SAVANNAH, FRIDAY FEBRUARY 2, 1866.
HcinwlJbU frn— J-*i,
A horse-stealer named Hiram Carpenter
recently escaped from the Orleans county
jail at Albion, New York, but was retaken.
He has given the following account of bis
escape underground:
. “1 should never have thought about try-
mg to get out, but I beard that' my woman
j-house.
willing to go there in handcuffs and shackles,
and a child might have taken me, for I
wouldn’t have offered to get away. • But
they kept putting me off, and I made up my
mind I would get out and see her or die in
trying. So I went at it.
“I raised up the pump box and found there
was a hole in the flagging large enough to
pass through. I laid down on my face on
the floor and backed into the bole feet first.
I found the well plastered near tbe top, so
hanging on with my hands I'let myself down
as far as I could and dropped. I had no idea
of the depth of tbe well, or where I should
bring up; I only knew that the well was
dry. I dropped straight with my face to the
west. I found bottom at about twenty feet,
landing in mud and water two feet deep.
After recovering from the shock of the fall I
took off my boots, tied them around my neck
with my handkerchief, and clambered up to
within about ten or twelve feet of tbe top.
The only tool I bad was a piece of iron about
six inches loDg and half or three-quarters of
an inch square.
With this I went to work, and after some
labor dislodged a stone from tbe wall. In a
very short time I was at work in the dirt. I
supposed the foundations of tbe jail weDt
down about eight feet, and I calculated to
begin down low enough to come up slanting
under them. I had nothing to eat or drink,
and bad nearly died for lack of air (the only
air that could reach him being the little that
passed down through the crevices of the
? ump box). I worked steadily all the time
was in there, and hard work it was too. I
worked lying on my face, with the iron in
my hand above me. scraping the dirt until
the weight on my head was all that I could
bear, when I backed down and pushed it
behind me into the stone filling around the
wall. When I got, near tbe surface I found
it hard digging. The ground had been Ailed
in, it was full of stones and frozen hard. The
hole at the surface was so small that I took
off my clothing to get through it.
I finally got out into the air at about ten
o'clock Wednesday night, having tunnelled
about twelve feet, and worked at it thirty-two
hours of the hardest work I ever did. I was
so weak and exhausted when I got out that
1 had to lie still for some time. At last I got
strength enough to climb up the wall aod
drop into the park. I was then so weak and
dizzy that I could not walk, so I crept across
the park on my hands and knees. On reach
ing the street 1 managed to walk, but you
would have thought I was drunk if you had
seen me; I staggered so that the sidewalk
wasn’t wide enough for me.' 1
The French Emperor's Destiny,
To the Editor of the N. Y. Express.
New York, Jan. 17, 1866.
Having read in your paper of the 16th an
article entitled “A New Key to the Emper

those ciphers 1869 (to which year some mys
terious anticipation it seems has been attached
in connection with Napoleon’s destiny) come
also in another way, perhaps more remarka
ble, because its simplicity forms a series of
notable events in the French history almost
in immediate succession one to the other.—

A Bust Gets its “Head Busted-"—A
“commercial traveller” who happened to
have a large amount of money in his posses
sion, just before retiring at a small country
hotel in the West, took the precaution to
look under tbe bed to see that no intruder
was concealed there. He was horrified to
see by tbe dim light of bis candle the pro
portions of a massive human headand shoul
ders half bidden among a pile of band-boxes
and other rubbish. The gentleman seized
his money abd his revolver and called upou
the robber to come forth. An ominous si
lence succeeded; it occuired to the traveller
that the villain was taking deliberate aim to
shoot him, and he instantly blazed away
with his pistol. Tbe report alarmed tbe
house; landlord and chambermaids rushed in;
the guest pointed out tbe place where the
robber was concealed, and an investigation
discovered the cause of tbe alarm in a bronze
bust of Daniel Webster, with a bullet hole
through the middle of the forehead.

During the past five yean we have contended with

RAPIDITY OF CURE.
Some say, “Your cures are too quick,” while other*
doubt their permanence, and think that diseases can
only be cured by the “slow, recuperative process ol
Nature.”
This is our reply: In health, the body, like a well-
balanced scale, is in a state of equilibrium. Bnt when,
from any cause, down goes one side of the scale, we
have the effects of disease. What is requisite, is to re
store the normal balance of the scale.
CONSTITUTION LIFE SYRUP
