The Theatre.
A more elegant and pleasing entertainment has not
been given for a long time in Savannah than the grand
Vocal and Instrumental Concert at the Theatre last
evening. The audience, though select and spprecla-
tive, was not so Urge aa it ought to have been, which
obviously somewhat dampened the spirits of the per
formers. Nevertheless, the orchestra under the lead
ership of Prof. Richter executed their portion of the
programme very acceptably, as did also Mr. Geo. Gray
who was in excellent voice, and Mr. Herman L
Schreiner, who presided at the pianoforte and also
played several brilliant solos. Dr. Johnson and Mr.
Ward sang two songs apiece in a manner that did
great credit to the "homo talent" employed on the oc
casion. The feature of the evening was the viollncello
®olo of Prof. Haas, whose instrumentation was that of
a genuine professor, and elicited enthusiastic tokens
of admiration and approval from the audience.—
The programme concluded with a new composition of
Prof. Richter’s, “The Capsize Polka,” a brilliant and
effective piece of music. Altogether the concert was
a highly enjoyable one, and we earnestly hope that the
talented performers who so generously volunteered
their services last evening, .will receive a Just recogni
tion on its repetition.
To-night the dramatic season recommences, and the
presentation of the silver Fireman's Trumpet will
take place. An excellent bill comprising "Still Waters
Ron Deep" and "The Dumb Belle,” is offered, and a
crowded house may be looked for.

Police matters.
Quite a Urge number of cases were before Mayor
Anderson yesterday. There were the usual number of
cases of drunkenness and disorderly conduct which
were disposed of by fine. A couple of sailors of the
revenue cutter Bibb, were arraigned for drunkenness,
and as they had been in the barracks, they were or
dered to be turned over to the officers of the ship with
a reprimand.
A lady was charged with keeping a disorderly house,
but upon examination it appeared the disorder con
sisted of nothing more than loud words in the house
at a Ute hour. Case dismissed.
A keeper of a restaurant on Bryan street was charged
with vioUting city ordinance in keeping open on Sun
day and selling coffee and cigars. The witnesess testi
fied to the fact of his being open and that they saw
him sell. One witness testified to buying cigars and
paying for them. The counsel for the gentleman did
not deny the fact of his being open on Sunday and
selling cigars and coffee; but he did not cell liquor on
Sunday. As it was a violation of the ordinance, how
ever, the Mayor ordered him to pay the costs.
Another man who keeps a grocery and liquor store
near the Charleston wharf was charged with selling
liquor and cigars to negroes and others on Sunday.—
The witnesses were the same as those in the former
case, and one of them (a German) testified to having
bought whiskey and cigars and to having paid for
them. Also that there were negroes doing the same
thing. The man denied selling liquor, but admitted
selling the cigars. He was fined ten dollars.
The owner of a dray was charged with allowing it to
haul railroad iron, placed crossways, through the
streets, contrary to ordinance. The iron is part of
that destroyed on the Central Railroad during the
maroh of Gen. Sherman and which is now being ship
ped north for the purpose of re-rolling. It has been
bent into all sorts of shape and it was testified that it
was impossible to load it on the drays in any other
manner. The Mayor after directing the owners to be
as careful as possible with the loading of the Iron, dis
missed the case.
A man was charged with abusing an officer in the
discharge of his duty and while trying the store doors
on his beat. It appears that the policeman was quite
boisterous in his "trying” operations and woke the
gentleman who was asleep in the store and coming out,
not knowing who it was and as there had been several
attempts to break into the store, he ordered him off
and said if he found him there again he would fire on
him. The case was dismissed, and the Mayor re-
marked he thought the case might have .been settled
without bringing the gentleman before the Court.
One or two persons were arraigned on the charge of
violating ordinance in relation to throwing goods out
of windows to the annoyance of vehicles and pedes
trians, and fined ten dollars each.
There were several cases of violation of city ordi
nance In relation to unloading coal and ashes from
aboard vessels in the river without having proper
screens or tarpaulins attached to catch the falling dirt.
