The Savannah Dally SAVANNAH, FRIDAY 9, 1066. Ill Treatment of Veterans by Builneu Hen. There is » great deal of complaint from returned eoldiere concerning the coldness, and often the rude ness, with which they are treated by parties from whom they ask employment. We are in receipt of a long letter from an intelligent soldier,'who states that he was an ordnanoe sergeant in the Army of the Poto mac, and that he served a frill term of three years. He complains bitterly of the treatment that he now receives, and from similar letters that we hare re ceived from other soldiers, we have no doubt that his feelings are shared by a large number. He aaya that he is a cripple for lib aa the result of his service in the army, and he now finds, in trying to secure em ployment suited to his oondition, that hia "uniform seems to be looked upon as a mark of diagraos—some thing similar to the striped dress that marks the State Prison convict.” His success In seeking employment at the public offices is no better, nor is he treated with any more respect. All of these Institutions are "full,” and he ia usually met with a scornful stare, followed by a slamming of the door in ills face. He asks perti nently, "Could not the Government do something for the soldiers who have been maimed in its service, as well as for the negroes, who now seem to absorb all their attention ?" This picture certainly looks like evidence that "republics are ungrateful,” and yet we uro convinced that it is not much overdrawn. It is s fact—humiliating, but nevertheless true—that ex- rebels are more successful in obtaining mercantile positions in this city than discharged Union soldiers. The object of this preference for rebels is of course to influent# Southern trade, but it shows pretty clearly what a cheap thing is patriotism. Lccv Loho in Trouble.—The dancing gal of the Ethiopian Troupe lately playing at Ralston Hall, fell into the hands of the Philistines on Wednesday night Thinking to have some fun, the fellow who takes the character of 2a belle Africaine, came out upon the street, after the evening’s entertainment, but "gobbled up” by one of the police, and marched to the calaboose, hoopakirts, flounces, pantalettes and all, for violating ordinance against assuming female garb. His appearance in the jug wse hailed with unbounded applause—creating a greater sensation than before his audience at the Hall. An explanation and about $8 sot the matter right, and Mias Lucy Long departed, with a mental reservation that It would be very long before she would be again caught by one of tboae ■•taking” Macon police.—Macon Messenger. The Quartermaster General refuses to pay for prop srty used during the war for military purposes in the Southern States. The following decision has just been made in a case whore vouchers had been given, by or der of s commanding general for the use of a black smith shop and tools belonging to a loyal citizen of Winchester, Va. : ••Winchester was a hostile town, captured from an en tmy who did not surrender on terms, but ware driven out by force of arms: every thing in it was prize cf war; as at Atlanta and Charleston, buildings were oc cupied for shelter ol' troops, acd for sick sod wounded soldiers. It does not appear that the Military Depart ment should order payment of any rents nndsr such circumstances.' Wo understand that this decision will apply So all similar cases arising in ths Southern States, even whero the clsiments produce evidence of loyalty. A Regiment on a Rampage A regiment of white United States troops stationed at Camden, Arkansas, headed by a sergeant, a fow days since, proceeded with a band of music to General Mays’ headquarters, and asked him to pay them, feed them better or dischsge them. The General quieted them by promising to telegraph to headquarters at Little Lock and to give them speech in the evening.—Monroe Intelligencer. Anoter Deed or Blood.—An altercation occurred last evening, Just before seven o'clock, in the bar-room in the basement of the Lanier House, between a white man, said to he named Choves, and a well known bar ber boy, called Pete, ending in a tight, and the killing of the hoy. We could not learn positively the nature of the difficulty, and prefer to await developments.— The boy was shot through the heart, and lived but a lew moments after receiving the fatal wound. The perpetrator escaped, although promptly pursued and fired at. We trust he will speedily be brought to jus tice.—Macon Telegraph. Small Pox.—This loathsome disease aeemB to he raging in many localities, and since the negroes have been freed, and thus acquired the privilege of going about whore they please, it seems impossible to check the contagion. It has for some time existed in Thom- asvillo, though confined to a very fow cases; butlately, it has assumed a more alarming character, owing to the fact that negroes are allowed to walk about town or visit one another with the disease upon them.— ThomasoUle Enterprise.
