A Remarkable Phenomenon.—Yesterday morn
ing two well known citizens met near the Custom
House corner, one of whom, though a gentleman of
excellent taste Is proverbial for his habitual serious
ness—he has not been known to smile alond since
the news of Gen. Lee’s surrender. His friend was
astonished to find his unusually sombre face all
wreathed in smiles.
“Good morning,” said he, extending his hand in a
very cordial manner. “Good morning. What’s the
news?—ha, ha 1”
The other, who had jnst taken hla letters from the
office, replied, “Bad, bad, very bad. The Govern
ment refuses to recognize my claim for the cotton
seized, and I am a ruined man.”
“That’s bad, ba, ba. That’s bad, ha, ha, ha l’ 1
But never mind, ba. ha. It will be all the same
twenty years hence, ha, ba. Time will make all
things right.” Ha, ha !
“To add to my misfortunes I have a return of my
old disorder, neuralgia, which is more violent and
Insupportable than ever.”
“Weil, that Is bad, ha, ha, ha—very bad, ha, ha.
But, ha, lia. You kuow, we are all liable to be 9ick,
ha, ba, lia 1”
“You surprise me; I did not suppose my misfor
tunes would be to you a cause of mirth. The recital
ofmy troubles, eveu my severe affliction seems to
have excited your rlsibles In a most extraordinary
mauner.”
“No, no; ha, ha! Beg pardon. Ua, ba, ha I I
sincerely sympathize with you my friend. Ha, lia
“Sir, your conduct Is inexplicable. Your levity is
heartless."
“Pray, my good friend, excuse me. Ila, ha, ha! I
can’t help it. Ha, ha, ha l But allow me to explaiu.
The truth Is I went to hear A item as Ward’s lecture
on the Mormons lost night, aud that “gay and festive
cuss" threw me. iu common with his entire audience,
Into convulsions—convulsions of laughter—from
which I have not yet recovered. My rlsibles, as you
call them, were excited to such a degree—ha, lia—
that I have not been able to compose tile muscles of
my face into a natural, sober expression ever since.
Ha, ha, ha I Excuse me. Ha, ha. Butgoandheui
him to-night, and If he don’t cure your neuralgia
outright, he will make you forget It and all other
human Ills outside of Mormnudom for the time be-
iug. ”
The man with the neuralgia went straight and
took seats for himself and “one wife.”
His friend Is afraid to hear Artemus again, for fear
his convulsions might become chronic.
