The Cntccs.—About three thousand people were
gathered inside the mammoth parilllon of Dan Castel-
lo’s Cirous last evening. The performances of the
talented artiste who compose the company met with
wamrTipproval, and the feats .of Herr Ltngel in. the
lions’ cage aroused the Interest of the spectators to a
pitch of keen excitement. The riding and tumbling
was better than is commonly seen in traveling shows
of this kind, and what with the lions, the perfoming
horses and other extra attractions, the “horse-opera
cannot tail to draw crowds to every performance du
ring its stay in Savannah.

Abbivai. of ibe Steamship Vibgo.—The steamship
Virgo, Captain Buckley, arrived at her wharf yesterday
morning from New York. She brought full freight
and a good number of passengerB. We are indebted
to Purser Slocum for full files of New York papers and
the following Intelligence: On the 11th, 26 miles north
east of Charleston U. S. Light Houss, passed schooner
Pharos, Howland, bound south.
The Lamar Tblal.—The Military Commission en.
gaged upon the trial of G. B. Lamar, Jr., yeaterday
heard the plea of the acouBed, presented by his conn,

Advocate for the Government will be made on Wednes

thorities at New Orleane.
New Orleans, Feb. 6.—Somewhat of s fried exists
In New Orleans between the civil and military autbori-
tiea, and it ia understood that the matter has been re
ferred to Washington. It is all about the conduct of the
Mayor of the city. Public opinion sides with Gen.
Canby, whose conduct meets with general approval.

sources.
New York, Feb. 8.—The correspondent of the Lon
don Times gives a minute account of the circum
stances under which the Emperor Napoleon dis
patched M. Salleard on a special mission to Mexico.
He was hurried to the palace when the Emperor said
he wanted him to set out without delay for Mexico,
with a message from him to Maximilian. That he
considered that he (Napoleon) had fulfilled all the obli
gations imposed on him, and the time bad now ar
rived when Maximilian "must depend upon hia own
resources without the help of the French army."
M. Salleard asked for some credentials, but the Em
peror observed that there was no necessity for any
documents. All he had to do was simply to represent
to Maximilian the conversation he had Just had, and
that would suffice. He told M. Salleard, morover, to
lose no time in setting out for Mexico, but to depart
by the first steamer.
Your Ball and my Ox.
Mr. John O’Mahony, Head Centre of the American
branch of the Iriah Republic—(we mean one of the
Head Centers, for we shall keep out of the Fenian fight
if we can)—has issued a manifesto, declaring that Bri
tish Government spies (detectives) are dogging the
footsteps of the Fenians ofJjjar city. He says:
“It is a fact as startling as it is disgraceful, that
•pies, acting under the direction of a foreign Govern
ment, prowl about our streets, and, even under the
statute of Washington, hatch conspiracy against citi
zens of the republic, &c., Ac.
"This, of course, is the way the matter looks in the
•eyes of the Head Centre; but not exactly so in ours.
We trust our Government will maintain the strictest
neutrality in the war now opening between the Fe
nians and the British, and that whatever privUeges
are accorded to one belligerent will be extended also
to the other. And, as the Head Centre and his breth
ren are allowed to "hatch conspiracy” here, why not
their enemies ? We cannot imagine. In fact, the H.
C’s indignation reminds us of an anecdote told in
Congres is by a Western Member, of a fellow who was
gambling on a Mississippi steamboat, and had slipped
three aces into his boot to await the time of need.—
The time came; when, drawing on his reserve, lie
found that other and insignificant cards had been
rougishly substituted for his winning ones. “I won’t
play any more, ” he exclaimed in fierce indignation,
there’s cheating around this board, by George !"
Operations of the Fbeedmen’s Bureau.—The bu
reau is in charge of dOO.OUO acres of land, and 1,500
pieces of town property. It has issued mure than
600,000 rations to refugees, and 3.500,000 to freedmeu.
It has treated 2,600 refugees in hospitals and decently
buried 227 of them. It has treated 45,00J freedmeu
and made the graves for 6,000 of the number. Trans
portation has been furnished to 1,700 refugees and
1,900 freedmen. In the schools there are 80,000 people
that have been instructed by this bureau.

General Bankrupt Law.—Mr. Jeucks of Rhode
Island, who has been laboring long, both in and out of
committee, upon a general bankrupt act, haa given
notice in the House that he should demand action
upon it as the special order due to-morrow. The bill
is understood to be a very accommodating one, since
it provides a way for any embarrassed man to wipe
ont all his debts, and Mr. Jencks expects it to pass.
Several gentlemen, and among them Mr. Coukling of
New York, who has also spent considerable Congres
sional tim6 during two or three terms in the careful
Investigation of the subject, propose to amend the act
materially if the House will permit It.
How Brave Men Fraternize.—Major General
James D. Fessenden, son of Senator Fessenden, who
has just been mustered out of service, has accepted
the position of Superintendent of the New England
division of the National Express Company, of which
General Joseph E- Johnson, formerly of the Confeder
ate army, is President. General Fessenden's head-
S uarters will be at Boston, in which city he now is for
le purpose of putting the machinery of the company
n operation.
—The withdrawal of the French troops from Mexico
is claimed as a triumph of Secretary Seward's states
manship.
—The report of the visit of President Roberts and
General Sweeney to Canada, which created so much
consternation among the ’’ Kanucks," and led to the
calling out of the militia, turns out to have been a
cruel hoax. The suspected parties were only a couple
of quiet oil speculators on a boring tour.
—A spirit merchant in Klllamey, Ireland, has an
nounced that he has still on sale a small quantity of
whiskey which was drank by the Prince of Wales when
last at Klllamey.
—There were 458 deaths in New York last week—96
men, 98 women, 117 boys and 147 girls—a decrease of
36 from the previous week, and of 15 compared to the
corresponding week of last year.
