REMARKS.

Savannah, February 16th, 1866.
The markets during the past week have been ex
tremely dull, and but few transactions are to be no
ticed, with very little change in quotations.
The money market is still tight and negotiations
difficult. For Sterling Bills, with bills of lading at
tached, 42 premium is the best offering price. Sight
Exchange on New York, bank rate. 1 per cent, dis
count: out of doors, in small sums to suit purchasers,
better.
Cotton.—-The market has been greatly depressed
Bince onr lest weekly report, owing to unfavorable ad
vices from New York and Liverpool, and prices have
fallen with a probability of still further decline. The
quotations at the close of the present week are as fol
lows:

Sea Island.—There is very little demand, and that
only for the better grades at prices from 5 to 8c lower
than the quotations of last week.
The receipts since February 9th have been 6,102
bales of Upland and 425 Sea Island. The exports dur
ing the same period have been 5,037 hales Upland and
360 Sea Island, leaving on hand and on shipboard, not
cleared, a stock of 10,711 bales Upland, and 1,463
bales Sea Island.

Apples are scarce and in fair demand. We quote
sales at $11 per bbl.
Bacon.—There is a limited demand for this article
snl the stock is ample. We quote ribbed sides at 21@
21c.; clear do. at 21(3)23, shoulders st 16@18, hams
canvassed) 24@35, sugar cured 22@23.
B.'.ooino—There has been very little doing, and the
prices remain at about our last week's quotations.
Gunny bagging at 32(a)33c, and Sea Island at 32033.
Beeswax—The market has been dull and the re
ceipts very light. We hear of small sales at 40c lb
Butter—There has been a little better feeling in the
market during the past week, and prices remained
firm. We quote prime Goshen, in tubs, st 45@48c; in
firkins at 35040c.
Biscuit—The market was well suppled, and the de
maud moderate during the week. Prices remain about
the same as at the close of last week. We quote Soda
Biscuit at 12c; Sugar at 15c; Butter„12c; Lemon in
boxes 20c ; in bbls. 18c ; Boston 13c.
' Cidek—There is a good supply on hand, and there
is lm change to notice in prices. Wo quote Cham
pagne Cider at $17 ^ bbl; Thompson's preserved,
(1(1 gal), at $20 ta bbl.
Coffee—Tliere is a good supply in the market, but
prices remain firm. Sales have been dull during the
week at 3o@32c for St. Domingo ; 28031c for Bio, and
42@45c for Java.
Cohn—Several cargoes have arrived during the
week. It meets with a ready sale though prices yield.
We quote at $1 25 bushel in bulk from wharf; from
store at il 50@$1 50.
Candles—Continue in fair demand for the interior
trade, and prices remain firm. We quote Adamantine
at 28030c ; and Hull's at 25027c ^1 lb. _
Chee«e—Has an upward tendency. The demand is
very good and supply somewhat limited. We quote
Goshen 22023c ; extra Cream 23@25 ; English Dairy
25(«)30c Pineapple 32c.
Flock—The market has been very dull during the
past week, but prioeB have remained firm at last
week's quotations. Wo quote good Ohio at $10 ; good
Family at il2@$14 ; and ordinary at $8 75@$10,
Fecit—The market has been dull during the past
week and but few arrivals. Orangtsare selling at $7
box: lemons at $7 ft box; pineapples $2.
Gunpowder—The stock on hand continues large,
with but very small demand. Prices, nowever, re
main about the same as last week. Hazard’s Mills
Kentucky R. P. Powder at $10 50; Fairlawn brand,
in cases, 65c 'p, lb.
Hay—borne five cargoes arrived during the week
and the demand from the interior has been very good,
prices have advanced a trifle, and we quote from wharf
at $1 30 to *2 V 100 lbs.
Hides—The inquiry is good, but the supply exceed
ingly limited and prices have advanced a trifle. We
quote dry salted at 12c; deer skins at 15@20c.
Iron and Steel.—A supply adequate for the present
demand is offered. We quote sheet iron at
3*- 2 c %*. lb: flat, round, square and ordinary sizes of
iron, D.Lr.; horse shoe iron, 7c; Swedes, 9@10c; plow
steel, 12> a c; cast steel, 30c jJ lb.
Lard—The market it iB very heavily stocked, and
the demand light. Prices remain firm, and we qnote
