Judge O’Byme had a boy arraigned for making a statement prejudicial to the characier of the Court. It appears he stated to some persons that the Judge had offered to release a negro recently sentenced to serve a term of six months on the streets and lanes provided he received the sum of fifty dollars. The Judge had no idea of allowing 9uch an impeachment of his integtity going forth without refuting it. The boy will have a hearing to-morrow, and there is no doubt will be punished as he richly deserves. Depasture of Steamships fob the North.—To day, four eteamers leave this port for northern cities, all taking out valuable cargoes. The Cumbria, Captain French, which was to have sailed on Thursday, but was detained on account of the weather being such as to interfere with her delivering and receiving freight sails at three o’clock for Phila delphia. The San Jacinto, Captain Loveland, also leaves this afternoon at three o’clock for New York. The Flambeau, Captaiu Eaton, and the Chase, Cap tain Roath, will also leave to-day, making three stea mers for New York and one for Philadelphia. Trial of G. B. Lamar, Jr. A large amount of documentary evidence was intro duced yesterday. Among the papers read were the permits given Mr. Lamar, Jr., by Major G. A. Hast ings, provost marshal at Thomasville, to ship certain cotton from that place to Doctortown; Gen. Steeuman’s order instructing Gen. Brannan to turn over the Im porting&nd Exporting Co.’s cotton to Mr. Browne, Treasury Agent; the paper found in possession of defendant, drawn up by G. B. Lamar, containing a list of cotton to be shipped as private cotton; all of which have been published in full. Detective Bunnell was called and testified as to the conversation which took place at the interview between A. G. Browne, Jr., and Mr. Lamar, in which the latter refused to divulge the name of the officer from whom he had procured permits to move the cotton at Thomas ville. Upon cross-examination, Mr. Bunnell declared that he had read and heard the evidence given by A. G. Browne, Jr., and was still willing to swear that the latter accused Lamar of. stealing cotton, upon which point his testimony differed from that of Mr. Browne. Bunnel also stated that he arrested Lamar upon his own authority and at his own discretion, not having received any instructions to do so. The question was put to Detective Bunnell by the counsel for the defence, “Do you swear that Mr. Browne’s report of the conversation between himself and Mr. Lamar is incorrect ? ” bui was objected to and overruled by the Commission. Captain Wrn. C. Brooks, Col. Kimball, and the col ored boy Hunter, testified to the same effect as in the former trial. The deposition of Major G. A. Hastings, of the 12th Maine Begiment, was introduced by the defence. The dex>osition of Major Hastings, who while provost mar shal at Thomasville, granted permits to ship cotton to Mr. Lamar, Jr., declares in substance that he had no knowledge of any .conspiracy to steal cotton or to brib<? officers. As to his issuing permits to Mr. Lamar to move the cotton in question to Doctortown, he had done that upon representations that it was being rapid ly made away with by thieves where it was, and that he allowed it to be removed to Doctortown in order to preserve it until it could be decided to whom it be longed. Mr. Beard, the Government contractor, had pproved thia action. The evidence being all in, the defendant’s counsel asked until Monday to prepare the defence and the commission adjourned until Monday morning at ten o'clock. Police Matters. There were several cases of drunkenness before his honor Mayor Anderson, yesterday morning. One, a woman, named Caroline Wilson, was charged with drunkenness and resisting officers. They found hec in the street, and when they tried to arrest her she made a desperate resistance, and actually bit off the stars from two of them. When taken into the barracks she was very violent, biting and kicking and requiring several officers to manage her. In the Mayor’s Court while the officer was preferring the charge, she was very abusive, threatened him with corporial punish ment at her first opportunity, and totally disregarded the commands of the Mayor to be silent. She was sentenced to pay a fine of twenty dollars aud sent to jail for contempt of court. Caroline appears to be an incorrigible virago, this being her second appearance before his honor within a few weeks. Two other cases were examined and the defendants fined respectively two and three dollars. A man was charged with fighting in the streets and was fined two dollars. A friend of the former was arraigned on the charge of interfering with the officer and attempting a rescue, but the accusing officer failed to make a case, it ap pearing the only interference was attempting to prove to the officer that the man he had arrested was not the- right one. The Mayor asked why the case was not investigated at the barracks before it was placed on the docket, and failing to receive a satisfactory answer, dismissed the case and ordered the Chief to have the conduct of the Sergeant making the entry investigated for returning the case to court without satisfactory evidence. A man was charged with rolling a barrel of liquor from the steamer Fannie and carting it off without first making arrangements with the owner. The case was turned over to a magistrate. mlttec ct three Aldermen and two citizens be appoint ed by his honor the Mayor, to tako into considera tion the propriety of establishing s new Qaa Com pany. [Office of the Savannah Daily Herald.] Savannah, February 9th, 1866. The markets during the past week have been almost as dull as the weather, which has been very disagree able, and but little business has been done. John R. Johnson, Chairman. The Committee on Health aud Cemetery to whom was referred the communication of Gee. M. Heidt, City Dispensary, beg leave to report that having had a conference with Mr. Heidt, he has agreed to furnish the Dispensary with all medicines necessary for the poor at New York wholesale prices, he will faithtully attend to the calls of the poor night and day, and that he will in all cases, give the poor his first attention in preference to pay customers, he will keep the city medicines distinct from his own. He having clerks to attend to his business will enable him often to employ them to assivt him, which will benefit the poor in caus ing less delay to them. He has made large outlays of money to improve the building, and to remove him now would ruin him. Your committee would, under these circumstances, recommend that he be allowed to remain in his pres ent position so long as he performs his duties faith fully, and give the ealary he now gets with the use of his improvements.