After hearing the evidence it was found insufficient to
convict them and the cases were dismissed.
John Welsh was charged with stealing a coat on
Thursday last from Mr. Carson and was fined ten dol
lars, preferring to have the case settled in this Court
instead of going before the Criminal Court.
A man named Rooney was charge with beating his
wife on Thursday last. Mrs. Rooney testified that her
husband had beaten her and exhibited a cut on her
lace extending from her eye nearly to the extremity of
her nose and other injury. He was sent to jail and or
dered to be made to whitewash me enuro uutaiue oi
the Exchange building next week. Rooney is an in-
corrigible scamp, having been before the police court
■ least ten times within a very shoit time.
A gentleman keeping store on Broughton street wm
fined ten dollars for allowing some young men to prac
tice shooting in his store at a late hour in the evening
to the annoyance of the neighbors and in violation of
city ordinance.

Superior Court—Before Judge Fleming.
The case of Mayor and Aldermen of the city of Sa
vannah, etc., vs. the Central Railroad A Banking Co.,
Marine Bank, F. T. Willis et. aU. was resumed yes
terday.
The arguments of Messrs. Lovell and Law, attor
neys for the complainants, consumed the day.
Thos. E. Lloyd, Esq., of the counsel for the defen*
dints, closes the case to-day, the defence having of
fered no evidence.
To be Raffled for-—We were last evening shown
a very handsome saddle cloth, magnificently embroid
ered in silk, on black broadcloth, by a lady of Savan
nah, and presented to a young friend of ours (too mod
est to allow bis name to appear), and to be put up at
one hundred dollars for the benefit of one of our or
phan asylums. The prize Is worth contending for,
and the object Is most laudable. There will be fifty
chances st two dollars s chance, and it may be seen at
the cigar store of A- Fernandez, northwest comer of
Bull and Broughton afreets, where lt will be rallied for
and the chances may be taken.
Quick Trip.—The steamer Jas. A. Stevens, Captain
Quinn, arrived at her wharf yesterday, having made
the run from Augusta in the short space of eighteen
hours, including the time she laid over in the river
last night. We are indebted to Purser E. B. Conine
for the following river news: Met steamer Falcon at.
Cox’s Bar, R. H. May at Big Gun Beach; P. B. Good-
sell, Eugenie, Union, and a steamer name unknown,
at the lower mouth of King Creek Bun; steamers
Standish st Saucy Boy Reach, Eclipse at Blanket Point,
and Laura at Porter’s Landing, all bound up.
A Valuabl* CaBoo.—The British ship Mozart, Cap
tain Smith, which cleared from this port yesterday,
carries a very large and valuable cargo, consisting of
nineteen hundred bales upland cotton, one hundred
and thirty-five bales eea islands and 96,469 feet of tim
ber. The weight of the cotton is 920,688 pounds, and
the total value of the cotton and timber amount to the
large aggregate of $468,875 52.
Another Steamer from Baltimore.—Messrs. La-
Roche A West, agents for the Baltimore line of
steamers, yesterday received a despatch from the
agents in Baltimore, stating that the steamship Fan
nie had been engaged to take the place (for the pre
sent) of the steamship Richmond, which was recent
ly lost on Cape Hatteras, and would sail yesterday
for this city with a fall freight. As yet they have
not received any particulars of the loss of the Rich
mond. •
Teaching the Young Idea How to Shoot.—We
had the pleasure of witnessing last evening some
remarkable shooting at the pistol-gallery of Captain
Travis, by a son of the Captain’s sged nine yesrs.
The shooting of the Juvenile “idea” far surpassed
that of all his competitors, among whom were sev
eral of the best shots in the city, and exhibits well
the proflelency in tbe use of the pistol, which may be
acquired under the Instruction of that master of the
weapon, Captain John Travis. We can assure al;
those who have not yet visited him at his Gallery
over the “Our House,” that it is well worth while
to do so.