Leaf at 21@25c; Pressed, 19(1,210.
Lime.—We note a cargo has reached our port during
the week Prices remain unchanged and demand very-
limited. We quote from stores $3 00@$3 50 as to
quantity and large lots could be bought cheaper.
Lumber.—We are still without important transac
tions m lumber, and consequently no reliable quota
tions can be given. The early opening of the Gull'
railroad now anticipated, will no doubt pat some ac
tivity iu the market, and we hope to report conside,
able sales in less than a month.
Timber.—The arrivals of the week have presented
but few desirable lots, the average size being quite
small and unsuitable for the shipping demand which
continues without abatement and is only partially sup-
’ plied. Prices have fluctuated some two or three dol
lars since cur last, but to-day are at about our last fig
ures, say rafts of 750 to 890 feet average $25 to $27,
aud other sizes in proportion.
Laths.—The market is dull, but well supplied and
the demand is moderate. Wo have no elunge to
notice. We quote at $7 por M.
Mackerel—The market is abundantly supplied,
but exceedingly dull. Prices remain the same as last
week. We quote No 3 Boston family at $7 50; N
in half bbls, $10; No 2 do, $9; No 1, in kits, $3; No
2 do, $2 73; codfish, in drums, 8010c fl lb.
Molasses—The supply on hand is good and the
demand limited, and prices of some grades are some
what lower. We quote Porto Rieo at 65070c; Muscova-
d , new cop, at 50@60c; now clayed Cuba, 45; New
York refined syrup, 75@80c per gallon; Golden syrup.
65390c; Florida syrup, $105 per gallon.
Oats—There have been several arrivals during the
week and the demand iB limited. Prices have declined.
We quote sales at 75@80c for store; black seed oats at
$1 08.
On. Cake—We hear of sales in small lota at $6 ft 100
ft,. The stock 1b light and prices firm.
Onions—There is a large supply on Bale and the
transactions are limited. From stores sales are re
ported at $3@3 25 V bbl.
Oils—The stock is ample and demand fair. We
quote Linseed at $1 60@180 f gallon.; whale at $1 950
2: sperm at $3(3)310; ueatttoot at $2 36; lard at
$2 40(3.2 60; kerosene at $1@106; train at $1 75; spirits
of turpentine at $1 40.
Fork—The market is very abundantly supplied, and
the demand continue* very moderate. We quote at
$20 bbl for mesa.
Potatoes—The market is well supplied and the de
mand from the interior is good. Prices have de
clined. Dating Potatoes are in request at $4@4 '25
bbl, and considerable stock of inferior remains on
the market Planting potatoes are selling at $4@4 50.
Raisins—At present the demand is very good. We
quote new crop in whole boxes at $6@6 50; half do,
$3; quarters, $1 60.
it ice.—The receipts of rough rice have been very
light during the week, but the demand was good, es
pecially for shipment to the interior. The market re
mains firm at last week’s quotations, 12 a He $ lb.
.Salt.—The market is dull and there have been no
arrivals during the week. Prices remain about the
same as at last week’s quotations. We hear of small
sales at a lower figure, from $1 40 to $1 50.
Shingles—The demand continues good. We hear
of no arrivals during the week. We quote Georgia
cypress at >6(2" 'll M.
Shot—The market Is well supplied and the demand
coutinues very moderate. We quote drop shot at $4
V- sack; buck, $4 25.
Boat—Our market is well supplied with all descrip
tions and brands. The demand from the home trade
continues very good. We quote Colgate’s and Hull's
family brands at 15c ^ lb; Moody A Barrett’s Savan
nah steam made at 14@15Jfc $ lb. >>aj .
Teas—The stock ottering at present is sufficiently
adequate, and the demand somewhat small. Wo quote
Kngllsh breakfast, at $1 25@1 50 ; Ooloug at $1(3,1 30;
Hyson at $1 40 <5,160; and Imperial at $1 40 (3) 1 GO.
Vinegar—'There is a full supply in the market—and
the demand is extremely light, and limited to the
We quote Cider Vinegar 30c ; White
home trade.
Wine at 38c.
Wool.—The demand is good, but the market con
tinues scarce of supplies. We quote at 32c per lb -
washed wool, in lots, 36 @ 38c.
Whiskey—During the past week the market has
been very dull, and prices remain unchanged.
