On Sunday morning, about five o’clock, Policemen Charson and Gleason reported at the barracks ihat they had seen three negro men under the bluff and halted them when they ran and made their escape. When the officers reached the spot* they found three cases of tea, two tubs of butter, two or three hams, ten boxes of cigars and some canned fhiit, with other articles which the negroes had dropped in their re treat The officers took charge of these articles and conveyed them to the barracks. Upon examination they found that the store of Mr. Arledge, on the Bay, a few doors east of Abercom atreet, had been broken open, and that the goods recovered were the property of that gentleman. It appears that the thieves broke off the lock from the front door of the store and then opened the second door, when the large lot of goods it contains was ex posed to their thievish designs. There must either have been more than three men engaged in the rob bery; or they made more than one trip, as Mr. Ar ledge finds several more hams and other things gone besides those found. A tin money box, containing one hundred and eleven dollars in money is also missing. Saturday night was a very propitious night for such an undertaking, being an exceedingly dark one, and the gas lamps not being lit. Cannot something be done to put a stop to the many robberies we are called upon to chronicle every day ? The question arises—where do the thieves dispose of their plunder, and to whom ? They must have some receptacle for them. Let there be a watch kept upon every person even suspected of buying these stolen goods, and when they are detected, let them be visited with the severest penalty of the law. We hear almost every day of some one being detected in stealing cot ton, but we seldom hear of any one being arrested for buying stolen cotton. There certainly must be some buyers, and the sooner they are detected and broken up the sooner there will be fewer depredations of this kind. Police matters. O11 Saturday morning P. Loughlin and Isaac Jacobs alias M. Honey, were before liis honor Mayor Ander son, charged with disorderly conduct and fighting in the streets, near Yamacraw, on Friday night. They were each fined $5. Edward Brannan was charged with having been tound with a barrel of whiskey in his possession at a late hour on Friday night. The policemen testified they found two men carrying a barrel, and asked them what it contained. They said it was water. The po licemen not being satisfied of its mild character, fol lowed them to where it was deposited, and insisted upon trying for themselves whether it was so or not, when some person acknowledged that it was whiskey, and stated that it was the property of Mrs. Higgins. The policemen then arrested one of the parties, but the other made his escape. At the hearing Judge Chisholm appeared for the Freedman’s Court, and asked that this man be sent to court, as he was wanted for a witness before that Court at twelve o’clock. The Mayor accordingly turned the prisoner over to the Judge. A woman was brought before the Court for having, on Thursday last, caused her husband to be arrested and placed npon the docket, without making her ap pearance on Friday morning to substantiate the charge, in consequence of which the case had to be dismissed. She said she was unable to appear at the time, but that the charge was true and she was afraid ot her life. The Mayor said she ought to have sent word to the Court to that effect; that he could not have citizens arraigned and then allow witnesses to absent themselves from the hearing, noj only annoying the persons so charged but also occupying the time of the Court wantonly. He accordingly put the costs of the Court u pon her. Accident to tike Steamer Amazon. The steamer Amazon, which left Augusta on Friday morning, met with an accident when about six miles below that place. From a despatch received in this city on Saturday we learn that at two o'clock she struck a snag in the river, and the captain sending a man into the hold found that she was leaking very bsdly. He then ran her on the bank up to her guards, where she will remain until her cargo is taken off. She had 914 bales of cotton and 55 boxes of tobac co on board. We learn that not a pound of the cotton was wet, and the expectation is that unless the river rises all her cargo will be saved. We understand that the Wm. G. Gibbons has gone up to take her cotton off and bring it to this city. This will be a serious inconvenience to some of our merchants who intended sending their freight by the Amazon. The Circus. Dan C’astello and wife, with the balance of his com pany, arrived at the Pulaski House last evening. A t eleven o'clock this morning they will mske a forma 1 entree into the city, accompanied with all the para phernalia of their Great Show, which is one of the finest at present in the country. To-day their tent will be pitched in the enclosed lot at the corner of Con gress and Montgomery streets, and as their arrange ments have all been perfected, the performances will commence to-night and be continued the balance of the week. From appearances the show will not only be remunerative to the proprietors, but a source of gratification and pleasure to our citizens, and. in the absence of other amusement of any kind, will be glad ly welcomed. The police arrangements will be ample to preserve order. Daring Rubbery. — On Saturday last at about twelve o'clock three white men were together on South Broad street, and while passing the store of Mr. Geo. S. Nichols, near Barnard street, one of them seized a ham which was hanging in front of the door and de liberately walked off with it. Some person on the op - posite side oi the street sow the transaction, but sup posed the party had bought and paid for it. Mr. Nichols soon found his loss and on making search for the men tracked them to Whitaker street, but they had effected their escape with the plunder.
