few days.
Secretary Seward on War.—A gentle
man of this city, says the Louisville Journal,
on Thursday of last week, put an interesting
question to Mr. Seward, Secretary of State.
Mr. Seward replied, “I must answer you
diplomatically”—and he did. “And now,”
said the gentleman, “I will ask you another
question, and you can answer as diplomati
cally as you please; Are we to have war ?”
“No .’’’replied the Secretary. Nothing di
plomatic about that. We know that this con
versation took place, for we heard it.

CONSTITUTION LIFE SYRUP
Has produced a revolution in Medicine.
What may seem almost incredible is, that maay dls
eases hitherto considered hopelessly incurable are be
quentty cured in a few days or weeks; and we cheer
lolly invite the investigations of the liberal minded and
scientific to curse which have no parallel at the prea-
sent day.
During the past five years we have contended with
obstacles and overcome opposition as herculean as
were ever encountered by any reformers.
RAPIDITY OF CURE.
Some say, “Your cures are too quick," while others
doubt their permanence, and Brink that diseases can
only be cured by the “slow, recuperative process of
Nature.”
This Is our reply: In health, the body, like a well-
balanced scale, la in a state of equilibrium. But when,
from any eaoae, down goes one side of the scale, we
have the effects of disease. What is requisite, U tore
store the normal balance of the scale.
